    Kitten shopping!

The vet also recommended getting a kitten for the Jesus Cat today, so I'm going to look at some fresh fur-babies tomorrow night. Their picture was on the wall at the vet--very cute...more on that in a minute.

My dad has been saying for years, "When something happens to the cats we have, we aren't getting any more durned cats!" The funny thing is that our cats usually find us. I brought Hoot (the Jesus Cat) and Anny from Nashville, but the rest (including Smudge) have just showed up. But Smudge is the last kitten we've seen, and he showed up 7 years ago.

After Smudge went, we re-opened the debate. For the last 7 years, we've been using kittens as a threat with Dad--instead of a lump of coal in his stocking, we tell him he's going to get a kitten if he doesn't behave. Now Dad (who comes from a long line of dog people) wants a cat. At first Dad said he wanted another outside cat like Hoot, since Hoot is so good at keeping the vermin away. However, we have learned that some cats are just good at that and others aren't. We also discussed how outdoor cats often have short, violent lives. Hoot is the 3rd one we've had who has lived past 14, but 3 out of 30-something still isn't great odds.

So I called the lady who left the picture of the very cute kittens at the vet. She has 4--a white long-haired girl with silver tips who has had the most calls, a silver long-haired boy, and a black girl-boy short-haired set. I asked Dad what he thought, and he said (to my complete surprise) "Well, how many of them are you going to bring home?"

    Ummm...one...?

But then he pipes up that Hoot is 14 years old and probably won't last another year. I reminded him that we've had 2 16-year-old cats, thank you so much, and that the vet said he looked great this morning...but I saw his point. Besides that, we called Hoot and Anny the "bookends" before Anny died. They were littermates and terribly cute about it.

So, pending a meeting with the kittens tomorrow, we have a decision to make: Dad thought that we may not want the black ones because it would be too sad after losing Smudge, but I plan to pick them up on Friday the 13th...

Either way, I would like to give them the names I almost gave Hoot and Anny: Ev and St'betsy. (You'll have to say it out loud.)

Unless, of course, the group would like to name the kittens ... I'll get you started:

    Rinse and Spit
    Scratch and Sniff
    Shock and Awe...

Openup and sayah. I'm new at this...
I'm not that clever with names.

I had finches named Bo and Sissy.

    I like scratch and sniff.

OOOh, you could name them after sowallers.

How about tweedle dee and tweedle dum. That was the name of my kitty and his brother when we got him from the pound. Supposedly we got tweedle dee, but trust me we got tweedle dum.

If you use, "Ev and St'betsy," they might meow with British accents. That could be annoying. They'll demand marmalade and will try to wear your underthings.

I think you should go orange, and name them Mango and Tango.

But my parents are still die-hard Baptists, so I'm thinking Ben and Jerry.

Mango, orange wasn't an option. Focus.

Mom wants me to get the black male and the white female, and we're still leaning toward Ev & Stabetsy. However, given my upcoming visit to the Chicago field museum and their color, I'm thinking the Ghost and the Darkness sounds kinda nice...

I'm surprised that no one has stated the obvious. This has run through my head since Mom said she wanted the black & white:

I would go with Shakespearian names simply because I think cats are sophisticated... for example, Mercutio & Benvolio, Hamlet & Ophelia, or Rosencrantz & Guildenstern. But I'm also a total nerd, so.....

Although, on second thought, nicknames might be complicated.....

    How about:
    Abbott & Costello
    Felix & Oscar
    Scarlett & Rhett
    Simon & Garfunkel
    Ebony & Ivory
    Chip & Dale
    Kit & Caboodle
    Melody & Harmony

Edit: I took too long posting... I totally had Ebony and Ivory, but I wanted to come up with some more before I posted. Oh well.

Well since no one else has said it.

When naming cats you have to make sure the ending sound is different as that is what the cats actually here, not the whole thing. For instance ebony and ivory wouldn't work because they would both respond everytime. It also needs to be different from the Jesus cat or he will think that you are scolding him for something he didn't do (remember they are kittens it will happen).

Cat training tip: Water gun! Don't let them see you hit them with the shot, but they will scoot and not come back.

These aren't Persian--my allergies won't handle a Persian or Himalayan. Domestic long-hairs are okay if they're indoor cats and I bathe them as kittens.

The picture at the vet was so gorgeous that I plan to ask the owner to send it to me.

That's his screen name. I believe the story of his conversion is in my blogs somewhere. I have to confess that he has backslid some in the last year--he doesn't wait for grace over his food anymore.

Bad enough. But even worse, just now I read that all British men sound like Cockney character actors out of Mary Poppins with a perverted desire to wear fine upstanding American women's knickers. And if you are going to try and imitate cockney slang you have to realise it has moved on since the sixties.
I hope Merman never sees this thread!

Okay, other than Scott and Zelda, the rest of these I found online.
I don't even know if the kittens are male and female.

In my life I've known 3 dogs named Tina. 2 miniature pinchers and 1 chiwawa. ( I have no idea how to spell it) What do you think this says about this name?

One last thing, please keep your future children in mind. You could be seriously hampering a stripper or drag queen name.

My Dad, on his own, has suggested a set of names which I believe will stick. This will be announced at a later date.

However, as my mother and I were looking at them, I realized that the blonde and the gray looked a lot like two of my friends, so I may end up calling them by BB & FFF's names...
Life doesn't get any better than this.
