King snake
Imagine raking leaves from behind the bushes and raking out one of these like my husband did. Only about two feet long though and skinny. Young snake. Didn't kill it though as they kill poisonous snakes which we have around here. I went out and found it hidden behind some vegetation by a tree. It did it's tongue at me and withdrew back into the vegetation against the tree. Checked again and it was gone from there. Probably went back down under the leaves by our front porch.

Re: King snake
Did you stick your tongue back at it?
and say na na na nana na
I hate snakes. Stepped on one right after Ivan hit while we were cleaning grounds. Had boots on though. It was one of the black ones, not poisonous, still alarming though.
We also had a copperhead on my lawn once while hubby was mowing
and it got aggressive and they are poisonous.

Re: King snake
No Mango, I didn't stick my tongue back out at him, hee hee. He was more scared of me than me of him. We have cottonmouths and copperheads around here that come up on occasion, nothing like a good dead one of them. The problem is, he has to still finish raking the leaves from behind the very bushes where he was. I am sure he is back in there.

Me too! Although I've never seen one, I apparently have one or more in my backyard. Little bit in my avatar got bit twice by one a couple of years ago. It was not funn. You can still see the scars from the bites.

Re: King snake
No no- don't kill them! King snakes and black snakes are great to have around! If you want to get rid of one, ask a neighbor to "relocate" it for you- in our neighborhood, Bdarg is the snake man. I bet there is someone in your 'hood too. But don't chop them up- ouch!

Re: King snake
My grandmother was so terrified of snakes that if she heard the word, she would become ill. One time I decided to test that- and she boxed my ears pretty good. I never said "snake" again in her presence.

Re: King snake
I don't like them, but I also don't like to kill them. I am the type that will scoop up a spider, ant, wasp, fly...whatever and shoo them out of the house. I fill so guilty killing them. I even say a little prayer for the road kill that I see on the side of the road...I am such a weenie that way!!!! However, I did have "mouse" problem a couple years ago. We tried the catch and release and it didn't work. So my other half decided it was time for the poison...OMG, it was awful. I thought I had a couple. Well, after a few days I started noticing an awful odor in my kitchen, I kid you not, every drawer and cupboard I opened had a deceased mouse or 2 or 3 in it....I had to take everything out of drawers and cabinets and clean like mad. Everytime I saw a dead one I just felt awful. So, never again will I do that. I haven't had another problem with them though.

Re: King snake
kdw: I'm the same way. I hate upsetting the "balance of nature", but I dang sure don't wanna run into a copperhead either! As long as I stay out of their way, it's all good....live and let live!!

Re: King snake
I remember walking down a trail in the woods in VA a few years back and on one particular day, I stepped/jumped over 11 snakes. I thought they would never stop coming. The trail was on a slight hill and sometimes the snakes would be on the upper side, and scoot between my legs as I came down the path. By the time I stepped over the fourth or fifth one, my heart rate slowed to a normal pace and it became un-eventful.
