Re: SoWell on Sowal
I was very bad last night because we had dinner at a friend's house and I ate way too much and gained back everything I lost last week. But I took a walk this morning (about 1.5 miles) and ate light today to try to make up some of it. So, I'm back to square one. Oh well...

Re: SoWell on Sowal
Beach Runner, stop that immediately! It doesn't help you lose weight to go on a crash diet like that. What happens is that your body thinks it's starving so it slows down its metabolism to accomodate. If you keep up a week of less than 1000 calories a day, your body will start thinking that's normal so you've defeated the purpose of quick weight loss.
It's healthier to eat at least 1000 calories, drink plenty of water, and step up the exercise a bit. The weight will come off at a good rate that way.Dolce far niente

Re: SoWell on Sowal
Well, hubby will be out of town a lot. It helps my diet.
BTW when he was in Paris last week, someone started knocking on my front door at 5 AM. I called 911. The police didn't find anyone. But it wasn't just a nightmare I had -- Pepper was the first to hear the knocking and woke me up. It took the police 15 minutes to get here. If it had been a home invasion, I would have been dead by the time the police got here. I had hidden the guns for reasons I won't explain but forgot where I hidden them! I found them yesterday. So if Pepper and I hear noises again, I'll be armed. I can't get sued if I shoot an intruder because every entrance to our house has a sign stating, "Owner has gun and will shoot intruders." Our lawyer says that this will cover me against legal repercussion if I have to shoot a home invader. Last time we had a home invader, I had no guns.
So maybe the two extra glasses of wine will calm my anxiety about being alone. BTW we have a burglar alarm that automatically calls the cops if it goes off, but if it takes the cops 15 minutes to get here, I'd be dead before they get here, so the alarm is worthless.Last edited by Beach Runner; 11-12-2006 at 08:51 PM.

Re: SoWell on Sowal
BR, wouldn't it more sensible to stay somewhere else (with Pepper of course) while your husband is gone, if it makes you that anxious to be in the house alone? I wouldn't drink the wine to calm down because that's not the way alcohol works. Whatever your mood is when you start drinking--whether it's a good mood, bad mood, tense, giddy, whatever--the alcohol serves to intensify it. BTW, I learned this from a college class my friend's daughter took.Dolce far niente

BR, when I was a single gull living alone (many moons ago), I took some Karate and woman's self defense classes. It came in handy once, sparing the details and I am glad I took it. There a few simple moves even the lightest of woman can make that can seriously incapacitate someone.

Re: SoWell on Sowal
Thanks for caring. But I don't have anywhere else to stay when he's gone. I don't want to impose on a friend, I have no family members in town, and motels don't take pets. I'm not boarding Pepper.
So it's me protecting me. But the good news is that I can drop LBS while I am in control of what I eat.

Re: SoWell on Sowal
I gained 2.5 pounds since last Monday mostly because of my recent Saturday night dinner out. But, I walked 1.5 miles on Friday, Sunday, and this morning. As I mentioned on an earlier thread, walking 1 mile is about 100 calories and if you exercise off 100 calories each day without taking in more calories it's about a 10 pound loss by the end of a year.
Also, I walk listening to my iPod and I found some great free download of lectures from Stanford. So far, I've listened to one about memory and aging (very interesting and optimistic -- older people have some advantages in terms of memory and emotion over younger people), one on 7 great philosphers and "the good life" (interesting if you want a quick overview of the messages of each of these philosphers -- plato, aristotle), stress, and I'm listening to one now about aging/divorce/caretaking (only listened to 1.5 minutes so far).
I got them for free off of iTunes by searching Stanford downloads. Some speakers are better than others, but I like the ones by a woman named Carstensen. Some are about health, some about history, some about special topics -- it makes my walk go by quite nicely. You can also get the entire download of huckleberry finn which I downloaded but can't bring myself to listening to it yet. I'm more of a "special topics" iPod listener.Paula

Re: SoWell on Sowal
You're right that as a regular diet, that day has too few calories. But it also sounded like a reasonable way to eat for a few days to take off some excess calories from some excess eating. 700-800 calories a day for the long-term are too few. I think it's supposed to be about 1200 calories plus some exercise. But I am impressed with the discipline it takes to get through a day like that!

Re: SoWell on Sowal
I agree. BR - that day of low cal intake was just fine. Occasionally, it helps to keep the calorie count very low just to kind of shrink that belly, cleanse your body, and get in the mode of eating to live (instead of our eating with gusto every single day mentality). But, its true that you can't keep that up on a regularl basis or you inadvertently kill your metabolism which is the last thing you need to do at your age (or I should say our collective ages).
I completely understand about being able to eat just a little while hubby is away. no one makes me eat a lot when hubby is around, but I tend to do just that...
he has commented that perhaps my small stature would indicate that I should take in less food than he does - and I just say he's a-hole...
in a good way of course.

