Re: Dog Owners Be Aware
Thanks for the info! As I've said on another thread, we always give our dog a Greenie to keep her content when I've cooked a nice meal that took a lot of prep time and we don't want to be interrupted while dining. Guess we'll have to find another way to entertain her.
BTW we have a doggie toothbrush that we got from the vet for cleaning her teeth, so she doesn't need Greenies for that purpose.

Re: Dog Owners Be Aware
Your welcome BR. Mine have never liked the Greenies. I tried a couple times, but they wanted nothing to do with it.

Re: Dog Owners Be Aware
Thank you very much for sharing this, Kathydwells. How sad!
I have never used greenies or much of any other kind of treat with my dogs once they were past puppyhood. With dogs like ours, they don't just chew, they engulf, and things that are too small become worriesome because they swallow them.
We have had good luck with Galileo bones and some of the larger prepared bones and rope toys.
And carrots. They like carrots, and carrots seem to break down just fine.

Re: Dog Owners Be Aware
Carrots, I have never tried that. My two get the little flavor snacks and they love them. I give them rawhide chewies only when I will be in the room with them, because I am afraid they will choke on them. Thanks for the carrot advice, I will have to try that!!!!

Our dog loves carrots! I think the texture gets to her -- she ends up doing this little nibble thing that cracks us up!

Re: Dog Owners Be Aware
I bought a Greenie about a month ago...after the braces came off. Molly ate that thing in about 15 minutes and I decided not to buy any more.

Re: Dog Owners Be Aware
My 2 dogs won't touch those Greenies. They love carrots, strawberry chunks, and most veggies. I give them the spine part of romaine lettuce when I'm making salads. They think they've gone to heaven.

Re: Dog Owners Be Aware
If you have a dog that inhales rather than gnaws, greenies, rawhides, or anything other than plain old dog biscuits are probably not a good idea! And many people give them to their dogs daily, which can cause stomach upset as well. Mine love them, but I buy the biggest ones, and they will "worry" at them for awhile. Now I will be sure to watch very closely and maybe take the greenies away when then gnaw it down to a size small enough to swallow!
Even with the greenies, most dogs' teeth will still need to be cleaned in some way. Using a toothbrush is hard- a better way is to get some of those thin baby washcloths, wet one, put it around your finger, and use your finger for the brush. You can really clean those back teeth, especially on the outside, where teeth get the nastiest. It won't remove the hard tartar and plaque that is already there- the vet will have to do that. And the dogs seem to mind it less than a toothbrush.

Re: Dog Owners Be Aware
this is sad! what about a real steak bone, or a toy to chew on? I give my big girl a steak bone now and then, and she loves her stuffed toys that she gnaws on but never tears up, and a big chew bone now and then (the rawhide stuff that may not be good for some).
I adore all of your dog avatars and plan to copy you and take a picture of Lulu for my 'tar!

I wish I had dogs that would carry around "babies' (stuffed animals and such)- I think it is so cute when I see dogs doing that

Re: Dog Owners Be Aware
Molly ate two leather tassels off Mr. Kitty's shoe yesterday! I have told him over and over again to not leave shoes on the floor....should have listened! I have been worried that this shall not PASS! They were about 1 1/2 long. She is eating fine and had poo poo this morning...but, no tassels yet. Should I worry?

Not yet. But I bet your neighbors are wondering why you are out in your yard looking so carefully at doogie poop!

Re: Dog Owners Be Aware
If the topic of the day is dog poop, Miss Kitty, well I have a doozy for you. And I do not want to start a new thread to tell this one. This morning, I was driving along Hwy 98 talking to Allifunn on the cell. Well, my 90 lb Lulu (lab)was riding in the back, but she suddenly started trying to get in the front - but can't quite fit. I didn't know why she was doing that. She goes back to the back and I see in my rearview mirror what she is doing, but then I smell it at the same time. Uncontrolled diahhrea right in the car!!!!!!!
!!!!!!! I hung up on Alli and pulled over as fast as I could. Thankfully she did it on the dog blanket I keep on her spot in the car. I let her out and she went several more times before I could let her back in. Bless her heart - she really did not want to do that but it couldn't be helped. and she tried telling me the best she could.
She had this stomach problem a few days ago, and I don't know of anything she's eaten that would have caused it, unless she got into something rotten outside.
I thought about calling the vet. anyone have any good suggestions for dog stomach problems?

Re: Dog Owners Be Aware
Our dog had this problem right before we took him down to the beach for the first time at Christmas. It occurred in the middle of the night, right on top of our new white/white down comforter
Poor guy, he had this miserable look on his face. Afterwards, he had frequent unfirm stools, a first and not good for making a good first impression with the family! Not to mention, "What if it kicks in on the plane?!?" as the commercials say. After a couple of days of this down in FL, we decided it was not food related and took him to the vet. They gave us a med called Metronidazole (250 Mg) and that cleared the problem up immediately. We took Butter to Dr. Jami Swift at the Barry Vet Hospital in Destin (850)837-7072. We were very impressed with them. Have had no further problems, so our local vet said it was probably some intestinal bacterial thing, which requires meds to resolve. Good luck. No one is happy with a Hershey's pup, especially the pup.

Re: Dog Owners Be Aware
Tootsie, I would be careful with steak bones also. I used to give one my dog's that I had a few years ago, bones also (steak, porkchop) and one day I saw him out in the yard going poo. I heard him cry out and went to look at him. I noticed blood coming from his behind. I immediately took him to the vet. The vet told me that part of a steak bone that he had eaten the night before caused a tear in his rectum. He had to stitch it up. It was very painful for my little guy. He was terrified of pooing for a long time after that. That could just see the look in his eyes. The vet said never, ever give a dog bones from the table not matter what kind they were. I never gave another dog a bone again. Just tought you might want to know this.

Re: Dog Owners Be Aware
thanks Kathy. I've never heard this before, but it does make sense! Believe it or not, Lulu will take a steak bone and gnaw on it for weeks but never quite eats it, unless she is eating just the outside or something. I know chicken and pork bones are a no-no for sure, but will be careful in the future of all bones!!!

well, she had another episode in the house today - she could not make it to the door to even ask to go out.
I took her to the vet. Her prescribed medication and plan of action:
antibiotics
deworming meds (in case of infestation)
yogurt (active culture) a few times a day
diet of homemade white rice and chicken, maybe a touch of garlic, for several days.
also, she has an ear infection, due to allergy and there are other meds for that, including daily benadryl on an ongoing basis (the infection was pretty severe).
we just got finished force feeding about 8 pills... she's a good girl... but can't get her to eat the yogurt - now what?
I know she'll go crazy over the rice and chicken.
thanks Jen-ay for your earlier PM - it made me realize that she has had this stomach problem long enough to see the vet. and lullabelle would never complain about a thing. all she ever does is wag her tail and beg for food or a ball or a scratch, so its easy to overlook something that needs attention.

Re: Dog Owners Be Aware
Tootsie: Go to the health food store - you can find acidophilous in capsule form and sprinkle it on her chicken and rice. That is the same stuff that is in yogurt. On another note, I can't believe they would give your sweetie deworming medicine when she has a stomach complaint! Yikes. Hope she's better.

Re: Dog Owners Be Aware
Tootsie, I hope your little girl is soon well. You could try to mix the yogurt in with the chicken and rice. She might eat it that way!!! Good Luck!!!
