Camp Timpoochee on the Bay, June 6-10
In Walton County, kids can go to 4-H summer camp at Camp Timpoochee on the Choctawhatchee Bay, June 6- 10.
Camp is open to ages 8 – 12. Counselors must be 14 or older, junior counselors can be 13.
"Children do not have to be 4-H (to attend camp,)" Suzanne Wilson, Walton County Extension, 4H Youth Development said.
The Monday through Friday residential camp offers kids the opportunity to play volleyball, canoe, archery, snorkeling and other quintessential camping activities, like singing camp songs and camp fires. 4-H camp also includes hands-on marine biology lab.
Financial assistance is also available. "It is really for all income levels," Wilson said. "We try to help people with multiple children."
The co-ed camp is fully staffed, but still need teens to volunteer as camp counselors.
"It is boys on one side and girls on the other," Wilson said. "There is plenty of adult supervision."
While counselors aren’t paid, they get 40 hours of "community service" that can be used towards a Bright Futures Scholarship.
"It was a lot of fun," Rebecca Cuchens, 16, who was a counselor two years ago, said.
She had eight 10 - 12 year-olds in her cabin.
"It was educational. Staff was really great," Cuchens said.
"If you like working with kids, this is a great way to service points," Wilson said.
If your child can’t make it for a week, there is also day camp in the summer.
Through June, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 4-H also offers day camp at Eden State Gardens from 8 a.m. to noon.
"That’s not just for local kids, it is for visitors too," Wilson said.

Re: Camp Timpoochee on the Bay, June 6-10
Oh, my... I haven't heard anything about Camp Timpoochee in years. My brothers and I went there several summers when we were children and I have such fond memories of that place, the powdered eggs notwithstanding. I particularly remember one summer when Pat Boone's "Speedy Gonzales" was the #1 hit song and Sprite was a new invention!
Although we've been in California for many years now, we have a home at Grayton Beach, where we spend several weeks each year, and I would love to visit the Camp during one of those visits. Is it possible to do this in October or December? My husband would get such a kick out of it, because I have told him so many funny stories about Camp Timpoochee days. Also, I would also like to know if there are programs where one can donate money to cover camp stays for children who would not otherwise be able to attend. If so, we would really like to put this on our list of charitable donations for this year. Thanks for feedback, anyone.
