    Live Trip Report, 6/16-7/2

Yahooooooo, I'm on vacation, I'm on vacation, I'm on vacation!

I left Arlington, TX Thursday morning late and drove to Jackson, Mississippi with a carload of Mexican food for my friends in Mississippi that are in serious Mexican food withdrawels! Hubs flew into Jackson after work and we visited our friends for the evening-great start to our trip!

Slept in a bit this morning, stopped in Hattisburg, Mississippi at fabulous Leatha's BBQ for an early lunch and made it on to Pensacola Beach by mid-afternoon. Our free room booked with Hilton points at the beachfront Hampton Inn wasn't ready so we hit the beach for a couple of hours and found 15-20 pretty shells, not big but several augers, olives and a few pretty bivalves and one pretty little conch type shell-all with no critters in them, of course! The water was very calm, especially for this late in the day, the water was quite clear but there was a little green stuff but not the slimy kind that sticks inside your suit so that's good!! We got checked in, cleaned up and then drove around Pensacola Beach east end neighborhoods and down to the west end as well.

The sun was starting to set as we were driving to the west end and we got some great sunset over the bay shots. I like the beach here and I like that I always find shells when we stop through but I greatly prefer Destin and SoWal for more dining and entertainment options! On to Flounders for dinner-turns out MacGuires owns them, we actually ate at Flounders when we came to Pensacola when I was a kid, it was the only place I remember there even being to eat when I was a kid!

Anyways, we had a great waitress named Chelsea and we loved the creamy seafood spinach dip and the 18 cent chowder, hubby had shrimp platter-good fried and cocktail, pretty good grilled, average popcorn shrimp and coconut shrimp, good hushpuppies!! I had the blackened triggerfish with citrus beurre blanc and mashed potatoes and asparagus-yummo, I would eat this fish on a regular basis if I could!!!

We got key lime pie to go for dessert-their serving is a half a pie! She said normally they stack it 3 pieces high but in the to go, they just put half into the container for us! We took a nice walk on the beach when the weird orange moon came out and then returned for a shared piece of pie and diet coke-ahhhhhh, life is good! We r chilling in the room now. We are off to a great start!

I'll be posting on this post so stay tuned for more fun and food in the panhandle!

So we ate a piece of the half a key lime pie late last night; it was good but not great and not good enough to mess with packing up to carry with us today.

Saturday, slept in a bit, grabbed a bagel at the Hampton's free bfast and drove down the beach road to Navarre-lovely drive, often very close to the gulf waters that are a really pretty shade of blue green in that area-you can see highway chunks in the sugar white sand from the hurricane a few years ago though-kinda weird. There's a great state park that's a day park in the middle of the island-very nice pavilion areas with picnic tables and several bathroom facilities in case anyone is looking for a nice day trip-maybe 3 people there when we drove by this morning.

Drove down Hwy 98 East then dropped down Hwy 30A to Grayton Beach fitness center to get a 2 week membership with 24 hour pass for my stay-I need to work out if I'm going to eat all of this fattening food!! We were going to try Nick's but it's not open for lunch so we hit our favorite Stinky's Fish Camp for lunch-we love dinner here and this was our first lunch. We had a very sweet server named Savannah, she's from Georgia! We started with crawfish tamales-small but very very tasty! Hubs had shrimp basket and it was very tasty as always, I had the surf and turf poboy-this was greatness!

Half roast beef debris with cheese and half fried shrimp on wonderful slightly crusty bread-best poboy we've ever eaten outside of New Orleans and better than many we've had in New Orleans! They cook their fried shrimp perfectly IMO-just the right amount of coating and seasoning. We drove around a while and called Royal Beach Rentals to let them know we're in town early if early checkin became available.

On to Seacrest Beach shopping area and a long stint window shopping at Richard Arriaga's Pearls Gone Wild-I could buy it all if I had the money! Then to Sweet Jeni's for a chocolate peanut butter cupcake that was pretty good and some extremely good Nutella gelato (my favorite flavor!) that we shared.

