Depends on what else you are eating. With a roast or turkey, it has to be mashed potatoes and gravy. With burgers or hot dogs, french fries is a must. With a little malt vinegar and salt.

French Fries fried in Olive Oil. There is a restaurant here in the Nooga that serves these. They are the bomb!

    Ditto.

Ketchup on fries, butter or gravy on mashed toes.

Damn vegetarians ruined McDonald's fries - nowhere near as good since they stopped using beef fat to cook them.

I prefer tater tots, a nice combination of both. Growing up we mixed A-1 with our mashed potatoes.

I like both but it has to be ketchup for fries, and I don't care for them being greasy. And gravy for mashed potatoes.

Fries all they way. Salt, seasoned salt. A little vinegar too. [Edit] I like them sometimes with a touch of tobasco sauce. Same with onion rings.

    Yep.

I do like good fries though..but only really the crinkle cut ones. Not many places around here serve them though. Lots of places serve those skinny, scrawny, little shoestring type fries. If that's my choice, I take onion rings.
Ketchup's good with fries, but ranch is pretty tasty too.

    Steak = mashed potatoes
    Burger = fries

    Meat Loaf - Mashed Potatoes & A1.

    Fried Chicken - Mashed Potatoes

Steak & Seafood at most restaurants - Baked 'Tater

If krinkle cuts are involved...pass the fries and Heinz Ketchup. Only Heinz. I don't care what else is on sale.

(boy that was a tasty dream...then I woke up and remembered that I had to break up with potatoes )

Fries with burgers, potato chips with hot dogs, and mashed taters with "fancy food" or roasted meats.

Here's our daughter's recipe that she makes on Christmas Day, when we always have beef tenderloin:

    Rosemary-Garlic Mashed Potatoes
    1 head elephant garlic, peeled
    2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
    6 large new potatoes
    Butter
    Reduced-fat sour cream
1 large stalk of fresh rosemary (not from the garden – it’s too woody in December)

DIRECTIONS: Peel one head of elephant garlic. Drizzle with olive oil, wrap in aluminum foil, and bake at 350 degrees for 20-30 minutes. Scrub 6 large new potatoes (do not peel them). Cut into fourths. Boil for about 15-20 minutes or until done. Drain when cooked.

Finely chop enough rosemary to produce one tablespoon chopped.

Squeeze the garlic out of the skins. Mash it, and add to the potatoes a little at a time until you get the amount of garlic that you prefer. Then add the rosemary, a little at a time for the same reason. Add a tablespoon of extra-virgin olive oil. Add butter and sour cream to taste -- not much. Partially mash the potatoes, leaving some chunky pieces. Serves 8. That is, unless at least one of them is a hungry college student.

This works great with ham on Easter Sunday. But then we have started going to Blue Ridge Grill on Easter Sundays, so I'm not cooking. Shall I have shrimp and grits or Georgia trout and arugula. Of course we'll have grilled asparagus. YUM!

those are the worst! tater tots are not in any way related to the potato!!!

My dream is to have an entire dinner filled with mashed potatoes (they have to be my moms - or Red Bar's), french fries with ketchup (they have to be delicious diner fries and if they have that crappy batter on them forget it - btw I noticed Red Bar's had a little teensy batter stuff on theirs and its starting to piss me off), and I would love to have a baked potato with butter and sour cream as well.

I also love the roasted potatoes and fingerling roasted potatoes are wonderful as well.

A few big bakers, peeled and cut in half, and cooked up in the huge pot of tomato sauce, then served right along side your pasta. cannot beat it. the potato soaks up the deliciousness! don't overcook! it is its own beautiful side dish.

yes, RO - you can cut up some rounds and fry 'em up in a little olive oil and lots of salt and pepper. yummmmm!

    oh, I dream of potatoes.

so - for my birthday I want all of it. except the fakers - tater tots! they have always offended me and my great love for the potato!

Add some diced red and green peppers and you have O'Brien Potatoes. Those are great also. But you have to add ketchup.

Yeah, depends on the rest of the menu. Though if its the only dish, definitely french fries with ketchup! (mayo is okay, but ketchup is better! ;)

Well...I've come to realize there are times that you simply cannot avoid potatoes.

    Or sweet tea.

    Or macaroni & cheese.

    Or banana pudding.

    Or corn.

Or birthday cake and ice cream.

And that's all been in the last five days... and there is more to come

Spent two years in Italy some years back. They do patatas fritta (french fries) and always done in olive oil. Absolutely fantastic! The only thing better was the calamari fritta.

Oh lord...that's very close to my absolute favorite non-shrimp meal of all time...SAUSAGE & POTATOES.

Potatoes, sliced. a little bit of oil. Seasoned black pepper & onion salt. Slice smoked sausage in. Cover. Let it cook until the taters are tender (stirring occasionally so as not to burn, and even if it burns just a little, that's best of all). Uncover to let the grease cook off.

Not healthy for anything, except the soul.

Actually, I hear you here ShallowsNole! When I was growing up, my dad would make us fried potatoes and onions with this amazing homemade venison sausage! One of my favorite gastronomic memories...

I like what Mitch Hedberg (RIP) said:

I like baked potatoes. I don't have a microwave oven, and it takes forever to bake a potato in a conventional oven. Sometimes I'll just throw one in there, even if I don't want one, because by the time it's done, who knows?
