    Lunch on 30-A

Does anyone know of a good and affordable lunch on 30-A? I have about given up. The places that are affordable are packed with construction workers, and the food is horrible. Most of the places with decent food, are slow, and overpriced. By price I mean the 5-8 dollar range. Yesterday at one place, a sandwich and a coke cost me $13.50. I can get the same thing in Pensacola for $6.00. It's one thing if you're a here on vacation, but living here and buying lunch every day can really add up.

I am not sure where you tried. Bruno's pizza located in Seagrove Plaza has a buffet every week day. It's pretty good. Cocoons deli is also a good choice and has a variety of sandwiches, salads, bbq and an interesting selection of hot sauces and olive oils. Seagrove Village Market is good.

If I have mentioned something you've already tried my apologies.

Here is a good little website to use to find a place depending on which end of 30-A you happen to be on. It will also give you an idea of price.

    Hope this helps.

The beaches are great, there's a warm ocean breeze,
but you'll never find just a plain old grilled cheeze.

Screw lunch-sized shrimp ceasars with roasted chick peas.
Can one friggin' restaurant just serve a grilled cheeze?

    No Popeyes, no Wendys, not one Tasty Freeze;
no pizzas delivered to your door with ease.

So we'll eat our aioli beneath the palm trees
Since no friggin' restaurant serves a plain old grilled cheeze.

Ok-I am getting a little concerned here-hahehaha-am I going to have to take out a loan to feed the family of six on vacation!!!! I am assuming that we will be eating out at night and cooking during the day as we break from the beach-Are there any grocery stores nearby or should we bring everthing with us?

Here's what us "planners" do. We bring breakfast and luch stuff from home and usually eat at the condo for both meals. However, we will eat lunch out a couple of times just cause it's fun to ride bikes or walk to a neat cafe . We will eat out 4-5 nights (One really expensive place and the rest moderate). I do like to buy fresh seafood from the markets and cook dinner . If you plan on eating out for lunch and dinner. Yes, you will need to take out a 2nd maybe even a 3rd mtg on your house .

  11. Re: Lunch on 30-A

We like to refer to it as 'trickle up' economics. For illustrative purposes, let's say Kurt's wife has always bragged on his grilled cheeses at home, so much so, that Kurt decides that what will truly make him happy is to provide his grilled cheeses to the rest of world through a small restaurant or diner that we'll call 'Kurt's House of Grilled Cheeze,' again for illustrative purposes.

So Kurt goes looking for the perfect location - one that will be convenient and close enough to a busy road that someone will see his small 'Kurt's House of Grilled Cheese' sign since recent sign ordinances won't allow big ones. Kurt finds the perfect spot, a small building for lease owned by say Riverotter, again for illustrative purposes. Riverotter believes in Kurt, has tried his grilled cheeses and thinks they'll sell and provide him with a secure and steady rental income for a very, very long time. Since Riverotter paid close to two million for a 35 foot wide commercial lot and small metal building, he has to charge Kurt ten thousand dollars a month in order to cover the cost of his mortgage payment. Kurt, borrows money to buy cheese, bread, butter, a frying pan, stove and napkins. Now Kurt figures up that in order to make any profit on his grilled cheeses, he will have to charge customers $20.00 per sandwich. People complain and business slacks off. To make $20.00 seem reasonable, he figures he'll thrown in some blue cheese crumbles and roasted tomato pesto and a bag of Zapps potato chips and call them 'gourmet' grilled cheese sandwiches and give it a cutsier name like ‘Kurt’s Grilled Cheese By The Seas’ and hang Gaffrey Art behind the cash register. This is why that even though South Walton is more family oriented than a Chucky Cheeses, you’re going to pay $50.00 per child if you want to eat at one. Here, if you have to ask how much the grilled cheese cost, you probably can't afford it. Criollas started out as a hotdog stand.

I second the motion on the Publix. When we want a cheap, healthy, delicious lunch we pick up a sandwich, salad and or sushi from the Publix....then find some random wonderful spot to eat it. No waiting, no tipping, and everythings fresh and delicious. Truly, it's hard to beat the deal in the area.

