FURRY FANATICS: From nutritious food to Fido fashions, Gulf Place pet store has it all

Tim and Julie Brown learned through experience the importance of feeding their pets nutritious, top-quality food.

After losing two cats to stomach cancer, the Browns began to study the disease and its possible causes. What they discovered is the difference nutritious, quality food can make in the life and longevity of an animal.

After moving to the beach four years ago, the Browns were happy to find a pet store in Miramar Beach that carried the natural pet food they wanted for their animals. However, that store closed at the end of 2010.

Disappointed at the knowledge of now facing a drive into Destin to buy the pet food they desired, the Browns discovered that most of the shuttered store's clientele lived on 30A. Encouraged by that, the Browns made the decision to buy the shop's remaining inventory and open their own store.

The couple opened Furry Fanatics just off 30A in the Gulf Place complex on Jan. 17. Located at 56 Spires Lane, unit 12A, the shop is on the first floor of a Gulf Place condo, on the north side of the amphitheater.

The most respected brands of pet foods and treats can be found at the shop, such as the Holistic brand, as well as others.
More than a pet food store, though, all the latest and most stylish pet products can be found there — from gem-studded leashes and collars to beautiful jackets and sweaters, toys, and even a carrier that resembles a car.

"We knew there was a demand on 30A and we needed a place to buy our top-quality pet food," said Julie of their decision to become store owners. "We have three dogs and two cats and they look better, are healthier and have shinier-looking coats from eating the top-quality food."

The Browns moved to South Walton from Atlanta after leaving careers in engineering and hair styling.

"We first bought a second home here and fell in love with the people and the area. It is total utopia," said Julie. "We just love it here."

It's a really cool store - they have EVERYTHING!

I am usually opposed to clothing on animals, but the clothes there are so cute, I don't care!
