Thread: What kinds of professional jobs

  1. What kinds of professional jobs

are available in SoWal? None I suppose? Just thinking that now is the ideal time to think about moving our young family down, but can't figure out what I'd do for a living. I'm an attorney/investment banker , and my wife could go back to work as a corporate accountant. We're looking for change though, so maybe a different kind of career too.

...foreclosure and bankruptcy law springs to mind.

But hey...Top Ramen tastes a whole lot better when you eat it off of a Granite Countertop. (Mr & Mrs Too Much Homebuyer)

There are quite a few investment bank branches down here for all the retirees. I wouldn't assume there's no market here for that. Morgan Stanley has a new office right along 98 between Destin Commons and Sandestin.

You're probably not going to find something on 30A, but Destin, PCB, and PC would probably have something. Have you done a job search?

I don't know if any of these will do you any good, but they might be worth a try. Times are difficult for job hunters down here just now. Good luck with your search.

There are accounting jobs in FWB and PCB that pop up from time to time, but the pay range would probably make your wife weep.

Don't suppose either of you have an active security clearance? That opens up a good number of relatively high paying for the area opportunities around the bases.

  9. No, don't have that, either of us. How do you acquire secret clearance? Do most of those kinds of defense jobs pre-require that, or run you through a series of clearance checks as part of the process?

Someone sent me the best suggestion so far, which was simply to find a work from anywhere sales job, where the company was indifferent as to your actual base within the southeast.

Going back to being a lawyer doesn't appeal to me right now, I'm far too young for that. In my mind, real lawyers are either bald or have completely grey hair, and are contemporaries with the judge. I'm not there yet.

Most people I know with clearance got it when they were either in the Air Force or working a civil service job. If you're looking into a contracting situation without one, the company has to really really like you because it's going to cost them something like $25-$50K to get you one.

So if someone's already got one, it opens up a lot of job options in these parts because it's one big expense they don't have for a new hire.

Save your pretty. Life's too short to surround yourself with jackasses. Or to lose sleep at night for the horrible way you make a living.
