Eastern Lake Open, Waves, Wind and Rain 2-28-09

Eastern Lake is open today, Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009. It has been very close the last several days. Unsure whether it opened up on its own last night with the high surf, or if someone's foot wedge helped it. At least it wasn't dug out by a backhoe. The weather is windy here today but still quite pleasant for a walk down to the beach to see this unique SoWal activity. Walked down to Deer Lake State Park outfall and it was open on Thursday. The storm hitting our friends up around Montgomery, Alabama, Southern and Central Georgia, looks like it has a while before it might drop down to SoWal, 8:38 a.m. CST. Grab your cup of coffee and head down to the beach. Keep an eye to the sky, however, for rain and storms.

It is always a treat to see nature doing its thing. I got some good pics of Western Lake opening last week. Love the blending of the brown, tannic Lake water washing into the clear Emerald Green Gulf. I may have forgot to upload those pics, but check the photos in the next couple of days, and I will post a few.

Eastern Lake 27 Feb 2009 (prior to Lake opening) -- Hazy, but a warm 68F degrees. Yum!

Eastern Lake - 28 Feb 2008 (after Lake opened) -- notice the 2-3 ft cut through the sand at the outflow.

Thank you dunelaker. Got up this morning saw that the level had dropped and got depressed thinking the screaming idiots had prevailed and got it dug out as a pre emptive move before the rain got here. So glad this was natural.

On the other side too, the tight lipped fiscal conservatives should be very happy. I can't imagine what a back hoe and at least 5 county workers would cost as over time on a Saturday.

We went and checked it out this morning. The south wind was so strong there was actually near equilibrium of water leaving and being pushed in. The birds were diving en masse where the lake narrows at the outflow-I guess the outward bound fish were hung up there.

Glad everyone enjoyed the day. Can't wait to go down tomorrow and see how the outfall is changing. I think high tide is around noon. May have to walk down and check on Deer Lake, also. I'll punch the automatic counter to be sure my visit is noted. I was out of SoWal most of the day. Did we get much rain?
