Is it 3-4 P-6s? If so, there are about 6 of them stationed out of Destin. The pilots are all friends and go flying together all the time. For the last 2 years, they've been nice enough to give a little air show for the Seaside half marathon. A couple of the pilots live here in SoWal.

It was grayt, floating in the pool at WaterColor and watching the plans almost crash. The tourists where all excited that they knew about Eglin (that army base nearby
).
-
They were stunt planes, not the old T-6's. Did you see the guys jumping out of the third plane? The pilot in the green plane was incredible. I wonder if they had cameras in the cockpit and if they will youtube them tonight. Now that would be cool. I took some video but from afar, and couldn't see my screen, but I doubt the video captured much of anything. I think Kurt got some footage.

Were those the 3 torch looking things that sort of showed up around 5?
-
-
Anybody know if they were intentionally stalling or just cutting the engine?
-
-
There are three T-6 Texans based out of Destin. The last time I rented a 172 down there I talked to one of them. One is a contractor and the other is a Dentist. Don't know anything about the third.

I only asked since they would go vertical at points and the engine would die. I know planes stall at certain points and can be restarted (the older ones) so I wasn't sure. SC just did a drive by posting and didn't answer the question.

Don't make me have to wiki for an hour!

The pilots were doing this kind of flying, right over the Gulf, maybe in front of Seaside. (Caution -- there is a cuss word on the video.) --->>>clicky

I'm no expert, but that seems REALLY stupid with waves involved.

Acrobatics over Grayon?
About 5:30 this afternoon I could hear an airplane performing acrobatics. Once or twice, I saw it climbing, and from my place near Eastern Lake, it looked like the plane was maybe just past Seaside.
Got in the car and drove down there, but the plane was gone.
Anybody see or know anything?

I'm back...
Without seeing the moves this is just speculation. If the plane is riding the engine going vertical, they will pull the throttle all the way back when they head back downhill. They do it for two reasons...overspeeding the airframe and overspeeding the engine. This is standard stuff. I could get all technical on you all and go into the difference between constant speed and fixed pitch props but won't. Just know that they mean to do it, and nothing bad will come of it!
The older airplanes that you may be mentioning are aircraft like Stearmen and Wacos. They have a gravity feed fuel system that isn't made to go upside down. You will actually hear the engine starve for fuel when they roll inverted, but it will start back up by itself when the airplane is righted. Again...normal stuff

I see those guys about every weekend! They're terrific. They were flying over Okaloosa Isl and the FWB sound last weekend so low that I'm surprised there weren't wrecks. I've often seen them over the coast along SoWal when I beachwalk on Sunday mornings, although I haven't been there the last couple weeks. Wish I could let them know they're appreciated!

Very cool way to spend the afternoon - floating in water and watching an air show!

Must be the "T-6's" that I see out here, then. It's just beautifully synchronized flying; Like water ballet, without water, or people's limbs, or those nose-pincher thingys.
Or rubber caps."I love quick-time 'harch.'"

What a grayt show!! They were terrific and amazing!! Also enjoyed the kite surfer except when he was scooping around in the lake around all the kids!
-
Franny, after I walked off the beach, the planes had refueled and came back, so I hung around watching Part II. I was looking over the inlet/outlet, and never noticed the kite, but suddenly, I see Ed pop out over the sand dunes doing a flip or two -- I was startled because I totally wasn't expecting it. Ed is very skilled with that kite surfer and has good control, unless his strings break and he gets dragged across hwy 98, like he did in PC. If you are ever out in the water when Ed comes surfing in on that kite, just stay put, and he will go around you. (don't try to play chicken with him.)
JFunn, that is the best pic I've seen of the planes. I would have really enjoyed being right in front of that show.

I wonder if some of these guys are the Max Mathews clan???

Along these same lines, I sure wish the Blue Angels would do a show down this way. I know Walton and Okaloosa counties are "Air Force country," but have y'all ever tried to get off Santa Rosa Island after a Blue Angels show at Pensacola Beach?" It's worse than any football traffic I've ever been in.

We had perfect "seats" for the show at Grayton Beach State. We had my son's 7th birthday party at one of the covered pavilions on the lake. After 2 hours of a tribute to Pirate's of the Caribbean, complete with a buried treasure hunt after we found a map in a mysterious looking bottle floating in the lake on a kayak trip to "Tortuga", we were treated to an incredible air show. Later on the way home my son asked "Dad are you glad we could afford all that cool stuff like the treasure hunt and the kayaks and the stunt planes for my birthday?" I said I sure was, I wanted his party to extra special!
If you can't fix it with a hammer... you've got an electrical problem.

I thought the air show was in conjunction with a large group that is at WaterColor for about three days.

I just saw the green plane from yesterday's show heading East by Gulfplace. Maybe we'll get an encore presentation!

When the Blue Angels are practicing in Pensacola, you can often get a pretty good view of the practice from Big Lagoon State Park just west of NAS Pensacola.

This just in:No more stunt plane shows at Seaside. It turns out that several of the homeowners complained to the FAA regarding violation of their airspace. On the agenda for the next HOA meeting will be the formation of an exploratory commitee to procure barrage blimps to tether along the beach embossed with the phrase 'go away'.
In a rare display of cooperation, Watercolor has agreed to chip in funds if the blimp purchase is agreed to as there was an unfortunate exacerbation of the dog living above the former Cerulean's irritable bowel syndrome due to the engine noise.
Rosemary Beach has declined to participate in such unfriendly behavior, however they have instructed the security guards posted at all their beach access points to open fire on any aircraft felt to potentially attract gawkers from Seacrest Beach.

The airshow was for a YPO group out of Texas. They rented the entire INN at Watercolor and have many activities that are planned for them. The airshow being one of them. I know this because my beach service is in Watercolor and everyone had to get out of the water for an hour or so so the planes could perform.
Cheers!
