Community Cleanup on Nov. 3
The Scenic Corridor Association will host its second annual Scenic 98 Cleanup Day on Nov. 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. We’re inviting residents, businesspeople, and everyone who cares about our community to help us beautify the corridor that day, and we’d love for you to join us as well.
Volunteers will meet at 9:30 a.m. at Café Provence, on the west side of the corridor, or at Shades on the Loop, located in Inlet Beach on the east side of the corridor, and will enjoy a complimentary lunch when the cleanup is complete.
We need all the help we can get to keep South Walton beautiful. Transportation, free T-shirts and other goodies will be available. Please help us and show your support on Nov. 3.
We hope you can join us for the 2005 Cleanup Day, and we look forward to working with you to keep our special community beautiful!
Formed in 1994, the Scenic Corridor Association is a 501(c)4 nonprofit organization whose mission is to preserve and protect the scenic nature of the Highway 98 corridor while supporting responsible growth. If you’d like more information, please visit www.ScenicCorridorAssociation.com

I wouldn't worry about the snakes- I think the purple hairdo might freak them out a bit!

The purple hair might help you be seen (Of course that also could serve as a distraction!)
Snakes? Attach a nail on a broom handle or stick so you don't have to reach into the grass....
When you become professional, you get to have these fancy "Trash Pick Up Tongs"
-
Re: Community Cleanup on Nov. 3
Actually, the Scenic Corridor Clean Up folks will issue to you an orange safety vest. They also have the fancy pick up tongs, which will be useful for some garbage, but you will be bending over to pick up trash with your hands too. Definitely bring gloves. These guys will provide everything but the gloves. Also, bring your appetite because Shades and Cafe Provence will be serving lunch to the volunteers immediately following the clean up.

Re: Community Cleanup on Nov. 3
I'm so sorry we won't be back at the beach until the 12th, because I'd surely help. Our own neighborhood does alley clean-ups and it's a lot of fun meeting your neighbors AND doing something useful.
Of course if I were there, I'd be tagging right behind Sueshore.
Will you post if there's another scheduled clean-up?

Re: Community Cleanup on Nov. 3
Hey,
Thanks for the info. Smiling Joe. The SCA does usually have gloves on hand, but they tend to be the thin latex kind. The Tourist Development Council usually donates them to the cause.
So if you forget the gloves - fear not.
It should be a beautiful day tomorrow and Shades and Cafe Provence will have some tasty food.
There are usually some other freebies as well, T-shirts, etc.
They will also have some of those "fancy tongs" on hand for you to use.
As for the crazy drivers ... I've done this clean up before and never had a problem. Most people slow down when they see you working and you're not allowed to clean in the medians, so it is safe.
A lot of areas by the highway have sidewalks now too, which is nice.
I look forward to meeting some of you sowal'ers in person! Bring a friend - or three! Let's keep South Walton looking great!

Oh yeah, I forgot about the latex gloves.
For those of you participating, the SCA (Scenic Coridor Assoc) would like a head count. This will also be helpful to know for lunch. Please contact Marilyn at 267-5757 to sign up.
The act of not littering is not enough to keep this place clean. Please help keep our area clean by joining us tomorrow morning.

Wonder what my jailhouse number will be? wlaner....get your sorry rear out there tomorrow....they put us in teams of two...between the two of us we can definitely do TRASH! I'll be at Cafe Provence....9:15 sharp!

Re: Community Cleanup on Nov. 3
ATTENTION MISS KITTY!!!
You will need a fancy pick up TONG, not a fancy THONG.
Thought I should let you know so you wouldn't show up wearing one to match your orange vest.

Re: Community Cleanup on Nov. 3
A friend of mine doing a summer cleanup job found a silver belt buckle worth 400 bucks (still attached to belt and pants), but he jumped around and yelled about it and they pressured him to sell it and give it to charity - keep your finds to yourselves and none will be the wiser, but you will be the richer! In the immortal words of Jackie Gleason in (oh, darn, I can't remember the name of the old movie) - "Screw Charity - let her get her own!". SS can make her own movie called "Miss Kitty Goes To Vegas!"

Re: Community Cleanup on Nov. 3
Mission Accomplished! I crashed for three hours when I got back! You do this and you will never litter or look at trash on the side of the road the same way again!!! I had a great partner...he did the ditches! He also found a "friendly" snake (yeah, right...I fell for that!). Lots of fire ants...no bites.
Good people...we had a great lunch (French BBQ) and a free T-shirt! I told them I bet we will always remember our little patch when we drive by! On the way home, all I saw was trash!!!!
Some good finds:
car mat
leatherette cushion
garage sale sign...with address
cell phone (not us)
large piece of velcro
And the number one thing I had hoped not to find....CONDOM!
Miss Kitty is calling Jeb....Go ahead and fine the freaks that litter...but make them also pickup the highways with their barehands and teeth in the middle of summer in a wet suit!!!!

Sueshore, I will be returning to the beach next weekend, and I assure you that we will be there personally inspecting your handiwork. I hope you didn't leave anything behind.
Congrats, doll, for doing such good community service!
