Nobody warned me when I took a job here about housing costs! Woooo.
Still would have come anyway. It's worth it.
Oh, and, there's lots of cute Air Force guys around. hehehe.
Yea, they are cute, until they retire. A few years ago, the divorce rate with the military was about 75%. Not a good track record.

I could always use the extra $ in my pocket.
If you can (might be an issue w/ bed tax) I would suggest that you start by renting a place month to month or for several months at a time, then committ to a longer lease after you have been in the area for a while. That will give you the freedom to change your location based on the areas you like/traffic/work location.

I know the area very well. I been there at least once a year for the last 25 years. I have seen it grow.

ALSO- My dad lives there in Burnt Pine in Sandestin and has 2 condos he rents out at Majestic Sun. If all hell breaks loose I can always crash in one of their extra spaces... which won't happen- because I plan for everything!

Who wants to oogle men? I have way better things to do- it was a point of finding decent converation- NOT to oogle.

Florida Girl you seem bitter about something (men?)- come out with us next week- we'll buy you a drink and you can loosen up!

I'm not bitter, just a realist. No, I don't drink. I really don't get into watching people suffer needlessly, knowing that you could do something, or say something that might prevent it. Been there, done that, got a certificate.

You never awnsered my question. Age of bitterness -I mean- reality sets in exactly when?

Age of bitterness sets in whenever an individual experiences a traumatic situation, and chooses to be bitter about it, instead of dealing with it in a manner that brings resolution. To say that because an individual is bitter just because they have experienced the situation, and are aware of the reality of life, is not fair. In that frame, most of the population would be bitter, because trauma is a natural part of life to some extent. To say that trauma does not exist, is sticking one's head in the sand.

No offense FG- but in your own words- seems like you need resolution.

I have watched many failed marriages in my time- but I remain hopeful.

But seriously- we all know we don't need men. I'm not some self-loathing man-hating woman because I have had a few that have treated me like crap. You live, learn, and grow. No kidding.

Of course trauma exists- but for you to bring that into a "where should I hang-out" forum is just silly. Think about it. You've obviously been so hurt you're trying to taint other womens opinions so they don't even leave the house. Because all men are horrible right? Get over it- or you'll be miserable forever.

and again- what age does bitterness start?

Still never gave me an age range which makes me think you're way older, divorced and yes, still VERY bitter. Lighten up!

    Re: Life suggestions?

I think Florida girl's overall message is a great one (and sounds like the voice of experience) it just got repetitive and a little bitter.

I've gotten frustrated more than once w/ girls who think one's life is empty and meaningless if you are single and whose lives revolve around a boyfriend/husband who is not good for them.

Of course, I have to be (perhaps unrealistically) hopeful that prince charming is out there, I'm allergic to cats!

I'm allergic as well! Ha, I would love to join you ladies out anytime- just have a more upbeat attitude is all I am asking! You all live in one of the most gorgeous places to be all hasty regarding things like men.

BTW- one time while I was in town I met someone who I do think could be quite amazing... and I have kept in touch. So- I don't buy it ladies. They are there in the area. He also introduced me to a bunch of ladies that had SoWal thongs on their heads! That's how I found out about this forum in the first place.

We're not saying they don't exist, just that the lack of eligible bachelors is one of the few drawbacks (along w/ hurricanes, housing/living costs, and yellow flies) to this area. This place needs some drawbacks to keep it from being too perfect .

Ha! I agree- although I must say- I think some posters on here are here specically to de-rail the plans of people trying to move there- no one wants it to be overcrowded- so I get it- I just think it's funny. Because- if you think it's such a bad place to live- you wouldn't live there, ya know?

Ha- I'm not sure- we were headed to Gravel Road and the ladies seemed to be having a grand time if you know what I mean...

That was one of those moments that made me want to move there. Everyone was so friendly and nice! ( and NO it wasn't just the alcohol talking )

For a more or less Irish pub, McGuire's in Destin can fill that fix to some degree, though it tends to be overrun with tourists during the summer. And you've got to go past a good-sized (though not Super) Target and a Fresh Market to get there.

Is that the one with money all over the place? I went to the one in Pensacola in December when we had to go to the airport out there.

I will miss my Super Target...

And if you don't mind one more "men are like..." here's my favorite, courtesy of the Rev. Billy C. Wirtz:

"Men are like floor tiles. If you lay 'em right the first time, you can walk all over 'em forever."

The Rev also says, "Just because your boyfriend's got a big telescope doesn't mean you're going to see stars."

I have to say, I moved down when I was 25, and it did NOT suit me. I lasted 4 months. The company I moved to work for tanked and I moved back to NY.

There is a MAJOR lack of decent guys that were in my "age range". I also require a little motivation and job, so maybe I was being too picky. Not the best place for singles, but you can probably make it work.

I had fun though...way too much. So much I still wonder how I made it out in one piece!

Love visiting, but living didn't work for me. It's not THAT expensive either, but not totally cheap. If you've lived in a city, it won't shock you.

McGuire's is the original place with the money on the walls and ceiling.

I came down here with husband in hand, so I'm not the best expert on the local dating scene. But if you don't mind a less than polished appearance at times, the rocket scientists from Eglin can be a surprising lot of fun to hang around with.

    Woah- only 4 months?

I plan on staying for a least a year. I feel you never really know a place until you've been there for at least that long. I moved a bunch over the last 10 years and I am interested in putting myself through a lil trial period away from a life that is so settled here. I need to push myself. Shake it up a bit. This is step 1 to a "better" BlueFox

I start with an upbeat attitude, but then the single men bring me down. (But I live near ATL, not SoWal...)

Same here NoHall. That's why I have confined myself to the house until my portfolio is sparkling and all plans are perfect. A lil OCD pays off sometimes.

have to get out of here... cause sometimes I feel like this:

I'm in kind of a black mood tonight (usually I'm not) so maybe you should ignore me when I tell you that people are people whether they're in the ATL or SoWal. They all have their garbage.

Or we can see it from the "half-full" side: Some of those SoWallers are amazing. But so are some Atlantans.

Or all of that at once. Take all of it into consideration before you uproot...

looks like Cantina Laredo's bar will be a hot spot for singles. Also, the Tommy Bahama Cafe has a cool bar and will be a magnet for singles, when they open they get open. Each, has a huge oval shaped bar which has a great feel.
