Re: a new earth
Here is description from Amazon
Book Description
Building on the astonishing success of The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle presents readers with an honest look at the current state of humanity: He implores us to see and accept that this state, which is based on an erroneous identification with the egoic mind, is one of dangerous insanity.
Tolle tells us there is good news, however. There is an alternative to this potentially dire situation. Humanity now, perhaps more than in any previous time, has an opportunity to create a new, saner, more loving world. This will involve a radical inner leap from the current egoic consciousness to an entirely new one.
In illuminating the nature of this shift in consciousness, Tolle describes in detail how our current ego-based state of consciousness operates. Then gently, and in very practical terms, he leads us into this new consciousness. We will come to experience who we truly are—which is something infinitely greater than anything we currently think we are—and learn to live and breathe freely."Save the tata's!!!"

Re: a new earth
I read lots of similar material. I sometimes wonder at what is meant by "humanity". We have broad and diverse cultures across the world and I would imagine that the way the mind is ordered is vastly different across some of these cultures. My point being- who is the humanity ready to make the jump? It seems too broad a term. I realize that is Amazon's description and not source material to which I am responding. I'll read the source too.

Re: a new earth
aggieb,
Regardless of who's recommending a book, I always find it more enlightening to read both the positive and negative customer reviews at Amazon. I also google book titles for other reviews, and just out of curiosity author's biographies. Many times in the negative reviews the customer will recommend a book they liked better, and you get to start all over again!

Re: a new earth
I wonder if the only people that will actually read this book are the ones who are already "enlightened" to some degree?

My house director has this book, isn't there an internet course that goes along with the book?~~Dream like you will live forever....Live like you will die tomorrow~~

Re: a new earth
This is the first time I heard of the book...very interesting subject. There is an education series call the Landmark Forum similar to what I think I am reading the book is about. It's a 3 day conference, 12 hours a day, very intense and exhausting, but very well worth the effort. You come out of the conference feeling so much lighter, happier and incredibly positive. Shed the ego, your baggage and it is so much easier to deal with negative people and situations without the negativity rubbing off on you. You finally realize, once the ego, etc... is gone, that you do not have to own other peoples issues.

Re: a new earth
My mom is reading this and is doing the online course that goes along with it, and she loves it.
I haven't made much of an effort to look at this book. I kind of feel like Oprah is using it in her ever-growing plot to take over the world.

Re: a new earth
I am enjoying the book. The online class has been a new experience too. The author (Eckhart Tolle) ......amazing teacher. You can download the world wide classroom at Oprah.com.
My favorite part in chapter 1 is about, spirituality and religion.
The second chapter is Ego: The current State of Humanity. Identification with Things, The Illusion of Ownership, Wanting: The Need for More.
It is very deep, but simple at the same time."I cannot tell you any spiritual truth that deep within you don't know already. All I can do is remind you of what you have forgotten" Eckhart Tolle

Amazing book and if you allow it can totally change your perspective. Also, you can check out the XM satellite radio discussion with Tolle on channel 156 at 3pm. It's helpful in understanding the material.

Re: a new earth
I've totally tried not to out myself regarding spiritual beliefs, but here goes the outting
.....
From what I can see about what Tolle is saying, it's very similar to some of the basic teachings of Kabbalah. Light = God. Ego = Darkness/Satan (pronounced suh-tan). The ego/Satan is not some outside entity, but works from inside of us, our ultimate competitor. Darkness is a veil over the Light. By working to actively remove the veils through something called restriction, i.e. giving/sharing, and not just receiving for the self alone, you bring more Light not only into your own life but into the lives of those around you and ultimately bring enlightenment to yourself and to the world so that we can transform our world into a peaceful, loving place.
Okay, I'm outted.
We are meant to transform the world. That is what the Masters before us have taught. Jesus, Buddha, and all the others. It starts with each of us.
I'm a book-aholic, so I'll be going out to get this one ASAP. Thanks! You need not think alike to love alike.

