    New Hurricane evacuation route

New hurricane evacuation route links Florida Panhandle through Flomaton to
    I-65

MOBILE -- Officials have high expectations for a long-awaited hurricane evacuation route that links the Florida Panhandle with Interstate 65 in Alabama through Flomaton.

State and local officials will hold a ceremony Wednesday morning opening the Alabama 113 four-lane connection. U.S. 29 is already four lanes from Pensacola, Fla., to Flomaton.

Escambia County, Fla., provided $4 million toward the cost of four-laning the stretch of Alabama 113 from Flomaton northward to I-65. Bondurant said the city of Flomaton provided $500,000 and another $500,000 came from Escambia County, Ala. Alabama used federal funds for its $23 million share.

Escambia County (Ala.) Commission Chairman David Stokes said he hopes the Alabama-Florida partnership on expanding evacuation routes will continue with at least two more four-laning projects into the Panhandle from his county.

"The emergency relief aspect of this is immeasurable," Stokes said.

Sorry, that is the best map I could find. Look for the little RED dot, Century is below it and Flomaton is to the West of the red dot. I live in Alabama and had no idea where these towns were.

Oh well! Thanks for the info!

I wonder how to pronounce "Flomaton". Sounds like a dishwasher or some other water related appliance.

I think it's Flo-mah-ton when the channel 3 news crew reports about it.

Great news about the new storm evacuation route opening. Read the story in our Northwest Florida Daily newspaper on page C2, 11-12-08. I wonder how you pronounce the Mayor of Flomaton's last name and what other tales he has to tell. There was a Bondurant captured by pirates outside of Ocean Springs around 1816 that was connected to well known Florida families active in early land grants. Sounds like the new hurricane route goes through quite a bit of farm land owned by "a couple of prominent families and money won't buy it." Too bad we don't get the Pensacola TV news channels here in SoWal anymore. I'd rather get that than Dothan.

This is awesome, not so much for us, but Pensacola / Navarre seems to be hurricane alley and this is a long time coming.

I think I have some ancestors buried in Brewton...might have to go check it out, when football season and Christmas is over.
