How long do background checks take?

Im trying to get a new job but they are still waiting on my fingerprint cards. They said it shouldnt take more than 10 weeks. Im already on the 11th week and it still hasnt come back yet! Its just soo frustrating because I really need to start this job soon! Does anyone have any idea why its taking this long? I have lived in many different states...I dont know if that could have anything to do with it...any help would be great! Thanks!

My dh had one done for a license a few years back (CAM I think)... it took a while. At the time I think it took at least 3 months, maybe longer. It was somewhat ridiculous considering there wasn't a single spot on his record, ever.

I don't know much about background checks, other than mine is not available for release since I am married to a law enforcement officer, but who did your employer go through? FBI, or can FDLE do it?

That's the part that took so long for us too, the FBI fingerprint stuff. But they warned us it would take up to 6 months (post 9-11), so when we got it back in less than that we were actually surprised.

Took my wife 2 trips to the police station to get a good set for the FIB to review. That was a total of 4 months or so. Post 9/11, that is .

The FBI takes forever. If it's been as long as you say I would get a stack of fingerprint cards and get a few extras done at the Sheriff's Department. They are also good at losing fingerprint cards.

Wouldnt I have been notified if for some reason, my fingerprint card needed to be redone? I would think that I did a really good job making visible fingerprints.

If the FBI was unable to classify your prints, the entity requesting the background check would be notified. They would then contact you to submit new prints. The process is often delayed for unexplainable reasons. If your prints were done with ink instead of the new automated electronic system, you can add even more processing time.

The experience I have had with the FBI, it does take some time due to the number of backgrounds they do. But it sounds like you should be nearing the end and getting results soon. Hang in there.

You won't find much. I did receive a warning ticket for speeding from an Alabama State Trooper many years ago. He got the point across to me. Of course I had my military uniform on at the time, I think that helped.

Another person you could call who does checks in south Walton is Donna John, who can be contacted at djinvestigations@msn.com and may offer some assistance on time and how to shorten it.

    background search FBI

The FBI is embarking on a $1 billion effort to build the world's largest computer data_base_ of peoples' physical characteristics, a project that would give the government unprecedented abilities to identify individuals in the United States and abroad. Digital images of faces, fingerprints and palm patterns are already flowing into FBI systems in a climate-controlled, secure _base_ment here.
"Bigger. Faster. Better. That's the bottom line," said Thomas E. Bush III, assistant director of the FBI's Criminal Justice Information Services Division, which operates the data_base_ from its headquarters in the Appalachian foothills. Private background search companies already provide instant on-line results. The increasing use of biometrics for identification is raising questions about the ability of Americans to avoid unwanted scrutiny.

Since I have security clearance for the airport operating area up here in Atlanta I had to have a 10 year background check and fingerprints processed by the Federales. The prints were electronic. Took less than 10 days to get them back from the FBI...

Yep, electronic. Takes a day with the FBI - perhaps the 3rd party screener takes longer. Or, maybe they hire someone to dig up court records before getting back to your employer? You never know these days.
