Harry Potter Opening Night
What I do for my kids....but man was it worth it! I was sucked in for the entire 2 1/2 hours, and didn't want it to end. Wish they would come out with an extended version, because of course they had to leave at least 1/2 the book out. Even so, it was still awesome! Much much funnier (those Weasley twins steal the show), intense and darker. Can't wait for #5!
Now I will sit here and watch my hands and feet swell from the salty popcorn!

Re: Harry Potter Opening Night
Some of my students went to a showing at 12 AM today, got back in town at 4 AM, and made it to my 8:30 AM class. They said it was awesome. My daughter is seeing it in ATL as we speak. She is so excited about seeing it.
I heard that the Superman clip was awesome.

Re: Harry Potter Opening Night
The ad for the new Nikon camera was better than the Superman clip! But there is bad news- another King Kong remake. And Cheaper by the Dozen 2 doesn't look too promising.

Re: Harry Potter Opening Night
I can't stand sci-fi, fantasy, or cartoon/anime stuff. I never saw a Star Wars past "Return of the Jedi". I don't get Tolkien, even though I have really tried on that one- I just don't have the gene for understanding small people with furry feet.
So was I going to like Harry Potter? HA HA HA! No Way!
When Will was little, we read every single night. When he and bdarg started the HP books, I stayed away! Then bdarg was out of town, and I had to fill in. I was hooked. So hooked, that I went back to the 1st book, read it all night, and caught up to the boys in the 2nd book.
Good books draw you in and make you a part of the world you are reading about, and sometimes make you want to be in that world. A good book is a vaction on paper. J.K. Rowling has created such a believable, real place, that sometimes I have difficulty remembering that places like Hogwarts don't exist! And you wish the wizarding world existed- all the magical, wonderful things that have come out of her mind, the incredible characters, and the far-fetched and at the same time , believable story.
In some ways, I'm sorry the movies came out, because not as many people read the books now. And just so you know that I really am an HP freak, every time a new book comes out, I go back and re-read all the Harry Potters starting with the 1st book!
Guess you can't tell I am a HP fan, huh?
But trust me on this one...
Millions of kids around the world became interested in reading for the first time with these books. When the first book came out, there wasn't any one book that throngs of kids would go bonkers over and have to read.

jdarg...I hear you...these books and now the movies are such a phenom! I am sorry that my kids and I missed experiencing this together, although we could all read the books! I loved hearing how you got "hooked" on something else....maybe you can join Kimmi at Betty F.!

Re: Harry Potter Opening Night
Jess, i hear ya. I read a lot--on average, a book a week, and I have tried to read HP, but I just can't get into it. Also thought it would be something fun to do with my kids, read the books together. Tried that, I couldn't get into it enough to stick with it.

We are going to see it today! My 11 year old daughter has read all the books. I've read the first three. What is amazing though is that the movies are almost just like you imagine.

We just got back from the movie. We have a new Rave theater that just opened and we went there. It was really cool. Big comfy seats that lean back a little and the arm that rests go up ( I had 2 kids moving in close during those scary scenes) and lots of leg room and the sound was incredible. We loved the movie. Jdarg, you're right...2 and 1/2 hours and I could have stayed for more. I had no idea we were even near the end since I haven't read this book. I also only saw only a few kids. The theater was filled with mostly adults! Both mine say it was the scariest movie they had ever seen. (they don't watch anything scary and usually only PG or G movies) I'm going to start the book now.

Re: Harry Potter Opening Night
Speaking of fantasy... no one has mentioned the Narnia Chronicles! To us, those are the best of the best. Then, the Lord of the Rings books. We tried the HP books, read a couple, but just couldn't make it thru to the end after the 1st 2. We've said many times, that we just don't get the hype. But LOVED the Lord of the Rings (and the soundtrack), but you have to read the books first to have that feeling of loyalty. Same with Narnia. Those were always our very favorites! Can't wait for the movie!!!

Re: Harry Potter Opening Night
I am living proof that someone who doesn't like and will never read fantasy, science fiction or anything else like that has been totally wowed by the Harry Potter books. I started the first one just to see what all the hoopla was about and I ended up reading 5 in a row. They are so well written and you almost believe it is all real. And I'm all for anything that will get younger kids to read.

Re: Harry Potter Opening Night
I think for many of us, LOTR and Narnia, were read to us as children by our parents. Then, we pass that on to our own children. And the HP books are the newest generation. As an adult, I don't like science fiction reading at all.

Re: Harry Potter Opening Night
My daughter is a Harry Potter fanatic. She says that the new movie is better than the previous times aleph-null. As an experiment, she wants us to watch the first four HP movies, then go see the new one. And re-read all of the books in our "spare" time.
And also she says that we must see Rent - I totally agree. But now that UGA won and GT won, I'm thinking about NOT giving away our tickets on Saturday. Both teams will really be PUMPED!
I mean, how much can you fit into Wednesday through Sunday, and cook a Thanksgiving dinner, too?
I'm not complaining - I love my life, my family, etc. I'm thankful.
Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

Yup! Unfortunately the game is at noon which means we'd have to leave at 4AM beach time. Guess we'll give our tix and parking spot to a friend who might appreciate it. But the beach will be more fun. We can watch the game on TV.

All of them except the newest one. My daughter owns them all, and we watch them while cooking or being lazy. The movies seem to keep getting better. Have seen HP and the Prisoner of Azkaban about 10 times.

Re: Harry Potter Opening Night
It's sort of like seeing the movie The Prince of Tides versus reading the book. The beauty of the words on the page entices your imagination and anticipation at a different level than having it spoon-fed to you on video. No matter how many times you've seen the movie, the words are better.

You are correct, sir!!! Interesting that you picked "The Prince of Tides"...one of my all time favorite reads. The movie so disappointed me....especially Barbra S...all I can remember are her fingernails!

Re: Harry Potter Opening Night
The English Patient is one exception to my rule of preferring the book to the movie. The Lord of the Rings books are another; Tolkien went off on too many tangents.
I feel so out of it. I am home sick with the flu, it is raining buckets outside, and there was no opening night of Harry Potter here in Port St Joe.
My fourth grade teacher read the Narnia books to us, and my younger son's fourth grade teacher read the Potter books to them well before they became all the rage.
I know there is sort of a backlash against the Potter hype but I like the books; I do think they have encouraged children to read and explore other authors.
I can well understand how some would feel that putting these magical stories on film might well take some of the magic away. The Narnia books were so well written that they will always stand by themselves. Rowlings' creation, if not quite as stylish, is also memorable--seeing Harry fly astride Buckbeak was just plain awesome and more than justified making the movie.
All I can say is thank goodness for Netflix and DeepDiscountDVD.