Re: SoWell on Sowal
I really couldn't stay on that diet very long, but it's good for a few days to see some success on the scales for motivational reasons.
I've talked to a lot of women about this -- we'll eat whatever leftovers are in the refrigerator, but our menfolks wouldn't do this. Typically if we're not particularly hungry and I don't want to cook and we don't want to bother going out or getting takeout, I'll admit that my husband is a good sport about it and will just have popcorn. In this situation I usually eat cheese or whatever. But if he's hungry, he doesn't want just an omelet or a can of soup for dinner.
My husband has been a good sport about my no carbs on Sunday through Thursday.
Yesterday we had roasted chicken and a salad for dinner.

Reporting in sowell wenches:
my diet continues to suck.
but I did exercise yesterday - went to a wonderful class that was half tai chi and half yoga. it was the perfect workout for me. the tai chi was beautiful, graceful yet powerful with squatting, lunges, twists and elegant arm movements. then the yoga was a series of stretching and strengthing poses. loved it.
I am excited about checking out Jill's new One Yoga studio this saturday morning!!!

Re: SoWell on Sowal
Maintaining is a very good thing. that way, when you are motivated to do more, you are still at a good starting place - not like starting over. we can all start anew after the holidays. with our new year's resolutions to "reinvent" ourselves. maybe we can pick an online photo of the person we want to become and put it on our 'tar or sig. ha ha ha ha ha.

Re: SoWell on Sowal
Warning: I went to the Thai Elephant for dinner last night and ordered (and ate) the half order of steamed Duck. As it turns out, it is actually half a duck, not half an order. My belly looks like I ate the whole duck, feathers and all.
That said, I did have a rather vigorous workout yesterday, so the duck will soon be burned off. (insert smilie wiping sweat from forehead with the back of his hand.)
By the way, I sampled several items from other's plates and everything was delicious, especially the whole Snapper! Thai Elephant is located in the strip center with Cancun's, located across the street and a little west of McDonald's on Hwy 98 in Destin.

Re: SoWell on Sowal
and why my little duck-stuffed SJ are you posting this on sowell? do we need another restaurant to try? to the Dining forum!!!
seriously though, I've heard good things about Thai Elephant lately. We tried it a long time ago and did not enjoy the food at all. But, lately I've heard really good things about it. we need to give it another try.

Re: SoWell on Sowal
You make a good point about posting my post in this thread. I guess it was primarily a warning that to be careful when eating foods that taste so good, because stomachs have a tendency to throw that portion control philosophy out the window. I knew other people would ask where the Thai Elephant was located, so I saved the back and forth chatter and gave the full details.
The warning comes at a time when we can make a lot of difference in our health. The holiday cooking is already underway, and we will have the opportunity to shake things up and eat healthy. The other option is to say to ourselves that it is just this one meal exception, even though we know that is a lie. We will be tempted by many sweets, and unhealthy foods, like ham
or Fried Turkey
, but we do have a choice to avoid those items by eliminating them from our Traditional Thanksgiving and Christmas cooking.
I know some of you are cussing me out right now, but making the right choices on our dietary intake over the next 45 days can make a huge difference in our health, and can eliminate the need for working so hard at trying to get in shape for swimsuit season.
The choices are ours to make.
(note: I am speaking to myself in the mirror, but thought I would share my thoughts with you of internal battles between my stomach and mind.
).

Re: SoWell on Sowal
You do make a good point SJ. Choices, it is all about choices. It is hard to have the willpower this time of the year to make good choices. For me, and I speak only for myself it is like a drug addict trying to avoid falling off the wagon. It is a daily struggle to make good choices when it comes to eating healthy. Some days I do good. Some days I don't. I have to take it one day at a time.
I have been doing that for weeks now. It ain't easy.~If Life is a journey....the BEACH should be the destination!~

Re: SoWell on Sowal
Portion control! This is what seriously sucks about the holidays. If we were to over-eat one good thanksgiving meal, then who cares? But, that isn't the case. It is one wonderful meal after another until new years day, is it not?
Thanks SJ for the pep talk. I wish I could say that I would change my ways, maybe I can just a little? When the food is so wonderful and comforting, your brain just shuts off and your stomach is in charge...
maybe if we ate MORE thanksgiving feasts throughout the year, say once a quarter, or even more often, to really enjoy and savor food with family and friends (I mean a big dinner gathering). perhaps we would satisfy our need for celebrating life (and giving thanks) with food and friends... and learn to do so with gusto but more control... instead we tend to save it all up for the holiday season.
-
Re: SoWell on Sowal
One way to handle the portion thing is instead of cooking a turkey and a ham, cook only a chicken or two depending on the number of people attending. Same thing with the desserts, instead of cooking cakes and pies, maybe cook one pie and cut into slivers for portions. No leftovers to snack on. Also, many people like to make salads filled with mayo, but instead try some Spinach greens with Olive Oil and Balsamic vinegar, and don't bring out the hot foods until everyone finishes the salad. I know that may be difficult, but the stomach controls the serving hand, and will turn down Spinach Salad for Stuffing every time.
Just tossing out some ideas. Take the ones you like and let the others fly by.

Ok - the good news is I lost another 8 lbs., but the bad news is that I lost it after having some outpatient surgery last week and my digestive system appears to be out of whack now. Not the right way to lose weight. On top of that, I couldn't exercise for several days afterwards and now I just feel weak and achy all over. Ugh - I SOOOOO need to get back into healthy living. Not the right time of year to be feeling so out of control.