Royal Beach Rentals called while we were there and we got ot check in at 2pm to our Cassine Gardens townhouse. It's a cute unit, very clean and well stocked/well organized kitchen, generous number of towels, too! Unpacked and chilled a bit after a busy couple of days! I hit the Publix and got some bfast foods and some Bunny brand bread and yeungling for hubs-two treats not available in Texas!!

Then back to chill and make some fresh pina coladas for me-yeungling for hubs and a nice stroll on the beach for a while as sun was setting-ahhhhhhh, relaxation! I served as photographer for a family's white shirt beach pictures-fun to help someone preserve their happy beach memories! More beach walking and finishing our drinks-I got a bit of a buzz of my coladas!

Hubs decided pizza sounded good to him so we gave The Pickle Factory a whirl-we've heard good reports on it. We get a table and up walks our waitress Savannah from Stinky's and she recognizes us and then I laugh and tell her that I was just thinking she looked like Savannah from Stinky's!

She is friends with folks that work there and was moonlighting a bit. Hubs had a few amberbock drafts, tea for me! We shared the moon pie-fresh in house made focacia bread with pesto-yummy and then hubs selected to play it safe with a pepperoni pizza, cracker thin crisp crust and good flavor to the sauce, not too heavy on cheese so crust stayed crispy-yummo!

Two thumbs up from these pizza fans! Again, great and friendly service from Savannah-we laughed and told her we'd be looking for her at each restaurant we hit this week! Since we had a late dinner, Hwy 30A was pretty much shut down after dinner; ran through Publix for ice cream and back to the townhouse.

We each had a couple of bites of Ben and Jerry Red Velvet Cake ice cream-looks like strawberry but really tastes just like Red Velvet cake! Now you see why my gym membership is imperative! I told hubs that I can't eat like this for two weeks! Chilling and watching a little Empire Strikes Back on Spike TV right now-gnight boys and girls!

Sunday, up at 7:30 am and off to Grayton Fitness-clearly needing a workout after all of the food we've been eating! On to the beach for a few hours of sun, waves, walking on the beach, meeting nice people, relaxed, finished a book-ahhhh, happiness!!

Back to our townhouse for lunch-fresh Publix baguette with peppered ham and havarti from the deli and some light ranch dip-made it yesterday, this is a total family beach tradition for us!! Took a nap-don't you love vacation naps?! Hubs and I took in a little pool time and met a nice family with a darling little girl with the cutest little dimples and we're looking forward to hanging out with them this week, already planning cocktails and recipe trading-I love meeting new people!

Got dressed and had dinner plans of The Red Bar until we saw there was no parking and a million people outside so on to Nick's on the Beach. Started with a shared bowl of gumbo-tasty but needed a bit of salt and we like it a bit spicier but we agreed that we'd eat it again. We got a fried shrimp dinner-since that's what they're famous for and we also got a bacon wrapped fried shrimp because how can that not be great!

Indeed regular friend shrimp and bacon wrapped fried shrimp were great, very nice very large, perfect amount of breading and cooked just right-yummy!!! Got a piece of carrot cake to go and we just knocked it out-two enthusiastic thumbs up for that as well! Our service was friendly but spread a little thin at Nick's. Swung back by Red Bar to check out the last set of Dread Clampitt-fabulous as always, visited with some friendly locals, looking forward to returning tomorrow evening for dinner and more music from Dread Clampitt.

The mandolin player looks like a younger version of my Dad so I had to get a picture with him! That's it for today, just relaxing a bit and then crashing so I can do it again tomorrow!

Up and back to the gym-again, too much good food, met a really nice lady from Memphis and enjoyed a visit with her while we crossramped!

