I have purchased many handknotted rugs, four of them room size, from ebay seller pakobelrugs. I LOVE my rugs and they were cheap! Three were older rugs and one is new -- I actually like the new one the least. My crown jewel is a 144kpsi, 14x9 vegetable dyed rug that was about $750. It was probably 20 years old when I bought it. But I don't care! It is so beautiful and lights up my living room. My second favorite is the most worn -- it's in the kids playroom and it is a colorful Caucasian rug that's faded on one side ... but I don't care. You could pay the same amount for a big seagrass rug that has absolutely no character.

Those are wool rugs though and handknotted. If you want super super cheap check out the home decorators' collection online outlet. You can get hand tufted wool rugs and synthetic rugs for very little money. Oh, and overstock.com! Online is really the way to go.

smarmy? Oh, the stories I could tell about my rug buying days.

TFT...I looked swarmy up. (I did not mean swami) I think it is one of my made up words...means shifty to me. You know....the ones that have a price on the rug and give you an incredible deal (roll eyes here) that is like 75% off.

  8. Olde Time Pottery over in Destin by the old movie theater has some dirt cheap rugs. Not so nice, as they are the cheap polyester and nylon and not soft wool. But, if you are looking for something to cover a space and be a dirt (sand) catcher, they have what you need!

My interior designer says I need to get rid of mine to make the house look less dated.Wha-what? They are too expensive to toss. However, I might put the ones in the kitchen in the attic and buy something more contemporary as a peace offering to her. ARGH!

My husband is in the carpet industry. He can get both wool and synthetic for incredibly great prices (sorry that he can't pass that along to you, WhoDat1). We had decided that we'd go wool. Wool is gorgeous. But wool creates fuzz bunnies and is not as soft as synthetics for naps on the floor while watching TV. So we've decided it's a no for wool. Sounds crazy, I know, because we can get some gorgeous wool rugs and carpet at amazing prices.

Also a drive to the Dalton, GA, area might be worth your time.
