    Grayton beach behaving badly

My family meets here each and every summer. My parents are now retired here. WE LOVE GRAYTON. However, Sunday at the beach is out of control. The beach is packed with vehicles. There is no space for a chair and umbrella. This sunday we observed an all time low... A local decided to make the "potty place" next to their vehicle and actually held up a towel while others urinated next to the truck. REALLY? ... I am greatly saddend by the disregard for this beautiful beach. We have always loved Grayton as it is laid back and "funky". But - urinating on the beach is just a different kind of funky!!!

lol - I'll tell them to put a port-a-potty out.

I don't think I've ever been to Grayton WITHOUT seeing someone hiding between vehicles to potty. It's kinda like going camping for a day. Ha!

i've always wondered why doesn't grayton have porible potties?. it inane as there thousands of people on the beach and the red bar nor anyone else wants the whole beach to use there businesses, Has this every been discussed by the county?

Honestly id rather pee in the gulf or sand than have to look and smell port o potties

I wasn't at Grayton on Sunday, so don't blame the Redneck Hillbilly....

Don't want to think about it:-). I think with the vehicles on the beach (and now the peeing) the locals are letting the tourists know we can take our tents and go somewhere else. Actually, we gave up on the tent, since the locals were so against those. We're saving it for tailgating:-). Ellen

People have been peeing on the beach for decades. It has nothing to do with chasing tourists away, and everything to do with a full bladder.

I thought it was the oldest tradition in Grayton!

I would just be thankful a towel was being used.

Many territorial mammals use scent-marking to signal the boundaries of their territories; the marks may be deposited by urination, by defecation, or by rubbing parts of the bodies that bear specialised scent glands against the substrate.

If you were really offended by this maybe you should try a different beach. I personally don't go to Grayton beach very often because it is overly crowded and you can imagine all the pee in the lake!

How do they justify allowing vehicles on the beach? Where are the environmentalists? Not to mention the oil leaking onto the sand from some of the beach buggies that supposedly pass for cars.

Grayton Beach is it's own animal. It is "old school". Beach buggies, bonfires...SoWal. From a local standpoint, it's kind of like a private spot. You can drive out on any given day and see 15 people that you know. I'm not justifying bad behavior, but i've never smelled tee tee at Grayton, but i've seen 100 people pee there. Like good little kitties, they always cover it up. I will say, from a local standpoint, that there is nothing more fun than driving out on the beach with your family and a TON of gear (kayaks, paddleboards, surfboards, coolers and chairs) strapped to your beach vehicle. We locals leave no trace. In fact, we usually drive off with a trash bag full of other peoples garbage and discarded items. It is crowded sometimes, but the state park is right next door. There is always a clear spot to park an umbrella just to the east of the lake. Hope to see you out there! Enjoy the beach!!

Yes, Hop, well put. I am not a fan of Grayton Beach so I do as suggested. Go somewhere else. That said, it is a beach that the local residents should be able to do with as they wish and you are right, they are much more protective of it than are many of those who do not live here. There are miles of beach for those who do not find it to their liking. Choose some of it for yourself.

So true Hop. The locals and many frequent visitors party like its 1999 out on Grayton beach all day and night. They know how to lay out a feast and enjoy the sunset and a moon rise or a full moon or a dark night full of stars.

They know how to meet new friends and help visitors. They pick up trash. They give people a lift off the beach when needed. They tell them what the double red flag means. Or the purple flag.

Last night was filled with families and friends having their annual vacation reunion on the beach - I don't know who they are but I see reunions out there all the time. Folks from out of town who get it. They are claiming grayton as their special beach. They are leaving no trace.

Grayton Beach is a special place.

For me, part of the anticipation of going to Grayton is starting my Grayton box.We do a lot of cooking at the rental so I try to pack enough for our first dinner at the beach. Love getting up and making breakfast for those who when home have little time for breakfast.I have been having Sowal dreams ; does that make meSowal? So in Oct. my whole bunch will once again be together. If you smell bacon or country ham cooking, follow your nose ,there's always extra and new friends are always welcome.

I thought peeing on the beach was just one of the warm traditions, like sunbathing.

Will peeing on the beach give one bragging rights?

Not really so much of a bragging right as marking your territory down there. Hey, sometimes it's hard to find a place to park!

I am kind of partial to parking in places that don't smell like pee.

Better to pee in the sand then leave trash, cigarette butts, empty water bottles, tents, broken chairs, beach toys, flip flops, underwear, towels and dirty diapers on our favorite local beach. I have picked up every single one of these items off Grayton ...all left by tourists. Now, tell me again, who is behaving badly?

All may have been left by tourists but not by all tourists. I always pick up more than enough crap left by other people.I'm a good tourist, love Grayton ,would never trash it .Makes me feel bad when I see people leaving trash.

To be sure...not all tourists leave trash on our beaches!! Some locals are just as remiss, sadly! We do have some of the most beautiful beaches and dune lakes in the world, I wish the people who enjoy them would respect them. I know this...those who leave trash on our beaches do not respect themselves either!