Yes, there is a free class on the book on Monday nights at 7pm on oprah.com. The class runs about 90 minutes, but you can watch the class after its initial run 24/7 on oprah.com Then, on Thursdays at 3pm (and repeated at other times throughout the week) are highlights from the class on XM 156 (Oprah & Friends network).
If you like this kind of thing (I do), author Marianne Williamson has been doing "A Course in Miracles" every Monday at 3pm on XM 156, but you can go online to oprah.com and all the classes so far are available there.
And, finally, the Celestine Vision hosts the Global Prayer Project every other Tuesday night via phone or computer - http://www.celestinevision.com

I would throw my two cents in, but I really can't say it any better than this.....

Good luck in whatever path you seek....

Re: a new earth
But I realized "But I'm still alive! I'm still alive and I have found Nirvana. And if I have found Nirvana and I'm still alive, then everyone who is alive can find Nirvana." I picture a world filled with beautiful, peaceful, compassionate, loving people who knew that they could come to this space at any time. And that they could purposely choose to step to the right of their left hemispheres and find this peace. And then I realized what a tremendous gift this experience could be, what a stroke of insight this could be to how we live our lives.
Which would you choose? Which do you choose? And when? I believe that the more time we spend choosing to run the deep inner peace circuitry of our right hemispheres, the more peace we will project into the world and the more peaceful our planet will be. And I thought that was an idea worth spreading.
This was very good....thank you for posting this and I am sending a link to friends."I cannot tell you any spiritual truth that deep within you don't know already. All I can do is remind you of what you have forgotten" Eckhart Tolle

Re: a new earth
From "A New Earth" page 109:
Why does the ego play roles? Because of one unexamined assumption, one fundamental error, one unconscious thought. That thought is: I am not enough. Other unconscious thoughts follow: I need to play a role in oder to get what I need to be fully myself; I need to get more so that I can be more. But you cannot be more than you are because underneath your physical and psychological form, you are one with Life itself, one with Being. In form, you are and will always be inferior to some, superior to others. In essence, you are neither inferior nor superior to anyone. True self-esteem and true humility arise out of that realization. In the eyes of the ego, self-esteem and self-humility are contradictory. In truth, they are one and the same.Follow your bliss and the Universe will open doors where there were only walls. ~ Joseph Campbell

Re: a new earth
How do you have certainty when the doctor is calling with bad news, when the government is padlocking your front door, when your child is suffering from illness? Let's be realistic here, most of us aren't on that level, yet.
For the rest of us who haven't yet mastered certainty consciousness, it's a process that looks like this: we have doubt, we acknowledge the doubt is from the Opponent, and we move on.
Our souls don't know what fear, anxiety, or worry means. Depression? Never heard of it. It's only our ego that is blind to true reality, therefore allowing lack and uncertainty to resonate.
Certainty means, although we are struggling on this path, we go forward anyway, constantly reminding ourselves, this doubt doesn't belong to me. It's the Opponent messing with my head. That's certainty. And when you take that step forward, your certainty gets stronger the next time out, so that when you fight the next round of doubts, you don't have to fight as hard.
Eventually you reach a level where you have 100% certainty in every part of your life, and when the Opponent comes a-knockin', there's no one home to answer the door. Or as my father and teacher Rav Berg once put it, the restaurant is closed.
Every time we chase down our negative thoughts, we feed the monster. Every time we think there's no hope, we make it stronger. Every time we think unhealthy thoughts, it gets healthier.
This week, don't chase — replace! The onslaught is too great; you can spend from here until eternity dealing with every negative thought that pops into your head. Just work at ignoring them, and insert better thoughts. Every time you have a whopper of a thought, inject an equally positive one. Think about things that are good in your life, people that do love you, gifts you can use now, miracles that have already happened for you. Or rather, because of you.
Don't be confused about what certainty is. It's not a consciousness that comes to us just like that. It requires a lot of effort and hard work. But it pays off huge dividends, so get on it. I know you can do it.
All the best,
Yehuda