Back to townhouse and hubs was awake so we decided to bike down to the Meltdown on 30A for brunch-I know, kills the workout!! I got a croque monsieur-today's special, hubs got brie and bacon. The folks in this airstream trailer make a perfectly cooked grill cheese, fantastic gooey on the inside and a nice little crispy outside-awwww, buttery goodness!

Hubs and I walked the shops of Seaside, I bought a darling beach hat in a shop at Ruskin Place and did some serious eyeballing of some pearl jewelry-I need to add to my collection! Biked back and hit the beach for a while and strolled and played in the very large waves for a bit-water was more clear and less green today which was nice but the waves were beating us up a bit!

Back to townhouse to snack and nap-again I love the vacation nap! Dressed and off to the Red Bar where we promptly snagged a sofa seat to enjoy more Dread Clampitt-they remembered us from last night and played my favorite song of theirs, a cover of The Band's Cripple Creek-fabulous band, fabulous song, love them!!

We were seated in the bar area and hubs had the shrimp and crawfish pasta, I had the panne' chicken; both were tasty and even with his help I could only finish half of mine so he's got a chicken breast for a sandwich for lunch tomorrow!! The night feels great so we walked around a bit and then headed back to rest up. Another great day!

It was another lovely sunny day at the beach! Up and to Grayton Fitness for a body mechanics class with Shea-a version of pilates/yoga and such, there were only 5 of us and I don't do this type of class at home but Shea really walked us through it and I enjoyed my workout. Back to the townhouse where I decided to fix bfast, half eggs and half whites with a 100 calorie bagel and light and fit yogurt-I just left the gym so I'm still feeling health kicky! I promptly set off fire alarm by getting pan too hot-using a new stove can be a challenge-woke hubs up from a dead sleep thinking I'm burning the place down!!
On to the beach, water has cleared up more but remains a bit rough, I set up my chair and umbrella and chilled, took a stroll on the beach then chilled some more-ahhhhhh, relaxation!
Back to townhouse to cool off and rest up, we had a key lime pie delivered by the lovely and talented Kat (of the former restaurant D&K Cafe) then off to dinner at Stinky's Fish Camp, we only waited about 20 minutes for dinner where we started with bean butter and crackers-yum #1 then on to their lovely macncheese-yum #2! I had the taste of Stinky's yum #3 which included a small crawfish pie, a piece of catfish, a crabcake, stir fry julienne veggies, brabant potatoes, cheese grits-omg this was good stuff, sadly I couldn't finish and had to share with hubs but he was kind enough to share some of his smokey short ribs with me.....so tender, smokey and delicious with cheese grits and lovely green beans-which he didn't eat but they were very pretty! We left Stinky's with very full tummies!

Another beautiful day! Up and to the gym then back to condo for a quick bite and to get hubs up and going and we took off for Grayton Beach for a while. The water was really pretty but really rough again; hubs got nuked by one wave! The dune lake was low and no water was coming in or out and there was at least 25 yards of sand separating the lake and gulf-we've never been there when they looked so far apart. We still walked around in the dune lake but it had some funk in the bottom so I wasn't getting into it! We walked up and down the beach and relaxed in our chairs a while where we saw a couple of dolphins playing in the big waves-what a delight it always is to see dolphins at play!
We headed towards Destin for our two part lunch plan, hubs loooooves egg rolls from Dynasty chinese so we went there for egg rolls and then planned to go to the Back Porch for a sandwich and view. Egg rolls were tasty and traffic was terrible so we gave up on Back Porch idea and rolled up the beach road by Crystal Beach and stopped at Blue Mountain Creamery for the rest of our lunch, I had fresh made strawberry and hubs had a chocolate peanut butter cup hershey ice cream. Back to our townhouse where we each had a slice of our fabulous key lime pie from Kat-yes, we had double dessert for lunch but all we had were a couple of egg rolls for our lunch so it's justified!!!! Hubs headed up for a nap and I hit the pool for a while then headed up for a nap. Finally got ready to go to dinner a little after 8 and headed to Shoo Mama's on Hwy 98, hugs was feeling anti seafood so he had a chicken fried ribeye and I had the black and blue ribeye, blackened with blue cheese; both tasty; really nice folks at this place and I plan to be back next week.
We called it a night and headed back to the townhouse; ahhhh, vacation happiness!

