Fall food faves
With the chill in the air, I could not resist making a big pot of cabbage and sausage. If only I had some cornbread the trifecta of perfect would be complete. Chili is also another food that I get the urge to cook when the temps start to drop. What's your faves for fall ?

Aleo - you MUST make the cornbread!!! I made skillet cornbread last week to go with my bean soup. worth the extra effort. then I had cornbread and butter for breakfast for days.
GREAT thread. I was thinking of starting a thread about Fall colors for photos. But, food is much better. I'm ready for some pasta.
BBA - I definitely want that chicken stew recipe!

Coq au vin - aka Scooterbug family baked chicken w/ wine!
Makes the whole house smell good and is pretty hard to screw up!
Mama and Papa Scooterbug are both convinced their version is the best one, so kitchen squabbles and trash talking are common.
I make my version with yellow onion, creminis, and white wine.

Grave's chili (with Anderson modifications) definitely.

As I am reading this thread, I am eating my lunch. A big bowl of chilli with red and green peppers and onions that I made on Sunday while my wife was making Chicken Soup. What a combo!!

Really good apples, super sharp Vermont cheddar, pecans, sliced sausage, grainy mustard from France, stone ground wheat crackers (when I allow the luxury of gluten) and a nice beverage...

Breakfast food for supper -- scrambled eggs and cheesetoast with sliced tomatoes; cheese grits and bacon with a side of collards or kale and hot sauce.

Me too! I LOVE soup and so few restaurants offer fresh, well crafted or original soups. Cannot bear the glop that some places offer -- no wonder soup has a bad reputation if people think that sticky thick gooey "broccoli-cheese" gunk is soup. So. I make at least two pots of soup a week in cool weather.
Do you by chance have a thermal cooker? It's great for slow cooked soups. Basically it's a soup pot that fits inside a specially made insulator (a giant thermos to put your soup in). Great for slow cooked soups, also pot roasts and such. You get the soup started on the stove, bring to a good boil, then put it in the thermos part and it cooks delicately, slowly all day and your soup is beautiful and hot by lunch or suppertime. I haven't tried this yet but it would probably be a great way to do cabbage-potatoes-sausage all in one pot, then homemade sauerkraut on the side, oh yeah.
Also handy for hauling soup to pot lucks. You can put cold stuff in there too, like gazpacho or cucumber and buttermilk soup, or even a cold pasta salad...Susan Horn

Meatloaf and mashed potatoes.
had the BEST meatloaf yesterday at Gravel Road. That place is incredible. They have a huge list of sides. I had the swiss chard - absolutely delicious. Gravel Road is becoming our town bistro. The restaurant has always offered wonderful food, but since the new location in Seagrove, they are really doing it right for locals as well as visitors. but I have a feeling the food is intended to cater to locals - to keep us coming in the door year round. and I think they have totally succeeded.
also on the menu (which will keep me coming back to try):
chicken and dumplings
chicken pot pie
country fried steak
mashed potatoes - several ways
lots of sides including fried okra, creamed spinach, swiss chard, green bean casserole, porcini risotto, polenta.... it goes on and on.

I just had a bowl of my cabbage and sausage. A good end to a long and stressful, but beautiful day. The only way it could have been better was if I could have eaten it while taking a bubble bath, but that would just be too complicated
