Setting Up Personal Beach Chairs and Umbrellas

We visit the area often and have our own beach chairs and an umbrella. During peak season, a lot of people obviously spend their days on the beach (such as July 2 - 12, when we will be in town). The various beach chair rental companies set up their chairs and umbrellas in our area usually by 7:00 AM.

I usually try to set our chairs and umbrella up around the time or just before they do; otherwise we may not be able to be near or see the surf if all of the rental chairs and ubrellas are set up. I am not complaining about them being there, just acknowledging that they are there and tend to set up early. It is not a problem for me to go set up early; it's usually about the time I get back from a run or a bike ride; calm weather permitting, I may set them up but then go back in (but in view of the chairs) for a while longer until the 3 year old wakes up, or sit in the chairs and read a book. We take our trash up during the day, and take our chairs in at the end of the day.

I realize the rental chairs are convenient and don't usually risk the issue of being left overnight, but we stay in a relative's condo and have our chairs and umbrella on sight. We don't really like the rental chairs' design, we sometimes like to stay on the beach through sunset, after the rental chairs are taken down, and don't see it as practical to pay $60.00 - $80.00 per week for them when we have our own.

My question is: what time is it acceptable for me to set up our 2 adult chairs, 1 toddler chair, and umbrella in the mornings? I'm not in favor of leaving items on the beach overnight, but I don't want to get in trouble for setting up my chairs early if it offends somebody or causes some type of catastrophe, conflict, or controversy.

We visit every year as well, and we usually have our umbrellas, chairs, and canopy set up by 7:00 am. We are responsible visitors and bring all in at night, plus extra trash that we collect on the beach during the day. It is not so much what time you set them up in the morning, it just that they should all be taken back to condo/house at night.

I hope you have a wonderful vacation!!!!

I'll need to look at the signs at the beach. I believe there is wording about the first 1/2 hour after sunrise being ok. Sounds like you are fine.

You can always call code enforcement at 622-000, but if you set up no earlier than 7 you should be ok.

I would say anytime after sunrise would be alright in most areas. I don't know where you are but here on Blue Mountain Beach, the rental agencies have taken over. If you can beat them and aren't on "private property", good! Adagio had over 40 chairs and umbrellas set up this morning. I think that is over the top and unnecessary. They could set up 10 to 20 and add more as is necessary. The beach usage around here is getting rediculous and while I have always been for public use of the beach without restriction, I must admit, I'm beginning to wonder.

As long as you are taking them off the beach at night and actively using them while they're on the beach, you shouldn't have any problems. It is the overnight debris/hazards and vacant chairs/tents set up all day w/o anyone nearby that raise folks' ire.

Hope you have a great trip and find a primo location each day!

Thanks everyone. Andy A., I do sometimes see what you are saying in regard to the rental agencies taking over. We stay at a beachfront condo near Eastern Lake; there are about 3 agencies rent the chairs in the area. They vendors are mostly familiar with me since I'm usually out there setting up when they are and I stay out there all day. They've always been nice to me, but in some of the contracted beach areas, I could see where it could get territorial.