What a great day! It was supposed to rain today but it didn't, it did cloud up a bit and cool off a bit and that was nice!! Up and to a circuit training class at Grayton Fitness, can we say sore muscles now!? Back to change for the beach and we hit the beachside park in Seagrove, strolled almost to Seaside and back, played in the waves, water was clear and blue but waves were still quite rough. I fell asleep in my beach chair and then we hit Seagrove Market cafe: grill shrimp poboy for me, fried shrimp basket for hubs. On to Grayton to Big Mama's Hula Gallery-what cool art and stuff, lots of repurposed art, cool jewelry and paintings, as well as furniture and just all round interesting objects d'Art and super nice folks. We were in there year before last and they remembered us-always nice. On to Seaside to the bookstore and Central Records to talk music nerd shop (hubs and guys in record store, I mostly nodded) but did share a friend from Austin, TX's band as well as an friend of a friend's vinyl record jewelry-hopefully future profits for all parties! Next to 30A Art and Junk where we visited with the lovely and friendly owner and admired lots of cool jewelry and stuff. Back to townhouse to clean up for dinner. We had reservations at Cafe Tango but changed our minds and decided to go to Christiano's Ristorante-so glad we decided on Christiano's! Wow, to start, bread was AMAZING and the spicy herbed olive oil was out of this world! Next hubs had the chicken and sausage gumbo, good and a little different but hubs really liked it. I had Badabing shrimp, about 8 large shrimp in a wine, butter cream sauce with sundried tomato and green onions-wow, wow, wow, I would swim in this sauce! I had shrimp special of capallini with shrimp, wine/butter/garlic sauce, so good, at least 10 large shrimp, the sauce was rich but light. Hubs had sausage and peppers penne with pomodoro sauce-wholly crap was this good stuff. The pomodoro sauce was perfection! Got a chocolate amaretto cake slice to go, too full to eat it at the time. Our service was smooth, timely and professional, the chef-Chris-came out to visit the tables, he's a Steelers Fan but we didn't hold it against him since his food was so fabulous! Chris was very friendly and I will be back next week if all goes as planned I called my mom to brag about the fabulous food! Back to townhouse to call it a night, c ya'll tomorrow!

Friday, mine and hubby's last full day at the beach together. I'm up and to the gym then back to get ready for the beach. Hands down our best water day, the gulf waters were very calm and very clear and blue this morning. I walked the beach and stopped to speak to several folks that I've visited with throughout the week-I love meeting folks!!! Relaxed in my chair and just chilled. Hubs drove around a bit and then picked me up for lunch at Flip Flops-they were super busy, we waited a long time for our burgers that were so not special-we really liked our food a couple of years ago, this year it was cold buns, pre-fab burgers and forgotten bacon with the yuck part of the lettuce thrown on-I guess I'm done with them. We drove to the new mini Super Walmart (sounds weird I know but that's what it is!) and picked up a tshirt for my little cousin, hoped to find a couple of tanks for my stepdad's yard work but no luck! Across the street to the Donut Hole-wow, first time to get donuts there in years and I'd forgotten what
I was missing!!! Hubs and I split a red velvet (fabulous), a glazed, a choc topped and powdered sugar with a diet coke-evens it out right!?! Got a choc cake with choc top and a cream puff to go for our later. Got cleaned up and hit the beach for our traditional sunset trip to the beach with a bottle of Tattinger's champagne and Donut Hole treats, took lots of pics, met some really nice folks who loved our final night sunset tradition and kept wanting to take our picture! Headed to Ciao Bella pizza for hubs' last hurrah dinner-I know odd choice but he really likes it! I was a bit tipsy and wolfed it down like I'd never had pizza before! Back to pack up our townhouse for the 10am check out. I drop hubs at the airport tomorrow at 3:45pm and check into a new house with friends at 4pm. I'm sad hubs has to fly home but am looking forward to a week with my girlfriends!

