enjoyed the photos of the Daisy troop in last week's edition...it was my granddaughter in the pilot's seat of Air One!

Re subscribing, it may be helpful to say that the days of operation for the Herald/Breeze business office are Monday through Wednesday and Friday. The office does observe the traditional DeFuniak Springs Thursday holiday.

I lived in North Alabama for awhile and there was a tradition there and in some places in nearby northwest Georgia for business to be closed on Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday afternoon. I would guess there are traditions for different variations of the work week in other areas, but a lot of them have died out in favor of the Monday-Friday work week now.

So most Defuniak businesses work 4 days a week? Or they add saturday?

Oh yeah. When I was a tot, you didn't go to DeFuniak to conduct business on Thursdays. IIRC, some businesses were open Thursday morning but closed at noon. My grandmother said they would roll up the sidewalk if they could.

I always assumed it was because that's when the Herald came out and everyone had to take off to go read it.

As I was growing up there -- 50's and 60's -- stores closed on Thursday afternoon, but opened on Saturday morning for the folks coming into town from out in the county. Most then closed again on Saturday afternoon. It was a wonderful tradition.
This was way before the Interstate punched through and bix box stores came to town. About the only shopping we had then in DeFuniak was the downtown area, and two or three local supermarkets on either end -- Piggly Wiggly on 10th and Thriftway (believe it sported the IGA banner in those date) at the corner of 6th and 90. Caseys had another supermarket out on Live Oak across the railroad tracks from the old CHELCO building in West End. They later moved out onto Hwy 90 in the 70's.Last edited by North Lake; 02-25-2010 at 06:34 PM. Reason: to add more

there may be something to that -- reading the Herald that is. Mr. Lynn faithfully delivered it to the Pt. Washington Post Office all those years from DeFuniak. My grandmother in Pt. Washington got it, and she usually got hers before Mama and Daddy got theirs up in DeFuniak. We were always anxious to see if Ms. Burlison had included us in the society column as visiting M/M Hartford Morgan the previous Sunday. We went down for Sunday dinner after church every other Sunday; then in the summer, to the beach afterward, usually at the Eastern Lake outfall before there were houses there. Nannie always hated to see that we were in print. I always throught it kind of neat -- if nothing else because we went down like clockwork every other Sunday. It was a neat way for folks to stay in touch before we had FaceBook, e-mail, cell phones, TV with more than 1 or 2 channels, or even private phone lines, etc. Talk about lurkers -- there were those on party lines that the phone company had. To coin a phrase, "those were the days!"Leave early and you won't be stuck in traffic.

I think our office is the last to honor this tradition. I love it. Monday and Tuesday are long days for us. It gives us a break, if we don't have something to cover on Thursday. Many of our reporters are out and about working on that day, but our office is dark on that day.

I didn't know this was really a traditional day off in DeFuniak! I just assumed that since the writers and staff work long hours and weekends, that Thursday was like their Sunday! How cool- I love old traditions like this!
