I don't think she wants to be in my class this summer -- it's a core class that the students don't want to take. It even bores me. I never teach in the summer, but the person who was teaching this class got promoted to dean and asked me to fill in for him. Can't exactly say no to the dean.

Can you imagine a room full of sowallers with computers?

I remember those, you desperately try to stay awake in case something you didn't already know comes up. Then it only does when you can't take it anymore and do a face plant at your desk.

I hear ya. What sucks is that our salary is based on evaluations from students, some of whom are forced to take our classes because they are core classes. No matter how much seniority we have as a professor, at our institution everyone has to teach core classes. So we are subject to bad evaluations from kids who are forced to take our classes.
How can we possibly get good evaluations from students who despise having to take a core class?
It's totally different when I'm teaching classes to someone who has chosen computer science as a major.
-
No offense, but that is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. How about leaving out the core classes and only counting the ones that aren't forced?
-
I had some great professors in many "required" classes. Since "core" classes are the basis of a student's education one would hope both the students and the professor would have more regard for them. One of my favorite college classes was a required freshman class taught by a highly regarded senior professor of international renown.
There are professors who can make the drying of paint interesting and there are professors who could bore you while standing in the center ring of a circus w/ a trapeze act overhead.
The evaluation results should be the same regardless of the subject matter as the teaching skills shouldn't have changed.
-
I'm a math/science type but one of my favorite professors was for Composition I and II. I love to read and even enjoy writing some, but detest those types of classes. Timed writing, analyzing poems and plays, all that ambiguity...UGH! He made it entertaining and bearable.
I am not crazy about any of the social sciences, but was lucky enough to have really enthusiastic and knowledgeable professors for all of my core classes - it makes a difference. I can't think of a class that can't be "okay" if taught by a great professor."It was far easier for you as civilized men to behave like barbarians than it was for them as barbarians to behave like civilized men." - Spock (Star Trek)

Actually I'm in luck because I can relate to college students, having one in the family. My sections of core classes fill up.
Basically, my attitude is that I want to treat students the way I want my daughter to be treated. Pay it forward. So I have "love in my club."

DD, that's because you live in Texas where it's flat.
I'm thinking about riding my bike to work. But there's a very steep hill that's about a half-mile long -- much worse than Cardiac Hill in the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta, if you've ever heard of that. With a laptop and books I know I'll have to walk my bike up that hill.

I'm SERIOUSLY considering it.
I have to set up a google site and a PB wiki site. (Not sure why, to be honest.) Both of them involve setting up links to other stuff. One would think that I could do that--the icons LOOK just like the ones here. But they don't work that way. They do crazy stuff that makes no sense. Both of my stupid sites are a mess, and I no longer care.
Kurt is a god, obviously.
I feel like I'm trapped in a barrel of superballs when I'm in that class--we jump from one thing to another like crazy people. During our supper break last night, the teacher started talking about how the school required way too many things for an 8-week class. She started cutting assignments like mad. But, sheesh...I hate that class. She has already sent me almost a dozen emails today about this week's homework. I'm pulling my hair out...Life doesn't get any better than this.

So they are teaching you using the google templates? They aren't using frontpage or an actual website building software?
You might want to try frontpage and then upload to google, microsoft word can build webpages too.

At the rate I'm going, I'll barely have enough brain cells left to get me a job cleaning up after the elephants.
I'm watching Raiders of the Lost Ark. The big dude just got hit by the plane propellers. Gets me misty every time.Life doesn't get any better than this.

And do you think I will get extra credit for 1) my ranting about how much I hate the class 2) and the fact that I was ranting during class?

I'm not laughing with you, I'm laughing at you...
(And I'm not telling you about all the embarrassing stuff I watch when nobody's looking.)
