    garbage along hwy 98

is anyone else getting upset with all the garbage that blows onto highway 98 roadsides as you head from sandestin to hwy 30A?? i believe most of it comes from construction workers who drive pickup's and don't cover the backs, thereby allowing all their debris to blow out. i see white paint buckets, papers, etc. that are all construction-related. then, to add to the mess, there are empty beer bottles, cups, food wrappers that tourists most likely dump. it would be difficult to believe that residents of our 30a area would be distributing their litter roadside. i noticed that the old snapperhead's is being reopened as another restaurant - hopefully, we won't have to deal with the beer bottles and other debris along 30a that used to occur from snapperhead's business. my point is that i don't drive to other peoples' homes' and dump my garbage so they need to take theirs home. i know cindy meadows has been very vocal about the litter problem in this area.

Sounds like a great opportunity to form a volunteer task force and set an example. Smelt it dealt it.

I witnessed a garbage truck going down Hwy 98 last week and an entire black garbage bag flew off the truck onto 98 between 331 and 283. I've seen debris fly out of garbage trucks before, but not a whole bag.

I have seen a lot of stuff fly out of trucks. It seems a lot of trash gets thrown in the bed and when they get to their next destination it is miraculously gone. Problem? What problem? I'm sure a lot of it is also unintentional and just being careless with construction materials not being secured.

The Scenic corridor group has periodic cleanups which are posted here and elsewhere. Also the State cleans up a lot before mowing. I saw them cleaning and mowing eastern portions of 98 this past week.

I don't think you can blame just one group for littering - lots of stuff goes flying out of the backs and windows of vehicles - both intentionally and unintentionally.

There is a BIG increase in yard trash when there are high numbers of tourists in town (especially the ATL folks), but I also see lit cigarettes flying out of windows 24/7/365!

My big gripe is the broken glass in the bike lane. It's mostly brown so I assume beer bottles. The other day saw a smashed cell phone, that sure wasn't intentional. I stopped and picked up a really nice Brookstone multitool that someone dropped just infront of the Donut hole.

That's what the lovely xtracycles are for! Not the broken glass, but being able to get the multitool.

I have a stash of stuff in the joggling stroller right now that I have been picking up. Found a new hubcap last night across from Elmo's, so if anyone's missing one let me know. No pics cause no camera.

It is amazing the amount of broken glass from beer bottles. The scary part of that is the drunk driving aspect as to how the glass gets on the road. Not only is it littering, but it is also DUI.

what's amazing is that there is litter anywhere. Do they think it is miraculously going to go away? They live here(big picture)...

cigarette butts is a rant that nobody wants me to get started on.

I just drove along 98 from Sandestin to West 30A and I couldn't believe the trash and litter.

I wonder if alot of it is from Memorial weekend?

It might be time for the county to get the guys in the stripe suits down here.

This is an example of something that bothers me about this place. It's real easy to point fingers at "tourists" when something goes wrong in the area. Although I spend a good bit of time in SoWal, I am technically a tourist for the simple reason I don't own property there. I have never and will never throw anything out of my vehicle. On the occasion I see people littering from their vehicle, it almost always has a Walton County tag on the back.
