Storm may bring gale-force winds and heavy rain
Approaching storm could be worse than Ida, forecasters say | storm, coast, winds - News - Northwest Florida Daily News
View a radar image of the Southeast from Intellicast. »A powerful winter storm will blast across Northwest Florida on Tuesday night and Wednesday bringing torrential rains, gale-force winds and storm surges comparable to a tropical storm.
Weather forecasters expect the cyclone, which is taking shape off the Texas coast, to produce rainfall totals as high as 8 inches in some parts of the Panhandle. Winds along the coast could gust to 40 mph, and a 5-foot storm tidal surge in the Pensacola area is possible....

Wow, those surf and surge reports are looking impressive. At least the beach is picked up near us. Wonder if TDC will be pulling in the trash cans this afternoon? Some red warnings and watches have popped up a few times on various stations. Guess we'll just have to see how it comes in. I hope we don't get over 40mps winds and worry about the bridges being closed. Regardless, tonight and tomorrow morning would not be a good time to be hauling loosely bundled items across the 331 bridge, imo. I've been on the bridge in moderate winds before and had to dodge debris, hay bales, etc. blown off and creating a hazard in middle of road.

Wonder if AT&T will use this as another delay tactic for our 3G in the area?

Just saw two TDC trucks go by and pick up trash bags off the beach at Eastern Lake access. Our wind is still from the north.

My son said there was talk at the high school about them closing the schools tomorrow due to the weather, has anyone heard anything or know where to look for this info online?
-
-
-
Yes, there is a place to find the info- the Walton County School District website. They post cancellation info as soon as it happens.
Walton County Schools
However, you will probably hear it first on SoWal, because most people don't hang out and look at the WCSD website. That goes for most other local news as well- SoWal. com breaks it before anyone, hands down.
And there is no indication from the WCSD website that school will be closed tomorrow.

Thanks. I still want to keep up with it since my sons teacher agreed that she had heard the schools might be closed as well and yes, I know about the news on the SoWal forum, I have been here on the forum 3 years and have lived in this area for almost 30.
I just hate how hard it is to find news for South Walton anywhere else and am always trying to see if anyone has any better links than I do.Last edited by NightAngel; 12-01-2009 at 04:50 PM.

WMBB usually does a good job as do most sources, they can't release news they have not received yet.
If the county or the school has not announced anything, they can't report. I just left the office and we were just finishing up printing the Beach Breeze and I have not received any press from anyone on this except for this from the WCSO:
The National Weather Service in Tallahssee has issued a flood watch for Shoal River near Mossy Head. A strong wet gulf system will bring heavy rain fall across the panahndle in the next 24 to 48 hours. This watch is in effect until Thursday afternoon. (3 hours ago)
And this from 4 hours ago.
SEVERE WEATHER ALERT: Expect tonight to bring strong to severe storms south of I-10 in Walton County with gale conditions over coastal waters w/ 10-14 foot seas off shore, and tide 3-4 feet above normal high tide.
The WCSO has been doing a good job on their web site and their FB page.
WMBB has a vol. evac on Franklin County.

There was a tornado warning in Bay County, I think around Bay Point - Lynn Haven, but believe it has now been canceled. Heads up though. It is raining quite hard here (South Walton, Walton County, Florida - about 9 miles from Bay County border) around 6:46 a.m. Let up a bit around 6 a.m. for a few minutes. Very timely in letting little dog out. He has learned though to look for the sheltered spots around porch overhangs. Waves are huge. Last night they still seemed okay, but are kicking this morning. Lake also came up some. It was still open from its forced opening last week -- uggghh. As surge and water comes in, the lake will rise and come up in some yards. Nothing to be done about that. If the lake had been left alone, the water might not be coming into lake yet. Hopefully, Mother Nature will start fixing it back to how she likes it today.

The WCSO just posted this on FB:
A tornado watch is in effect for the Florida panhandle ( Walton County). The watch will remain in effect until 11:00 AM today. REMEMBER...A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening ...weather condtitions and listen for later statements and possible warnings.
AND THIS:
There are currently no closings in Walton County. All schools and county office will be open today.Last edited by Alicia Leonard; 12-02-2009 at 08:09 AM.

I have a question -
Why do you guys constantly badger Jesus and Christianity if you don't even believe in him? If it's a fairy tale to you, why does it make you so angry?
Isn't there an atheist website you could hang out at?
Live and let live.

