SoWell on Sowal
okay my little fitness wannabees... here it is. and thanks for deciding on this thread name. After sharing our goals and strategies for fitness and weight reduction, we'll all be sowell on sowal!!!
Cork and I are doing at least one yoga/pilates class per week now. plus we bicycled the other day (almost killed me). and plan to do exercise on our own at home as well.
as far as diet and weight reduction, we haven't really gotten very far. I'm reading two current resources for motivation and just general info: Body for Life for Women (A Woman's plan for Physical and Mental Transformation) - Pamela Peeke, MD, and The Reality Diet (fight fat with fiber) - Schnur, MD. They are both really straightforward, no nonsense approaches to weight loss - and include a lot of info on weekly menus, exercise, etc.
I know that I will need a menu plan to follow in the first 3 months of my "transformation". If I have a reasonable menu to follow, then I don't mind shopping and cooking. Having it all planned out makes it easier for me, and it makes me eat things that I would otherwise avoid or not think about eating (it expands the culinary experience)...
What are your goals? I need to finish up some of my reading and then I plan to put my goals on paper, along with my plan to achieve them. I have also already started a food and exercise journal.
I'll be sharing some of this with you. I hope we can all share successes, questions, recipes, exercise tips, etc... hope to see you on here every day looking for motivation and at the same time giving support to all of us..

Re: SoWell on Sowall
Here is my approach. Stay away from refined sugars, white flours, and rice. Instead choose whole grains, veggies, meats, brown rice. I use the store-brand instant brown rice and I love it. It is so quick, easy and tasty. I do drink Diet Soda though. I know it is not the best thing to drink, but I have a hard time getting water down. I do drink it occasionaly though. I really need to incorporate exercise in my day though. That is the hardest thing for me. I got the eating under control, but really need motivation for the exercise part! I am going to get on a schedule and do it though. Good luck to everyone!!!!!!!

Back to topic.
My mother in law is in physical therapy after an extended illness. One thing they told her that stuck with me is the simple thought that your body responds to even the smallest stimulus. Just a small amount of exercise, if that's all you can muster, will still put the wheels in motion for change. In other words, don't forego exercise if you can't do a full half hour, just do what you can, even if it's only 5 minutes, and it's still beneficial, not a waste of time. Muscles will shrink if not used, but they won't if even a little bit of effort is made.
As my "penance" for watching Idol,
, I try to force myself to run in place or do sit ups during the commercials. I keep some 5 lb weights by the sofa too, in case I get inspired. Sometimes that's my only exercise for the week, but it's something...

Re: SoWell on Sowal
I run 3-4 times a week. Yesterday I ran 3 1/2 miles but it varies daily. I would rather exercise than give up anything I love to eat OR drink.
Hope it's working...Adult playground equipment...it's called a barstool.

I'm going to start gradual with the excercise. Mostly walking a mile or two in the evenings and bike riding with the Dylan. I'm not quite ready to start the dieting part. I hope to get some good menu ideas first!!!

Seeing that we ate our way through Puerto Rico...and for a short evening Puerto Rican food proved to not agree with me I should be ok...I will be spinning after work every day until I leave. Then when I go to LA I'll quit eating all together. I should be a twig by New Years.

I'm not sure that you will be allowed to even purchase a ticket, and I know they won't let you on the plane unless you sign a liposuction rider. There is a mandatory lipo rule for anyone attempting to enter LA at higher than 5% body fat. The good news is that all westbound flights are now equipped and staffed with experienced suction teams.

Well; you know what they say about marriage -putting a wedding ring on that finger is like pulling the rip cord on an inflatable raft. I have been 'married' for 10 years now and let's just say that there is a connection between the number of manatee sightings and the number of times I go to the beach.

My idea of exercise is to simulate dumbells by placing marachino cherries at each end of a toothpick. When I raise my martini glass to my lips it looks deceptively like arm curls.
Who knows, maybe one day I will be motivated to join you all in this fitness craze, and then I too can be that voluptuous 'gal' on the beach screaming "Trim-Spa Baby!" at all the gawking tourists.

Re: SoWell on Sowal
Darn. The routines are designed to simulate terrain and situations encountered in actual bicycle rides, including hill climbs, sprints and interval training. Coasting downhill, however, is not simulated.

Re: SoWell on Sowal
My goal is to get some exercise. I can't motivate to do it, and it's really my undoing. I'm not in good shape, but my eating habits are OK enough that I'd probably lose weight by just adding the exercise alone. I'd also like to finally open that exercise DVD jdarg talked me into getting.

Re: SoWell on Sowal
Goals:
1. To be able to wear all those clothes that I refuse to get rid of because "I'll wear them again, someday". Someday is here.
2. To be around to watch my grandchildren grow up.
3. To make better choices concerning food, fitness and habits.
Realities:
1. I'm a slug, what can I say? Absolutely HATE exercise!
2. I love good food? And by good, I mean butter, cheese(especially blue), and liquor.
3. I need prodding, coaxing and downright meaness to get me off my a$$!
So, there you have it in a nutshell. Lindabobhat, NOW gimme that peptalk and copy your tips over here. Tootsie and Cork, I'm so proud of you girls! Your a$$es will thank you later! SJ, well there are just no words for your contribution here
Triple B and 30gAy: I like the way you think!
I have begun to eat low fat, low sugar. I have begun to walk an 80 lb. dog at least once a day--or should I say, she walks me, and she hates little yappy dogs. My shoulders are quite sore today from holding her back from eating two little yappy dogs. So, this is the beginning. Hey, you gotta start somewhere, right?I love Jesus, but I drink a little. ~Gladys

Re: SoWell on Sowal
My goals:
1) lose about 30
2) get more energy!
3) get in shape!
4) make good nutrition a priority for me and family.
5) make Smiling Joe dance with me
that's it in a nutshell. now, the question is HOW. I'm working on it...

Re: SoWell on Sowal
Just think if we lived near each other we could burn some cals! You could keep your 80 lb dog from eating my 2 yappy dogs! One of which decided the bag of topsoil FBB kept stashed under the Magnolia tree in the back yard, would make a great snack earlier today!

Re: SoWell on Sowal
I used to exercise frequently, but I can't do anything really strenuous right now. I don't need to lose weight, just stretch muscles and firm a little. My doc recommended yoga, but I never have done it, and I can't take a class. (or have the energy right now) so can anyone recommend a good yoga video?

My goal is to get my 30 back off. Had gained to 180lbs back in 98. I blame that on an extended stay in Cajun LA with homemade cajun cooking. I am sure I lost some after coming back home from Louisiana. Hated myself for gaining that much weight. I put myself on a 1200 calorie a day diet back in 2000 and walked every day and lost 50 pounds on my own. I had pretty much kept it off until about 9 months ago and now have gained 30 back. Makes me sick. I worked so hard at getting the weight off and kept it off for about 5 years. I do not eat bad now. I eat alot of salads and vegetables and love grilled and broiled chicken. These cereals like Grape Nut Flakes state that you can lose 10 lbs if you replace two meals with just a bowl of cereal with a 1/2 cup fresh fruit also. Special K I think is one also. Have a regular meal at lunch. I eat cereal for breakfast and alot of times for supper.
