Matt,
Take a look at http://www.waltonsun.com/news/divide...nal_items.html
if you haven't read it already.
Could you ask Commissioner Meadows why she stated in a recent official BCC meeting that one of our influential neighbors was "selfish and totally out of line"?
Since I and many others were not at the meeting I think it would be beneficial for Ms. Meadows to "frame" what prompted such a statement that appears on the surface to be disrespectful and "totally out of line".
Thanks.

Ask Cindy to join the conversation here. I bet she could tell us a thing or two when she leaves office.
Also I hear Bob Hudson has been a real thorn in her side, and now he's throwing her name out all over the place like they're tight and she is mad as a hornet about it. Maybe she is supporting a particular candidate to succeed her?[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
-
I believe she has already endorsed a candidate. In fact, I believe if you will scroll up and down here, you will see that.

I would definitely not state ( and have never stated) that I am "tight" with Cindy Meadows. I have stated that I worked with her on issues in the past. On some occassions we agreed and on others we disagreed.
If you have a different perspective are you a "thorn in her side". I have always tried to show respect for anyone in an elected position even when we disagree.
She has chosen to endorse Alan. That is her right and I respect her right to do so.
My campaign is based on issues and working to make Walton County a better place for all.Last edited by Bob Hudson; 06-29-2008 at 12:22 PM.

For the record, if it is not too late, PLEASE ask Cindy if she would have supported the Redfish Village project since she missed the vote.
Thanks again!
-
Nice show Matt. Thanks for including questions from and about SoWal.com. We look forward to seeing Cindy become more a part of our online community if and when she is available.
If she does decide to run for State office, I'm sure most in our community will back her up.
-
Here is where I am getting confused. What does it matter how she would have voted on issues that are already decided? She is not running for office.

Bob,
After listening to Cindy Meadows' responses to two of my questions above, I can now say with certainty, at least from my viewpoint, that Cindy's endorsement of another candidate does NOT hurt your chances.
Her TRUE COLORS came shining through during this interview, disappointing as it was.
She could not even take a stand on Redfish Village today on 30ARadio which Sara Comander stated was one of the most important issues that the commissioners have faced. I don't really care why she missed the vote, but I believe she owes her constituents what her position is or would have been if she were there to have voted. Lots of time, effort and money from many local property owners went into opposing this inappropriate access.
She completely dodged the issue...like a true politician.
Now that she mentioned she may run for a state representative position, I guess she can still rely on help from these same developers.
-
She doesn't owe you an explanation about a vote she never made, but I still thought she gave a decent answer anyway by saying she had not gotten enough information on the subject to be able to say how she would have voted, but that it have been a vote in the community's best interest. She also explained she was with her mother who was ill. If you can't accept it and move on then we can see your true colors.

Not a chance. That seat is for a Bay county resident when Marti Coley is finished. The people that would be needed to raise the dollars to run all are seriously committed to Bay county. Plus there are rumors of two other Walton County people trying to line up for that same seat. I just do not see it happening based on some of the positions I have seen taken.
Can that interview be found online to replay? I was busy this morning and could not listen in.
-
Kurt, trust me, she received PLENTY of information all through the RFV ordeal. She had as much information as Sara Comander did up to the day of the vote. And Ms. Comander had the courage and fortitude to oppose the access as well as the good ole boys.
And I'll repeat myself again...I don't care why Ms. Meadows missed the vote. That was not the point nor the question.
What is in the "community's best interest" as seen by Cindy Meadows? Even my arch nemisis, AndyA
, agrees the whole thing was a "bad, bad mistake".
I don't think it is asking too much from one's own commissioner to find out where they stood on such an important vote... kind of like an exit poll. For her to say she did not receive enough information to make a decision clearly speaks for itself.
Some people say RFV is past history (agree) and that it shouldn't matter (disagree). How else will the county do the "right thing" in the future when even one's commissioner who's disctrict this occurred in can not even take stand in this very very important issue and possibly influence similar future votes.
Kurt, those are my true colors...the fact that I don't want to see this RFV debacle happen again in someone else's backyard.
As everyone knows, forget the past and it will certainly repeat itself.

The show will replayed in July, and I'll let you know when. I just got a macbook and am discovering I can make podcasts really easily, so maybe a few shows will be put up online sometime in the near future.
If you PM with your email address, I should be able to send you a digital copy of the show.

BMBV,
You seem extremely commited to a cause, perhaps you should run for BCC and then despite an extremely ill family member you'll be able to make every single meeting. Cindy Meadows very clearly stated that during the vote she was with her mother in the hospital. I can assure you that almost any level of public servent would miss a vote if their mother was in the hospital.
-
PLEASE see posts #16 and #19. In both I stated (and I'll state it here a 3rd time for your benefit) that I do not care that she missed the vote. Missing the vote was not the point of my question...her position (and now the lack thereof as indicated by her) was. Do you really not see that?
I believe your post (and others') is motivated by over-zealousness to condemn the messenger instead of the message as I make myself an easy target.
So with all that aside, do you not think Cindy Meadows should share with her constituents what side she WOULD have taken HAD she been there? Don't you think that a position by her for or against would impact future RFV beach access projects waiting to happen out there? THIS is the point. And this is where she skated right through without a scratch.
Did you watch or listen to the interview?