We've had tornado warnings to our east in Bay County and now Port St. Joe over in Gulf County. Eglin Air Force Base to our west over in Okaloosa County also had tornado warning. Right now at 8:17 a.m. CST the wind and waves just picked up quite a bit. White caps on the lake. Wind blowing hard from south. Would expect quite a bit of surf being pushed up and in. Even though The Weather Channel guy, Morrow, is standing around in calmer weather for the moment over in Destin, here in South Walton it is the worst it has been all morning.
-
The radar is not showing much, but we just had the biggest wind gust I have ever seen at our house! According to the radar, we are just about out of the worst weather in Point Washington.
-
Port St. Joe getting pounded right now.

We were knocked offline for about an hour. Took walk on beach about 10 am CST. Only one there, nice, good rain jacket with cap and hood. Just a little wind and rain. Will post a few pictures. Give me a minute. Storm pictures, Dec. 2, 2009. Eastern Lake in South Walton, Walton County, Florida. 8 a.m. - 10 a.m. CST

Around 8 a.m. Dec. 2 storm in SoWal at Eastern Lake.

Don't know what happened here. It is my artistic shot of the day. "Wind Fairies"

Beach at Eastern Lake looking west. 10 a.m. Low tide. Will be interesting as to what this looks like at sunset today around 4:30 p.m. CST. High tide is around 8 p.m. Surf should still be up. Be careful.

Eastern Lake Outfall and Gulf of Mexico in South Walton Beaches. Will have to see how much high surf and tides can knock down this sandbar left by the forced digging out last week which is keeping the outfall from moving more west.

Check out the sand blowing from beach into lake.

Small limbs and branches down. This is a very lightweight groundsel plant that lost a little limb. A few extra leaves to rake.Last edited by DuneLaker; 12-02-2009 at 11:10 AM.

Sugar Dunes near Eastern Lake in South Walton, FL Dec. 2, 2009

Here is view from Sugar Dunes near Eastern Lake in South Walton, Florida, looking east. Deer Lake State Park is to the east as is WaterSound. On many days you can see Panama City Beach over in Bay County. This picture was taken around 10 a.m. on Dec. 2, 2009. Most of storm had passed. It is low tide, however, so will have to check back this evening to see what surf is up to.Last edited by DuneLaker; 12-02-2009 at 12:14 PM.

No, you got judgmental of others for poking fun at the way over the top commercialization of a religious figure as an inflatable yard ornament, which has nothing to do with someone being accused of being an atheist and then in the next sentence being told to live and let live. The exact thing that you had just went against in your post, by telling others what you think they should be doing.
IMHO, putting a nativity scene in your yard that will fly away during a storm does not mean you are a good Christian and making fun of the fact that said inflatable Jesus may fly away during the storm, does not make you a bad Christian, either.
Last time I read the Bible (and I do) there was a little something in the NT about not judging others lest thee wants to be judged, too. Live and let live, step back and look at yourself? good advice for the giver and the taker.

A little rogue shower has popped up just off shore. Just a few sprinkles happening right now. Hope it is out of here by 4:30. Want to go down to beach for sunset and see what is up with the waves.
-
Just to make myself very clear. I am a Christian. I wont defend laughing at a stupid joke or making one of my own. It offended so I deleted. As far as I can tell, this is a nondenominational forum. I do stand back and look at myself every now and then and I laugh at me when I do something dumb. I suggest some try that as well.
Now about the storm. Wow what a morning that became a beautiful afternoon.

Sunset and Moonrise on Storm Day Dec. 2
All is Well Here at Day's End on Storm Day December 2, 2009.

Tide coming in at Eastern Lake outfall about 4:30 p.m. CST on Dec. 2, 2009. The gull is enjoying the view from this mini Rock of Gibraltar being reduced by incoming tide and waves.

Afternoon Tide washing over on both sides of sand piles.

Sunset tide and waves flowing into Eastern Lake Outfall.

A big moonrise over Eastern Lake in SoWal Dec. 2, 2009.Last edited by DuneLaker; 12-02-2009 at 09:43 PM.

The waves are still roaring this morning. Tide or surge must still be up somewhat as there is about 6 more inches added to the overall waterlevel of the lake since 10 pm. Gulf water came in through the open outfall with high tide last night. Drainage from watershed also adds to lake.

windy trees video
Here's a 15-second video of Point Washington State Forest trees in the wind and rain. YouTube didn't like my QuickTime edit and mangled the end, sorry. Also I don't know why YouTube shows it twice in here. I just copied the URL. ??
