Parrotheads Unite April 20
More than 500 of Jimmy Buffett’s colorful fans will adorn the white sands behind the Barefoot Beach Club for the seventh annual Parrot Head Rendezvous beginning April 20.
The gathering is being billed as a party with a purpose for Children’s Home Society (CHS) of Florida.
“We’ve been working with them for five of the seven years” in operation, said Diamond Lil Lewis, president of the Panama City Parrot Head Club. “We just liked what they were about.”
Last year, the event raised more than $15,000 for CHS. This year Lewis predicts the “day-tripper” pass, which costs $20, will generate more money due to barriers and increased security at the venue. And, the event will bring even more money in to benefit Bay County and local businesses.
“We have people coming from 53 clubs from New York City to San Diego,” Lewis said. “And it not only raises money for the children, but also helps the local economy.”
The Panama City Parrot Head Club already has more than 500 people registered for the three-day beach party this year, and advance registration — including all three-day passes — are sold out, according to the group’s website.
The days of the event will be filled with 10 bands from all over specializing in “trop-rock” playing back to back. There also will be food, a raffle and a silent auction, and each purchase will benefit local children, according to Erica Spivey, CHS director of development.
“We survive on donations and grants,” she said. “Many of the grants are designated for specific purposes, so general fund donations really help in expanding and enhancing our programs. … Every single dollar made from the event will go directly to the” CHS.
The local CHS chapter runs seven programs ranging from adoption, early intervention and child development, case management, substance abuse counseling and parent education. They serve more than 2,500 children and families in the area, according to Spivey.