I'm new to the forum
but I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed your show today. I also really liked your column and will miss them in the Sun.
I watched the show also on 30atelevision, but I had trouble with the audio, but it could have just been me...I'm not very computer literate.
Keep up the great work!

Yes, I was in fact approximately 5 feet from her during the entire interview. I don't think she owes any explanation as it is a done deal, she is leaving office, and regardless of what she would have done you can't change the past. As I stated in a previous post, since you feel so strongly about these issues I believe you should run for office. Mrs. Meadows had a very valid point that many people do complain about things, but do not attend the meetings to voice those opinions. It is very similar to people who complain about politicians, but don't vote. We would probably all do certain things differently in the past, but worrying about them endlessly takes away from today and planning for tomorrow.

Thanks Matt. Just finished the podcasts.
As to the other discussion, in a way, I can appreciate Cindy's response. I know I go into meetings feeling a certain way about issues, and what actually takes place at the meeting, what discussions actually happen, what answers are given, can have a profound effect on how one may or may not vote on an issue. I could see where it would be very difficult for Cindy to try take a decided position while not being present, and I am not sure that it would be fair to those that were present.
Just a thought.

I've read your responses a few times, digested them and have come to the following conclusions:
1. It is obvious to me that whatever your relationship is with Ms. Meadows has allowed her (at least in your eyes) to escape one of the biggest controversies in Walton County in her 4 years as a commissioner. And as you said, I guess since she is leaving office (but hasn't left yet), she doesn't owe her current constituents "any explanations".
2. AGAIN, yes, RFV is a "done deal"..... funny that you used those words. Someone else here on SoWal used those EXACT same words about the whole situation BEFORE the vote, implying the county had already made its mind up.
My efforts here are directed at preventing a future RFV access invasion in someone else's backyard. I guess you and Ms. Meadows don't see that as a problem or else she could have spoken up. That's not asking to much from one's commissioner, is it?
Say yes, and she upsets the developers. Say no, and she upsets the majority of the property owners.
3. You are apparently very unaware of how many people attended BCC meetings regarding RFV when you stated, "...but do not attend the meetings to voice those opinions".
You are also unaware as to the flood of emails that poured in opposing the access because the county did not follow their own zoning regulations.
4. When you said, "It is very similar to people who complain about politicians, but don't vote", well, WOW! Now you're really hitting on something. As South Walton is largely owned by out of towners, many folks who call this their second home can't vote.
You don't suppose county commissioners capitalize on this inequality, do you?

Guess my head has been in the sand.........what is the Red Fish Village issue????
-
As Meadows is not seeking re-election, I fail to see what asking a hypothetical question about a past vote accomplishes. She can't vote on it again and since she isn't going to be in office in the future, also won't be able to vote on any similar issues.
I don't think it's a Sowal conspiracy to disenfranchise second homeowners (who seem rather vocal and not so downtrodden IMO) that you are only allowed to vote in your state/district of permanent/primary residence.

BMBV, for the sake of argument, lets give Cindy the benefit of the doubt and say she voted No. It still passes 3 to 2 and you can blame the 3 male Commissioners for an utterly stupid vote, and as you say, one which ignored their own ordinance IMO. I am hoping everyone now realizes that this vote was one that totally ignored the Land Use Code and only benefited RFV. That said, I think enough controversy was created that it will be very difficult for the BCC to vote for such a miscarrage of county laws again. As I said previously RFV is a dead issue.

I want to thank you for interviewing Jerry and I (VIE Magazine) yesterday on your radio program. I am so impressed with your talents as host of your radio program 'LIVE with MATT CHRIST' and have enjoyed your articles in the Walton Sun. You can tell when somone has something special and who stands apart from the crowd, and you are just that person.
Much success at the University of Florida...you are going places!!

Yep, agreed (again), a dead issue.
I do appreciate that you agree that what the county did was wrong and for speaking up as such. We do have some common ground after all.
Let's hope you are right that it won't repeat itself. But considering the pervading attitude of the Walton County BCC, I'll never turn my back, and neither should anyone else that might find themselves in the same position.
Regarding Cindy Meadows and her lack of a stand on RFV, you're right...I think I've made my point to those that will listen. As a true politician, she will go far in state government should she pursue it.

For the record...Cindy Meadows is not a career politician........she had another career, retired, then threw her hat in the ring because she had the education, knowledge and smarts at a time her knowledge was despearately needed, to make positive changes for the county and community that she loves.
If she were still in the race, I doubt anyway would run against her, her popularity is that strong. She did a great job, but she has had enough....and I can't say that I blame her.
Whatever she chooses to do, whether private business or elected position, she will have my support.
