Stretch of Sea Art Exhibit at Hidden Lantern Gallery June 21-July 28, 2012Art exhibit at Hidden Lantern GalleryHidden Lantern Gallery
Rosemary Beach, FL
June 21 - July 28, 2012
This exhibition juxtaposes two artists’ interpretations of a single stretch of sea in two different media— painting and photography. In Florida’s Emerald Coast shore and sea, Comer and Luter have their muse— their subject and inspiration. It is their pursuit to translate onto canvas and printed surface its beauty, its myriad colors, its dancing light, its sublimity. A conversation between sea and paintbrush, light andcamera, artist and artist is presented here.
The sea is in Comer’s continuous view as she paints from vast glass panels on the south, east and west sides of an ocean-view studio in Old Seagrove Beach. The sea’s perpetual presence and Comer’s resulting familiarity with her subject are reflected in the subtle yet modernist use of acrylic washes and gloss gels that come together to speak so accurately to the sea and sky’s infinite color spectrum. A local artist since 1979, when she moved to Seagrove Beach, Comer’s work has become well-known in the South Walton arts community. She has been featured in an array of southeastern venues and was named Artist of the Year by Otto’s Gallery in Ellijay, Georgia.
This exhibition introduces the work of Luter— both a fine art photographer and professor of photography— as the first time her photographs have been presented as a collection in a gallery setting. She worked first as a portrait photographer, but her subject soon became the local land and sea. As her artist statement reads: “I love simplicity. I love light. I love to capture a feeling or a fleeting moment. My camera is my magic ticket, an invitation to go places, talk to people, exceed boundaries and to create.”
