Re: Photos of Grayton Beach from Aug 09 2005
the beach looks beautiful! but, what's up with the water at Grayton? Is it brown? it's not red tide is it? I noticed that blue mtn water was clear.
great pictures SJ.
we're coming down in ten days...hopefully the crowds will be gone.
we are so excited...and i promise not to walk on the dunes, or what's left of them

Re: Photos of Grayton Beach from Aug 09 2005
The brown water, as Kurt mentioned, is from Western Lake. The Lake is still open, but the outflow has narrowed to about 4 feet in width. The Lake is brown/black due to the tannins coming from decaying plant matter that are in the Lake. It is like making a strong and large batch of sun-brewed tea. Same process, but in Mother Nature's tea pot. As of yesterday, the brown water goes west from Grayton almost to CR 83 at Blue Mtn Beach. It is staying fairly close to shore and green water can be seen around the sand bar. When the Lake closes off, the Gulf at Grayton Beach will return to the emerald green color most people like so much.

SJ - Thanks for the new pics.
We are heading down on Saturday for our week in SoWal (man it's been a long year). We always stay right next to Eastern Lake and love being close to the lake and the outflow. Every year we give the same explanation about the color of the lake water to new visitors we meet. Nature doing it's thing.
The kids love the outflow and spend most of their time there.
Thanks also for the posts on the dunes and other beach issues. We always try and respect the beach and the posts are a great help. Last year we planted our tent and left it up at night. We had no idea this was a bad thing. Thanks to the info on the board we have learned what the issues are with this. This year we will be taking it down at the end of the day.
We love SoWal and appreciate the efforts of the people who live there in educating those of us who come to visit.

Barbie...YOU ROCK!!!! I too confessed my sin about having family photos taken on the DUNES in 1992 by a professional. Confession is good for the soul...Education is good for the beach!

Re: Photos of Grayton Beach from Aug 09 2005
ah. the lake outflow. that makes sense - we're used to seeing that...i'm just glad it's not red tide *whew*
usually the lake flows out and goes west in front of gulf trace.
usually we sit in front of t-time, and even if the lake is flowing out, it doesn't flow in front of t-time...
either way, we are so looking forward to our vacation.
how are the crowds?

Re: Photos of Grayton Beach from Aug 09 2005
woohoo! i am so taking advantage of the fact that i have a 4 year old and so he's not school age(yet). We always go in May before schools out, or in this case, in August, after school starts. we'll do it that way as long as we can. We usually feel like we have grayton to ourselves - and don't get me wrong, i know i'm a tourist, but without the crowds, it makes us sort of feel like "locals".

Re: Photos of Grayton Beach from Aug 09 2005
The lake was still flowing our this morning, but at a much slower pace than in previous days. It also took on a more easterly direction so that the water between Grayton & Gulf Trace was getting back to it's clear, emerald green color.
It apparently broke open Saturday afternoon, after a week of rain. Sunday was beautiful and there were lots of folks enjoying the beach. Many folks were catching crabs with nets in the outflow of the lake to the gulf. It was lots of fun watching the reactions of the toddlers' mothers, who were clearly thinking - my baby is swimming with those things with claws - yikes!Last edited by sunshine; 08-10-2005 at 10:45 AM. Up here in Ohio we don't start school until the end of Aug or after Labor Day. Looking forward to less crowded beaches too!

Ours starts on Aug 23rd. Been combing the school calendar for a long weekend to maybe jam in an impromptu killer butterfly visit (we have killer hummingbirds up here, at least for a couple more months).

Re: Photos of Grayton Beach from Aug 09 2005
The fecal count can get quite high in some of the pools down there!!! We've had pools be closed because of this and it just grosses us out everytime!!! They even have rules now about babies/toddlers wearing special "NO LEAK" diapers in the pool. Sorry to share this...anyone want to go for a quick dip?

Re: Photos of Grayton Beach from Aug 09 2005
I don't understand how "no leak" diapers aren't going to leak in a pool.

Re: Photos of Grayton Beach from Aug 09 2005
We have near a dozen that feed from a kitchen window gadget wife put up earlier this year. Correction - had - couple of weeks ago one of the more scruffy males appointed himself King Of The Feeder and has been chasing the others away (a few still get through his security patrol). This week he graduated to chasing other species, including my wife when she went out to fill the feeder! Wife named him Cujo. We're buying more feeders.

It's probably too late for this year but I'm going to try one of the window feeders next year.

Maybe the fecals leak out, butt the "color" stays behind.

Re: Photos of Grayton Beach from Aug 09 2005
We have a winner!!!! You are right...we wouldn't want any SOLID evidence left BEHIND! BTW...let's give those babies a little break...bigger folks can forget where the bathroom's are located! Here's a ?...why are there baby pools and the babies in the "no leak" diapers are in the main pools?
