    Long hair on guys? thoughts

I have had long shoulder length hair and shaved to the scalp. I just hit my 40th and I am thinking about growing it out again. Just a little background. My hair is going grey and is super thick and I will probably never be bald. What do you girls/guys think about long hair on dudes. No mullets just long all over. I wanna get some thoughts if possible. Job not withstanding and give me some hair stories and pics if possible. Thanx---Sonny

Sonny, I grew up during the days of really long hair on guys. Loved it then, not so much now. I will say once in a while...it's ok..but it's got to be about more than the hair.

Sonny---I think it totally depends on your personality and maybe that of the woman you want to attract. Long hair says fun, and maybe not so professional- short and trendy says hip and professional. I prefer the short. Ok, I might get slammed for the not so professional part---maybe it says creative type, artist type, biker type or beach bum. Does that help or fit?

Rocket had long, beautiful golden locks for YEARS and cut it literally days before we met.

    My personal preferance is short.

But I like beards, goatees and all manner of facial hair as long as it isn't sprouting out of anybody's nose or ears.

Well...I wanna attract my wife and I always act professional, in sales and restaurant management for the last 24 years but my post is more of a "do you like the looks of Brad Pitt with long hair or short or how, Tom Cruise, Orlando Bloom or even Jack Black? " So let's try this. Would you buy a car from a guy with a ponytail? Sorry--my keyboard is jacked or I would have some cool smilies with this, and an enter key. Sonny

What kind of hair do you have...soft and thick or wirey and thick? Wirey and thick...forget it...soft and thick....okay as long as you find a stylist to layer it and let it flow naturally. Well groomed, if it is long. Goatee.....oh yeah....like that. Keep it neat!

Thick and wavey if I let it grow out. I keep it short and buzzed. I also have a beard that grows in red as opposed to my dark brown hair w/ grey specs.

Does he need a keyboard player, or basist--perhaps a funky guitarist?--Ehhh-I am going to bed and getting up early to go get a grayt keybord. I do look a little like the first pic though. If I knew how to post pics i would download a picture of the guy from the THOMPSON TWINS. Just with more blond/grey/brown. Later kids, Sonny

Re: Long hair on guys? thoughts

I tend to chafe against the fashion police. But then, I don't care for any look that comes off as *too* cultivated. Like destindreamin, I came of age in those heady (no pun intended) days of the late 60's early 70's.

When I googled the Thompson Twin guy, it looked to me like he likes his mousse. That's okay, but as destindreamin says, a man needs to be about more than his hair.

I have a 40-something bro-in-law who wore long hair (ponytail length) for awhile, and I loved it. He has since cut it shorter.

I look for cleanliness, obvious use of a comb and trimmed ends--that's about it.
    Ditto for facial hair.
And the whole shaved head thing has me a bit bemused. Of course I can understand shaving your head if you are almost bald, or going bald.
Other than that, why give up having hair while you still have it?

It depends on the guy- sometimes long hair actually makes a man look older, especially if the man's hair is thin and he is trying to compensate lack of thickness by going with length.

Bdarg had a ponytail for awhile- and it is now in my jewelry box, along with the kid's locks from the first haircuts.

I agree with this. I Hated Tom Cruise's hair in "Fourth of July", but loved Orlando's hair and Brad Pitt's hair in various movies. My favorite long haired man is Bon Jovi. I like the artistic look, so long hair says that to me.
I think long hair and a goatee are sexy, I am still looking for one of these guys, that still look sexy at my age....

    Short.

It is the rare man that looks better with long hair. Richard Gere comes to mind.

It has to be really gorgeous if it's gonna be long.

I ran across a picture of a certain somebody recently who had thick, shoulder-length curls when he was in college. I wish he would post a picture of it, (NoHall clears her throat--*ahem*) since I don't have a copy...

I like it short but on the shaggy side. Merman has to keep his hair collar-short for the office but I love it when it gets long enough that the ends curl up. Unfortunately he takes his curls for the cue that it's time to get a haircut.

I echo destindreamin and Cil's comments about my age and era. I tend to still go for the long hair look. But it is because I, myself, happen to be in the more creative personality category.

I have noticed men have completely different personalities depending on their hair length. My son will have long, wild hair and he takes on a more carefree personality. Then he'll get a supershort, trendy cut and immediately he becomes much more polished and "hot" (according to him ).

I say it's all about your personality. Go for it.

when my husband's hair starts to get shaggy, I tell him it's time to get it cut because he starts to look "homeless." Unfortunately, he doesn't have hair that starts to curl on the ends!

And then there those of us that hair is a nightmare. I was blessed with my mother's side of the family and have never had a great head of hair. Thin and straight. I would love to be able to shave my head, but I think someone took a ball-peen hammer to my head while I was still in the womb. Those with a lumpy head must keep their hair.

I love long hair on guys, but not on all of them. It really depends on how you look with long hair. See photos above. My husband had really long hair when we met and always. He cut it all off, and I nearly left... not a good look for him! He is currently growing his hair long again. That said, he is a blonde surfer type guy, and the long hair really suits him and his personality.

I think Grey, thick, non-balding hair could look great long. It just depends on how well kept it is. Don't grow it long thinking it will be easier -- it will need MUCH more maintaining

Yes, although I really hate buying cars and try to negotiate online or phone before going in. But, sure I would have not prejudices w/ long hair there.

Clean, well cut and groomed long hair can be very sexy. I like the shaved-bald look as well. It just kinda has to fit the guys look and head. Like he's not trying ya know........not like this guy........

long or short, just please keep it clean. These Hollywood dudes that just show up with unclean hair just freak me out.

Over the ear is fine with me, as some have really ugly ears, but I personally prefer it off the collar.

Would I buy a car from a guy with a pony tail, probably not, I prefer women sales people.

Is this guy from Niceville? Subtract 20-something years and 40-something pounds and I think I may have dated this guy in high school for a while.

Used to take him FOREVER to wash, dry, and fix his hair to go out.
