#64 Recycling
February 14, 2008 by clander
Recycling is a part of a larger theme of stuff white people like: saving the earth without having to do that much.
Recycling is fantastic! You can still buy all the stuff you like (bottled water, beer, wine, organic iced tea, and cans of all varieties) and then when you’re done you just put it in a DIFFERENT bin than where you would throw your other garbage. And boom! Environment saved! Everyone feels great, it’s so easy!.......
excerpt from LA times on this blog:
White like us
A blogger explores the attitudes and foibles of a new minority group.
Gregory Rodriguez
One irony-deficient reader complained that the blog was less about white people than it was about yuppies. And without knowing it, she was cutting to the heart of the joke. Lander is gently making fun of the many progressive, educated, upper-middle-class whites who think they are beyond ethnicity or collectively shared tastes, styles or outlook. He's essentially reminding them that they too are part of a group.
"I'm writing about the white people who think they're absolutely unique and individual," Lander told me. "I'm calling them out and poking fun of myself. The things I post are all the things I like too!"

white societies (and a few others) were able to develop large cities by creating systems for mass distrubution of survival necessities: food, water, and shelter, and included in that is waste removal.
spectacular success was achieved in the early industrial age over disease and pestilence by cleaning up garbage and waste. this survival success is still strong in our culture as evidenced by our affection for well manicured clean landscapes.
recycling is a method whereby the idea of some organization of waste products is possible and the idea of actual re-using of some portions of garbage is done. this results from a relatively small investment in time and effort. maybe not to great benefit but at least a step in that direction.
at the very least today’s fledgling recycling habits will set the stage for a future that will almost certainly have to practice aggressive sustainable activity. this is a GOOD quality to possess, almost certainly other areas of the world will have to adopt this behavior eventually. the amount of filth and garbage in third world environs attests to the fact that recycling and waste control is an advanced human trait.

#75 Threatening to Move to Canada
February 24, 2008 by clander
Often times, white people get frustrated with the state of their country. They do not like the President, or Congress, or the health care system, or the illegal status of Marijuana. Whenever they are presented with a situation that seems unreasonable to them, their first instinct is to threaten to move to Canada.
For example, if you are watching TV with white people and there is a piece on the news about that they do not agree with, they are likely to declare “ok, that’s it, I’m moving to Canada.”
Though they will never actually move to Canada, the act of declaring that they are willing to undertake the journey is very symbolic in white culture. It shows that their dedication to their lifestyle and beliefs are so strong, that they would consider packing up their entire lives and moving to a country that is only slightly similar to the one they live in now.
Within white culture, it is agreed upon that if Canada had better weather it would be a perfect place.
Being aware that this information can be used quite easily to gain the trust of white people. Whenever they say, “I’m moving to Canada,” you must immediately respond with “I have relatives in Canada.”
They will then expect you to tell them about how Canada has a perfect healthcare system, legalized everything, and no crime. Though not true, it will reassure them that they are making the right choice by saying they want to move there.
But be warned, they will reference you in future conversations and possibly call on you to settle disputes about Canadian tax rates. So use this advice only if you plan to do some basic research.
Note: Canadian white people threaten to move to Europe.
Note: Europeans are unable to threaten to move anywhere.

#67 Standing Still at Concerts
February 17, 2008 by clander
Music is very important to white people. It truly is the soundtrack to their lives, meaning that white people are constantly thinking about what songs would be on the soundtrack for the biopic. The problem is that most of the music that white people like isn’t really dance-friendly. More often the songs are about pain, or love, or breaking up with someone, or not being able to date someone, or death.
So when white people go to concerts at smaller venues, what to do they do? They stand still! This is an important part of white concert going as it enables you to focus on the music, and it will prevent drawing excess attention to you. Remember, at a concert everyone is watching you just waiting for you to try to start dancing. Then they will make fun of you.
The result is Belle and Sebastian concerts that essentially looks more like a disorganized line of people than a music event.
If you find yourself invited to a concert with a white person, do NOT expect to dance. Prepare yourself for three hours of standing reasonably still. It is also advised to get a beer or (if legal) a cigarette so you have something to do with your hands. Although it is acceptable to occasionally raise one hand and point just above the stage.
Note: the addition of the drug ecstasy changes everything.
my comment: exception to the rule is white people attending WP concerts.
a comment on the site: actually a lot of white people do dance at concerts but they shouldn't.