We had a little rain come in Friday evening and it cooled things off-nice...up and walked to Seaside and back for a nice outdoor workout Sat am then cleaned up, packed and checked out of our townhouse. We had rented through Royal Beach Rentals and they were great to work with and I'll be glad to use them again, Hubs and I hit some shops along 30A, had a fabulous lunch at Stinky's, JB waited on us and we shared a crawfish hushpuppy appetizer then I had a half shrimp half cuban poboy-yummy! hubs had shrimp basket-yummy! JB was great and I'll be looking for him next time! We drove down to Panama City Beach, stopped at the Italian Bakery that's not as good as our first trip there a few years ago then drove around Pier Park which is really cool and has more shops than I remembered it having then drove the rest of the way down the beach front road and stopped at the $1 trinket shop for lots of junky prizes to carry home-tons of shell necklaces, shark tooth necklaces and such, all for $1 each! Dropped hubs at the airport and returned to Seagrove to meet my friends at our beach house.
House is 3 full stories with a crows nest, we rented this because it's right by beach and has an elevator (because we have a mom with double knee replacement with us as well as an aunt with MS), the elevator's not working and likely won't be before tomorrow evening-this has caused problems and much stress! The house is well furnished but there's marks in ceiling from water damage, carpet is rather yucky and there's only 1 towel per person and only 2 cup towels and 2 rags-this house sleeps 15 or more and was pretty expensive so I expected no water stains, a working elevator and more towels! they are trying to get elevator fixed but this is an issue. House does have an extra fridge in the garage, garage is huge and came with a couple of bikes which is nice, pool is nice sized as well.
Settled in and then to dinner at Nick's, everyone was happy with their fried goodness as well as our steamed crab claw appetizer. Me and 2 others hit the new Walmart and found it's not got everything that you need really and is laid out so weird then we had the slowest checker ever, I mean ever! Back to unload-it's nice to have some 11 year old boys for this, especially since elevator is broken! Visited with friends a while and we all crashed!
Sunday, up and to the gym then we all hit the beach. The water was calm, clear and wonderful! We all floated around like corks, it was great! Then waves started and we boogie boarded and beached till we were starved then came in to eat, pool time and rest. We did build your own pizza night and played some games a while then crashed!
Monday, up and to the gym then to the beach, the waves were crazy and the water is quite green today, we boogie boarded and got beat up on the beach for a while then laid out till hungry again. We have a ton of dips and breads and cheeses and crackers and chips-who needs protein when you have snacks and chocolate!! you know it's a girls trip! We are all resting for a while now, those waves wore us out!!

Cleaned up and headed to Stinky's Fish Camp for dinner at 8pm, late on purpose to miss the crowds, neither Savannah nor JB were working but we had Molly and Jennifer and they took good care of us, a table of 8 and one of 7 with this many women and kids is a challenge to wait and they did great! Everyone was happy, the kids crab legs were a huge serving! Mac n cheese was a huge hit with everyone as was crawfish pot pie, fried brie and fried shrimp baskets and catfish! Back with full tummies to crash.

Tuesday morning to the gym to go to Pilates class with Shea, came out to some rain so we spent an hour and a half getting ready to hit the outlet mall for the younger generation and movie theater for the older generation. Of course the mall was crazy but I got some great shoes at Kenneth Cole, got my cousin Tate a darling cammo swimsuit and flipflops and got hubs some cute boxers at Banana Republic. We all got cookies at Mrs. Fields-always a hit! Back to the house with 2 tired 5 year olds to rest up. Fixed some great fresh bruschetta topping as well as fabulous pasta salad for future lunches this week. Tonight is dinner in, we're having chicken spaghetti, salad and bread-yum! We may roll down to Seaside later.

