Can District 5 Recreational Plat Fees be Allocated to Other Districts?
I received a heads up from somebody "in the know" about this item on tomorrow's BCC meeting agenda. I am hoping that there is a good explanation, or if this is allowable, that the item is removed from tomorrow's agenda and we can lobby to keep our South Walton money in South Walton at a future meeting. Thoughts?
I just sent this email to the County Commissioners, and it explains the issue.
Good afternoon Commissioners,
It has just been brought to my attention that $10,000 of District 5 Recreational Plat Fees are on the agenda to be voted on and allocated to the “Darlington School Roof Project” (from the published agenda for tomorrow’s meeting, 3/27/2012, Tab A, item 7).
I have a few questions, and as this item will be addressed at a meeting in DeFuniak and I will be at work and not be able to attend, I would like to have this item postponed to another meeting, which will also give us time to look into this matter. In the meantime, maybe you can answer a few questions for us!
Why is District 5 Recreational Plat money going to another district?
Why is District 5 Recreational money going to a school project, and one not even in our district? Why is this expense not covered by the WCSD?
We have to scrape and scream for every bit of recreational money we get in South Walton, so this agenda item appears to be giving it away to another district. We could really use every dime, and $10,000 is not that much, but I bet we could find plenty of people in South Walton that would have a great idea how to use money that appears to be ours to use, not yours to give away.
I look forward to your response.

Item 6 in Tab A also caught my eye- $40,000 of our district's (5) plat fees going to the artificial reef project. Wouldn't that be an environmental project?

I just learned something about the Darlington School- from the Walton County website- so the WCSD is not responsible for the upkeep, but why would Dist t5 recreation plat fees be used for it?
Darlington School
Background

Front entrance of Darlington School.
Darlington School is located on Highway 181 in Darlington community. It once served as a public school built in the early 1900s and closed in the early 1980s. Today, the building is still standing and is used by the community for various reunions and gatherings. The Board of County Commissioners has accepted responsibility for maintaining the building and will work to restore the school as funding permits.

The Darlington School is a Walton County Park. It hasn't been a Walton County School for several years and is owned by Walton County and not the School District.

Just found that out- we must have replied at the same time!
However, I still don't understand why Dist. 5 recreational plat fees are going out of district.
