What is burning near Grayton?
Just came off the beach at WC and something is on fire over Grayton way. I can't believe it would be a controlled burn, but hope it is.
Which community along 30A shall we pillage this evening?....gttbm

Initially, we thought it was a neighbor of ours .... we call him 'burning man'. However, we have been in touch with the Fire Department and they said it is a controlled burn in Defuniak. Just can't understand why they would make the decision to burn on a beautiful holiday week with tourists and homeowners in town.
Miss Smoothie and I had big plans to enjoy the sun today but just can't take the smoke!

The windows for good burning weather in a year can be pretty small. They had a big burn on Eglin over by Hurlburt yesterday.

Cough, it's pretty thick, cough, gotta run to Tom Thumb for, cough, last pack of cigarettes, cough.

Smoky SoWal
Press release from SWFDConditions caused by control burn at Eglin AFB
(Santa Rosa Beach) December 31, 2008 – Jackson Guard Fire Crews are conducting two prescribed burns today, located east of Test Area C-62, approximately 6 miles west southwest of Defuniak Springs. The second prescribed burn is located on the north side of Bob Sikes Highway approximately 8 miles west of Defuniak Springs and 2 ½ miles south of I-10. The burns will take place between 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., said James H. Furman, Wildland Fire Program Manager, 96 CEG/CEVSNP Jackson Guard Eglin AFB 850-882-8399
Due to the prevailing wind direction and atmospheric conditions, smoke is drifting far from these locations. Areas of South Walton are experiencing patches of dense smoke. The South Walton Fire District is monitoring the conditions and is encouraging residents and guests with respiratory conditions to remain inside while smoke is in the area. If you encounter smoke on any roads, please slow down and use caution.
It is anticipated that the smoke will dissipate once the burns have been completed
For more information, please contact Deputy Chief Sean Hughes at Station 3/Headquarters, 850-267-1298.Last edited by Walton Outdoors; 12-31-2008 at 02:23 PM.

Narrow window to burn or not, New Year's Eve is not the time to burn. Extra smokey roads and highways tonight would put many in needless danger.

Smoky roads certainly add even more danger to the problem.

My guess is that she is already par-taying.
It's smoky (and it was very smoky on 98 today). A smokey is a highway patrolman/person, as in, "Hey, smokey at mile marker 70. Double nickels." "10-4. What's your handle?" "Mama Cocoa. The KPR the 4 and the 33." "I think we got ourselves a convoy." "There goes my front door."

...we've got ourselves a convoy here!
Thanks for the responses to my question...sowal.com is the place for the latest info! I agree with the posters that commented what a truly bad and idiotic decision it was to ruin a perfectly beautiful day in sowal with a controlled burn. WC is chock full of visitors and smelling and seeing all that smoke was a bummer.
On another note...I had the great fortune of meeting Dunelaker yesterday!

From the south side of the bay, it looked like everything on the other side was on fire! I figured it was a control burn, good and windy. I assume they love a challenge! I personally don't care for control burns, where do all the little animals go?