Re: Stuff White People Like
I don't know if it's included, but white people like family crests, vacuum cleaner demonstrations, any product that claims to kill germs, timeshare, and extended warranties for things that don't usually break.

Love this one. Expensive Sandwiches
Excerpt: In most cities, if you need to find a cache of white people get yourself to a sandwich shop. Generally these places aren’t open for dinner, have a panini press and are famous for their bread.Last edited by Mango; 02-27-2008 at 10:34 PM.

Re: Stuff White People Like
You're right -- I rarely see any black people at Mexican restaurants, even at Nuevo Laredo or Taqueria Del Sol in the city of Atlanta which is predominately black. I never see black people at Doc Chey's in Virginia-Highlands. The former are mostly frequented by whites and Latinos, and the latter by whites and Asians.

Re: Stuff White People Like
Don't make fun of pink and green -- my new tar is pink and green because I'm a honky with spring fever. I can't wait to get to the beach.
Oh, another thing most white people like -- getting a tan. The only white person on the planet I know who has never had a tan is my sister-in-law. She's the whitest white person you've ever seen (my daughter is a close second). SIL hates warm weather and hates being out in the sun, and thus she has never moved away from Wisconsin where she and hubby were born. When SIL and BIL vacation, they go north so it's colder or go to Europe in the winter.

Re: Stuff White People Like
You know, as as result of this thread, I am now one white person on the "outide looking in" after reading all the posts, I have come to some conclusions...
One is the monumental discovery (somewhat generalized) that white people are actually very accidentally or incidentally amusing, and are really somewhat odd.
I am laughing on the inside and this is a very healthy perspective on race.Last edited by hnooe; 02-29-2008 at 09:26 AM.

#78 Multi-lingual children. Ah- my dream!

"All white people want their children to speak another language. There are no exceptions. They dream about the children drifting in between French and English sentences as they bustle about the kitchen while they read the New York Times and listen to Jazz."

Re: Stuff White People Like
love this one!!! how true is the entire thing? I like one of the comments:
I think French is the de rigeur second language for white people.
here is my own comment:
of course, we all need to learn to speak spanish, but I want to learn Italian so I can summer in Tuscany. but would just die to speak french! oh well, my parents did not send me to language immersion pre-school so I'm basically pucked.
-
Re: Stuff White People Like
Yea, well according to this, I got pucked too. I could be eating pucking fondue in Switzerland right now.
White people believe that if they had been given French language instruction when they were younger, their lives would have turned out very differently. Instead of living in the US, they would be living and working abroad for the United Nations or some other organization with a headquarters in Switzerland or The Hague.

#26 Manhattan (now Brooklyn too!)
January 26, 2008 by clander

Often times if you ask a white person about where to travel, you will get a lot of responses. But if you ask them about New York, white people will go nuts. They love the city universally and all either live there, have lived there, will live there or want to live there.......

Re: Stuff White People Like
please report on the one that "speaks to you" most. in your own words.
on the npr show the other day, the guy said he was adding an item to address the "self importance" of white people by adding Blogging as a thing that white people do a lot of. I was so cracking up when I heard this. of course they acknowledged that not all bloggers are white, but its like 99.9%.

#3 Film Festivals
January 18, 2008 by clander
White people can’t enough of Film Festivals. Especially Sundance, Toronto, and Cannes. The reason why they love them so much can be due to a number of factors.
Fact #1 - 90% of white people have taken a film class at some point in their life.
Fact #2 - White people like feeling smart without doing work - 2 hours in a theater is easier than 10 hours with book.
Fact #3 - If white people aren’t going back packing, they generally like to travel with a specific purpose.
Fact #4 - 75% of white people believe they either have the potential to or will become filmmakers/screenwriters/directors at some point.
Fact #5 - White people hate stuff that is ‘mainstream’ - so they go to film festivals where they see movies that every other person in their demographic wants to see. It’s a pretty sweet way to rebel.
Fact #6 - It is required by white person law, that you publicly declare that foreign cinema is better than Hollywood Cinema, and on par with Indie Film.
Fact #7 - White people earn credibility by being into film from strange countries - “oh you liked Batman? Yeah, I didn’t see it, I’m really into Serbian film now. They had a great retrospective at the Vancouver Festival.”