But, to eat out, Louies on hwy 98 on the way to PC Beach offers basic, but good, food at decent prices. (like $6 or 7 for a blackened chicken or fish sandwich with sides) Luna del Mar has lunch special specials for $6-9.

    hmm...though now i'm finding myself craving a grilled cheeze...strange..

There's Camping On the Gulf. They have lot's of fun activities, a laundry room, a pool and the bathrooms are very clean. One of my best friends from Ontario lived there this winter and she had the best time! Quiet too.

You would have to try camping at the State park for under $100.

Real Math 101 teaches us the following:
So you buy a lunch special at $6.00. You buy a glass of tea for $1.49. Taxes about 50 cents. Unless you are a scumbag, you should be tipping $1.50 at a minimum. Add together, and the $6.00 lunch special costs you a whopping $9.49. What is so special about that? I eat lunch around here every day, and the cheapest meal, whether good or bad is going to cost me $10. The one exception is when I grab a 1/4 lb hotdog, bag of chips and a 16 oz pepsi from the Corner Store (Grayton Corners) for $3.50, take it to the Beach, and have the best view of any restaurant around.

Mike B. - We've stayed at Grayton Beach State Park cabins (cottages) and were very pleased with them, especially for around $100 per night/2 BR and in natural wooded setting. Gotta walk a little to the beach but it is not crowded.

From the driveway at Cassine, turn right onto 30-A. Then, turn right onto CR 395. Publix is on the right at the first traffic light, maybe 4 mi from Cassine.

Publix has got to be the best grocery store (excluding some of the "organic" grocery stores) I've ever been to.

Nope, I have found them and the Winn Dixie at 98 and Old Hwy30 to be priced like most.

Tater, you must remember that we locals have to shop for groceries too. So they take advantage of us all, but I am glad to have two Publix stores close by. Buying groceries is still better than eating out, as far as cost goes.

Take a look at Hidden Beach Villas. On 30-A, directly across the road from Pelayo Beach access in Seagrove. Probably about the most inexpensive rental you can find that close to the beach.

Here's one of ours, but there are about 80 others if our's is not available:

There was a line in the Beachcomber (I think that's what it's called) mentioning that Cafe Spiazza in Seaside was planning on reopening some time in May.

Anyone else remember a free monthly newspaper from a couple years back that used to cater to hospitality service employees in the area? They used to have the best gossip column about what new businesses were going in where, and were right 90% of the time even when a parent company was saying 'no comment' all over the place. I used to pick it up whenever I saw it at a gas station.

If you're too lazy to fix a sandwich or salad from ingredients bought at Publix and thus you want to eat at fast-food restaurants, just rent a place in Destin or Panama City. The whole point of 30A is its upscale ambiance and lack of tacky chain restaurants.

Well, Kurt, you're right - the quality of the beaches on 30A is the factor that made us stop vacationing at Sea Island, GA, and start vacationing on the Panhandle. However, there are other pretty beaches on the Panhandle. What sets 30A apart (and why we decided to make a major investment in the area) is the absence of tacky chain establishments and the upscale ambiance of the 30A area.

    Re: Lunch on 30-A

All I asked for was decent food, at a reasonable price. I am not to lazy to fix a salad or a sandwich, just to busy. Thanks for the many positive posts. I did get some new ideas.

    Re: Lunch on 30-A

How about pizza by the slice at Bruno's? In addition to the full buffet, they charge $1 per slice. I get 1-2 slices, drink water, and my bill is a dollar or two. Can't beat that at Micky D's!

Also, if we are too lazy to fix a sandwich (or just don't want to invest in ingredients because it's the end of a stay and we don't want to have to throw out food), we pick up sandwiches for $4.59 each at Cocoon's and take them home so we can drink beverages that are cheaper because they're bought in bulk at Publix.

Or how about a pound of steamed shrimp from Goatfeathers for $9.99? That serves 3 for lunch at our house.

But please, no chain restaurants on 30A! I get enough of that junk food at home. We live in a small town, and fast food and chain restaurants are our only choices. They say you are what you eat - if I relied on eating out in my town, I'd be junk! LOL.

