Chautauqua Winter Assembly February 19 - March 1
MARK YOUR CALENDARS and we will see you in DeFuniak Springs in just ten days! The 2009 Chautauqua Winter Assembly begins with a Mardi Gras Gala on Thursday night, February 19 and ends ten days later on March 1. This year's diverse programming will include a weekend with Southern authors, a stellar art show, inspiring sessions with ESPN's Buck Showalter, Sister Shubert, photographer Jim Moran and many more. Take an up close look at some of the most important documentaries of the past 70 years in the "The Power of Film" series, with screenings at the Chautauqua Hall of Brotherhood Monday through Thursday evenings. Meet acclaimed author and comedian Brad Tassel in workshops for parents and kids about how to deal with bullies and bullying. And learn about "biotecture" and Walton County's own hands-on Earthship project.
All of this plus visits from Benjamin Franklin, Harriet Beecher Stowe and Chautauqua favorite Louisa May Alcott as David Bludworth and Jan Turnquist share their talents as historical re-enactors. Enjoy another Chautauqua favorite with Miss Ellen's elegant Grande Tea Serenade. Sprint to the finish in the Women's Club 5K run or energize with morning yoga at the Hall of Brotherhood. A tantalizing breakfast at St. Agatha's or a brown bag lunch at the Chautauqua Bistro make dining a pleasure before and between sessions. 2009 Assembly Theme: "Getting There From Here"
The Florida Chautauqua Winter Assembly in the Land of Summer is bringing to DeFuniak Springs a program of Afternoons with Southern Authors… great music with pianist David Crohan… laughter with the Blast from the Past and Barney Fife… more classic movies… an Art Show… An Evening with the Beatles… and much more.
Since 1874, Chautauqua has embraced change with open-minded courage and open-hearted compassion. In 2008, the Assembly used the question “Where are we now?” to explore our current challenges. This year, we will expand on that theme and discover ways of "Getting there from here". This will involve practical discussions, inspiring examples and hopeful possibilities, exploring what is and what could be.

Actually, the events are continuing all week! Each night at 7:00pm at the Chautauqua Hall of Brotherhood, "The Power of Film" will examine a seminal documentary with lecture, viewing and discussion. Last night Walton County librarian Dan Owens gave us insight into D.W. Griffith's chilling "Birth of a Nation." Tonight it's "Olympia," the Leni Riefenstahl masterwork presented by photographer and artist John Murphy. Documentary film producer Alex Alexander presents "Grey Gardens" on Wednesday and writer Carol Puckett presents Michael Moore's first,"Roger and Me," on Thursday. Friday is family night with a free screening of "Wizard of Oz", complete with song sheets for a sing-along!
Friday and Saturday programs begin with yoga at the Hall of Brotherhood at 7:30 (never any charge), breakfast cooked to order at St. Agatha's on the Circle (worth the trip any day!) and lectures and workshops all day.
Saturday morning the Women's Club of DeFuniak Springs will host their second annual 5K run. It's a perfectly lovely course through the historic district and around the lake.
Sunday's events begin with afternoon porch parties on the Circle, a 4:00pm concert and march around the lake by the Panama City Pipes (a phenomenal pipe and drum corps in the truest Scottish tradition)and the South Walton Ecumenical Choir in concert for the closing ceremonies at 5:00.

Will he be skipping over the part that Involves Rep. Sansom, Jay Odom, and himself? Does this time possibly coincide with grand jury testimony?

Schedule was changed. So, if you missed this Friday, you still have a chance to catch Richburg's talk on Saturday. So many Okaloosa County citizens and topics he could discuss as he traces Northwest Florida's history.

Victorian Tea, Harriet Beecher Stowe
Did go to the Victorian Tea. What a delightful experience Ellen Mayfield and her ladies and gentlemen have prepared. The costumes are fabulous, too. Looking forward to seeing Jan Turnquest portray Harriet Beecher Stowe this afternoon at 3:15 at DeFuniak Springs Methodist Church. Come by the Walton County Heritage Museum as it is open from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. today if you are out and about today. Hope the weather holds.
