Organ Concert Nov. 16 at 3 p.m. at 1st UMC, DeFuniak by Nationally Acclaimed Virtuoso

Nationally acclaimed organ virtuoso Aram Basmadjian will perform at First United Methodist Church in De Funiak Springs on Sunday, November 16, 2008 at 3 p.m. First UMC in De Funiak has one of the finest organs in Northwest Florida. To hear it played by a virtuoso will be exceptional. Donations will be accepted at the concert. The church is located on Circle Drive surrounding Lake De Funiak. It will be well worth the drive up from SoWal to NoWal. Park in lot next to church or around lake. Drive time about 40 minutes.

I bet this will be marvelous. Organ can be so much more than what most think of as "just funeral music."

Our 1st UMC organist is well known in the Chicago area (one of the best things about our church!) and every Halloween Sunday she plays Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor and for 7 or 8 minutes it rocks the rafters! It sends chills up and down your spine. We have people from all over visit our church just for that.

I feel sure that Aram Basmadjian will have this piece in his repertoire. Very worthwhile attending if just for this alone! And probably Saint Saens Organ Symphony.

I'll be driving up for the concert. Let me know if you'd like a ride. I might even throw in a free history lesson on the way up.

They haven't done much publicity for what will be a truly great organ concert at 3 p.m. The Chautauqua Hall of Brotherhood Foundation will be hosting a movie "The Indian In the Cupboard" across the street in the Chautauqua Building on Circle Drive at 2 p.m. Did I mention both are FREE. Donation at concert accepted and food available for purchase at movie. Good time for a day trip to DeFuniak Springs. It will be a little windy and cold, but someone in your party that isn't interested in a concert or movie could pick up a quick game of golf at the DeFuniak Springs Country Club -- a great bargain and interesting course.

Johnrudy, You would have LOVED the concert. It was almost beyond worldly. Aram Basmadjian is not only one of the most gifted young organ virtuosos in America, he is a great entertainer. There was a very larger crowd at the First United Methodist Church in DeFuniak Springs. His Bach selection included the Trio Sonata VI in G major, Adagio Cantabile and Toccats, Adagio & Fugue in C Major. He opened with Concerto in F major, Op. 4, No. 4 by Handel.

    no doubt it was glorious!

When we go to church, I purposely se\it on the organ side and close to the front so I can get the full effect. Love to watch her feet fly across the bottom pedals. Those pedals are like another keyboard. I don't know how these organists do it. I will see our organist tomorrow and ask if she knows of Aram B.

Thanks to DuneLaker for posting this. We went and enjoyed every minute.

Thanks to First UMC and Dollarhide's Music (in Pensacola) and the Allen Organ Co. for making this happen. Here's hoping First UMC will be able to extend this event into a series.