So, other than Grilled Cheese on the menu, how are they different than most places here at the Beach? You could get a wrap, large lemonade and chips at Rolly Polly which taste better, but you still get the wait, and it will set you back around $11 bucks if you decide to cheap out and not leave a tip for those who work so hard to prepare it for you. Or, you could go to my secret place and get a great sandwich, pay about $12 including tip, and wait only for a brief period before getting served by some of the nicest people. Don't bother asking me more info about my secret lunch spot in south walton, because I don't like to wait any longer than I have to when it is time to eat lunch.

By the way, prices are reasonably priced relative to the rent they have to pay. I guess they could sell the land for people to build homes, then you could wait even longer as you drive 15 minutes to eat in Freeport, if you can find a seat.

I don't think anyone has mentioned this, but Sally's is/was good for a late morning biscuit/Red Bull. Good, cheap and quick! Follow that up by going down to Seaside and asking anyone stepping out of a vehicle with Gator tags if they can spell the word "worcestershire" for 500 bucks. The backup word could be "ambiance".

They paid the stewards to serve the sauce in the dining rooms, which led to passengers requesting to buy a bottle of this new intriguing sauce to take home. Subsequently the fame of Worcestershire Sauce spread very quickly indeed.

    1839
John Duncan, a New York entrepreneur ordered a small quantity of Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce. In the space of a few short years Duncan was importing large shipments to keep up with demand. Lea & Perrins was the only commercially-bottled condiment and the Americans loved it. When importing the sauce became impractical Duncan opened a processing plant, importing the ingredients from England and using the exact English formula.

    1849
Another branch shop opened in Malvern, called Lea & Perrins & Burrows. An office and warehouse was also opened in London.

    1867
    William Henry Perrins died.

    1874
    John Wheeley Lea died.

    1882
15 December, 1.30am. A fire began in the packing room at the Bank Street factory. Fortunately, it was discovered early and extinguished. The damage was later valued at £17.11.6d

    1892
Charles (son of John Wheeley) retired, thereby ending the Lea family's involvement with the sauce company.

    1904
King Edward VII granted the rare Royal Warrant to Lea & Perrins. Lea & Perrins still hold this warrant, the present one having been granted by HRH Queen Elizabeth II.

    1911
The secret ingredient was nearly revealed when one of the new partners died. Thankfully L&P realised that a copy of the recipe might be found and gave instructions to seal the envelope containing the information. The secret has thus remained safe.

    1916
The King of Spain granted The Spanish Royal Warrant to Lea & Perrins

    1930
Lea & Perrins was sold to HP Foods on June 11th.

    1940
Fear of an invasion in Worcester led to a reduction of activity at the Midland Road factory. The bottling plant was moved to the premises of HP Foods at Aston Cross, Birmingham to ensure that production was not endangered by the war.

    1941
Production of Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce continued throughout the war, although on a reduced scale, owing to the shortage of manpower and difficulties in obtaining some of the ingredients. In January bottles had to be distributed with a temporary label as the printers of the sauce labels became a casualty of war.

    1942
The War Department, using emergency powers, took possession of the Midland Road factory. The vaults were occupied by the Royal Army Ordinance Corps as a depot for vehicle and tank parts.

In spite of this a small area of the factory was kept secure for the making of the sauce. According to records 22 men and 22 women worked at Lea & Perrins at this time.

    1943
Official documents reveal that 22 men and 3 women were working at the factory. They also show that 25 people volunteered their services (as night watchmen and similar).

    1945
Throughout the whole war, despite very difficult circumstances, Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce was produced. Every single member of staff who left the factory to be active in the war found their jobs awaiting upon their return. Some ingredients were still very difficult to get hold of but records show that recovery was well on its way.

    1964
A serious and quite spectacular fire broke out in the Midland Road factory at 8.06pm. The official report states that twelve appliances and fifty men were required to fight the fire. It took fourteen jets to quell the blaze. A huge amount of damage was caused, although full production was back underway just ten days later.

    1988
The French multi-national food company BSN (later re-named Danone) purchased HP Foods Ltd.

I'm sorry!!!!! I have unleashed a power greater than I may comprehend. I admit my addiction to Red Bull[available at Costco by the case]. It's just that I have seen the mud-beaches of Ga/SC and feel compelled to comment.
