Boys and Girls club new location almost ready
By Joyce Owen
Behind the Coastal Branch Library in the Government and Education Complex off U.S. Highway 331, three trailers are being readied as temporary facilities for the Boys and Girls Club of the Emerald Coast. Since the single trailer that housed the Boys and Girls Club on County Road 30A was moved, there’s been little news when activities for the after-school program would resume.
Someone is at the site taking applications and registering children, Karen Reynolds of the Boys and Girls Club office in Fort Walton Beach said.
“We are getting ready to run the program,” Reynolds said.
Reynolds hoped the facilities could be inspected and ready to go by Nov. 1.
“They (workers) are out there doing stuff everyday,” Stephanie Rhoden, site director for the South Walton Boys and Girls Club, said in a telephone interview on Oct. 25.
In a visit to the jobsite Wednesday, construction workers were completing handrails and stairs for the trailers. The parking lot had not been paved, but paving equipment was onsite.
Rhoden said she would contact newspapers and put flyers in the schools when the date for the opening was confirmed.
Although five children have already registered, there’s room for 35 to 40 elementary-aged students in the program that offers homework time, educational and athletic activities. Families interested in registering for the program should contact Rhoden at (850) 862-1616 to request an application.