Well a storm blew in before dinner, great clouds, thunder and cooler wind from our 3rd floor balcony overlooking the ocean-it's so worth it to pay for that view if you can!!! Fabulous dinner in, creamy fattening goodness and then a rousing game of Apples to Apples-a very fun card game with the tweens and 30 somethings while the little ones and 50+'s read and watched tv. I squeezed a ton of limes (by hand) and made pineapple lime margaritas-fabulous!!! juice of 2 limes, 1 shot tequila, 3/4 shot orangecello, shot of pineapple juice-shake it and add a splash of sprite/7 up; these are tasty!!! We also enjoyed a key lime pie from my friend Kat-all thumbs up and new converts to Kat's pies!!!
Wednesday, skipped the gym, can you believe it!?! Morning balcony time with friends then off to beach for several hours of boogie boarding, getting beat up by waves, tanning and chatting and a walk to the dune lake with my friend's son-he's so ready to return to snorkle tomorrow! Lunch of pasta salad, ham salad, pimento cheese, bruschetta-all home made, yummy! Girlfriends pool time while kids rested and then kids crashed the pool so I took the big boys to the beach for more boogie boarding. Water was quite green and rough this am, much better this afternoon late and tide was low which is always relaxing to me! Dressed and off to Seaside for sandwiches at the Meltdown on 30A-yummy! We had a minor meltdown or two related to some kids dire need of glow necklaces and light sabers and fairy wands-this was eventually resolved when the kids won out! Walked around a bit but these kids were tired, good band played but we needed last night's breeze! Back at our house now, little kids are singing vacation bible school songs-how sweet is that-in the bunk room; big boys are playing cards with the aunt, the rest of us are fixing drinks or computering for a bit while one makes homemade

Nancy's chicken spaghetti has a 16oz angel hair pasta with 1 can of rotel, 1lb of velveeta cubed, 2 cans cream of mushroom soup (or one mushroom and one cream of chicken), small can of drained chopped olives, small can of sliced mushrooms, 1 package boneless skinless chicken breasts.

Cook the chicken and then cook pasta in chicken water, reserve a cup and a half of water. Combine soups, olives, mushrooms, shredded chicken, cubed velveeta and some liquid to get a creamy texture, bake at 350 till bubbly in a greased casserole dish. You can omit olives and mushrooms and add another can of rotel if you want to keep it more simple. This is an East Texas tradition!!!

Pilates based class called Body Mechanix at Grayton Fitness, stretching and strength, Shea is so nice and helpful to a pilates novice, nice group of folks in the class as well.

Friday, last day, up and to the beach early-not as green as Thursday but still pretty funky-I chilled alone at beach for a while. Girls called and they were heading to Seacrest to get feathers for their hair so i headed out with them-I got a rooster feather and a ocean blue feather, both thin feathers-nothing too wild since I have to train at a conference this week! Other girls got wild colors-fun! Shopped around a bit and then back to beach house for lunch. Headed back to beach as a group and we played in the waves and took lots of pictures. I took the oldest boys to the dune lake to snorkel and they LOVED it-much fun! Sadly we had to pack it in from the beach around 4 to get ready for our last hurrah dinner. We headed to Bayou Bills for dinner-half of our group was wanting crab so that made sense-it's not my favorite place but its always good and has good service and can handle a large group, the kids love the glass blower, too! Off to Walmart in Destin for some tshirts and such then back to back up the beach house-not nearly as fun as unpacking for the week!
Saturday morning up and loaded the car then headed back west. Had to stop for yeungling at Publix for hubby, stopped at Watermelon Patch shoe store in Mississippi then dropped a friend and her kiddos in LIndale, TX to meet her in laws for a big trip to Canton trades days the next day for them and headed on home to Arlington. It was a great couple of weeks at the beach; if we could just win the lotto, I'd sooooooooo have a place there!
