    Local Bakeries

We will be visiting Seagrove Beach next week and I am looking for local bakeries anyone would recommend. I know that Publix has a bakery but I'm looking for a more local business.

    Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I love the baguettes at Modica in Seaside. We also like the breakfast pastries.

    Re: Local Bakeries

I don't know of any bakeries operating in SoWal anymore. The bakery, Grayton Oasis, which closed its doors a while back, serviced many of the local restaurants in SoWal. There was another baker in Freeport, where Cash's Lounge and Liquor Store is located currently, who also did much baking for local restaurants, but they closed shop when the widening of the road was announced. I think they were going to move elsewhere and retire, and that was just the right time. Maybe some restaurant folks can chime in with their bakery secrets.

    Thanks for your replies.

We are looking for various breakfast items and pastries such as muffins, eclairs, danishes, basically anything cream filled, etc.

Then look no further than the Donut Hole, located on Hwy 98 about 1 mile west of 30-A. Take cash, because they don't take plastic.

Publix is obviously big business, but don't discount our local Publix. The Publix at Watercolor, and its manager, do a LOT to support the local area and local causes. They have become an integral part of the community. And their bakery items are pretty good and almost the only game in town!

Thanks Joe, we'll have to stop by the Donut Hole on the way into town Monday.

Our local Publix here in GA has a nice bakery but it's hard to beat the Mom and Pop bakeries for unique items and that fresh bakery smell.

It's not exactly local to 30a, but Panera's at Destin Commons has some great breads and yummy gooey bakery treats.

for pastries, I'd also try some of the coffee shops in the area such as Fonville Press (Seacrest), Cava Java (Seagrove), Starbucks (Grayton), and Another Broken Egg Cafe (Grayton). There's also a place in the Village of South Walton that also sells Carvel ice cream and cakes/sweets, but I don't know the name and I don't know if it sells breakfast pastries. For bread, I've had the baquette from Modica Market and it is great. They also sell pastries.

The Donut Hole serves a really good southern-style breakfast, too. We have had them bake birthday cakes, namely a tall coconut cake that was delicious and very reasonably priced. I like WaterColor Market for pastries and cookies, as well as Modica Market. The bread selection at Publix is not impressive, but they do nice cakes. We ordered red velvet cakes there twice and they were quite good. Publix has superb fried chicken and banana pudding, too! Time to head for the gym.

Modica Market and Watercolor Market - delicious sausage and biscuits, and great cream cheese/spinach croissants for breakfast!!! you can get a latte at either of these places as well! nice places to just "be" in the morning.

Hibiscus Coffee and Guesthouse, Grayton Beach. They have a nice breakfast menu with quiche, frittata, muffins, pancakes, waffles, etc, in a very comfy/nice setting.

Hibiscus is the last stop on the way home for me- I grab a coffee and pastry to eat in the car- it keeps me from sobbing all the way to Florala!
