I hate cats, and I really hate New Orleans
I really hate New Orleans, because I think I now have a cat because of this place. I go outside tonight to let the dogs do their business. There is this pitiful looking skinny black cat...well, actually it's more of a big kitten. I tried to shoo it away. It ran into the hot water heater shelter in the back of Skunk's house. From the way it wedged itself between the two heaters I could tell it was a habit. It's keeping warm tonight the best way it can, I guess. I little later, I go to take out the trash. The cat tries to get in the house. Well, the city is gross and full of strays and rats and I can't let it in, but it breaks my heart to leave it outside on such a cold night. I put out a little dog food for the cat, and he came and ate it without a moment's hesitation. And now I can't stop thinking about that poor little cat.

oh rapunzy, I wish I could come and rescue you or come and play in the city.
I am a cat person so I would just have myself a new cat, (I may would lose a husband over it
). I dont know what to tell you to do except that you can not save every animal that is in trouble. How are the chickens???

Re: I hate cats, and I really hate New Orleans
So sad. From the sound of your story, I don't think you really hate cats. It makes me sad to think of all the stray animals everywhere, especially NO.

Re: I hate cats, and I really hate New Orleans
There's one thing about cats Rapunzy and that is they are extremely resilient and self reliant. They find places to sleep, and they do find food. I am sure there are plenty of mice and rats to catch.
However, once you feed them, they will never leave.
My Pippi, a calico cat, and Roobie, a tabby, are testament to that.
So if the cat is living in Skunkys water heater, you have 2 choices.
Shoo him away now. Once they find a place to bed down, they stay.
If you continue feeding the cat, and leave it outside, get it vaccinated, fixed, and use front-line on it so it, doesn't cause a flea or tick infestation in the area it's living come Springtime.
Good luck, I know its difficult when you see an animal in need.
I never understood why this country doesn't ship some of these cats to Europe. There are waiting lists for them in countries like England and Holland.Last edited by Mango; 12-02-2006 at 10:36 PM.

Re: I hate cats, and I really hate New Orleans
I did take out the trash! Can somebody please explain how I have 2 dogs, and at least 8 chickens to look after? We do not need a cat
Maybe I will bring it to a place where it is needed, like outside Bud and Alley's
Anybody need some roosters or hens?

Just leave the cat around, don't feed it, problem solved.

Re: I hate cats, and I really hate New Orleans
Katrina fowl, or so I was told. An old man kept a hen house in the neighborhood (yes, this is true) and one of the last things he did before evacuating (and never being heard from again) was opening the cages so the birds could fend for themselves. Well, they did pretty well in the storm and are now getting FAT on some feed Rapunzy bought for them. Oh, and spoiled too;the biggest rooster comes to the front door and crows at about 6AM until he is fed
They also raid the neighbors cat food, and trust me, those cats don't dare do anything about it-those roosters have spurs that would send those kitties running

Re: I hate cats, and I really hate New Orleans
Do they lay eggs? What was he going to do with them? What are y'all going to do with them?
Skunky, is NO in total disarray? I have heard that the French Quarter is business as usual, that you would never know anything had happened, but what about everything else?

Re: I hate cats, and I really hate New Orleans
SJ, you make me homesick!
First things first, Skunky is a liar. He did not take out the trash. He was working the 12pm-12am shift in the ER last night. But even if he had been here he wouldn't have taken out the trash because he is one of those men that only empties the trash when the can will no longer shut even when he sits on the lid.
Second, the chickens were not doing just fine. They were scrawny and bedraggled and they did have to fight with the cats for the cat food. The rooster had no problems, but they'd chase the baby rooster and the hens off. It was a sad thing to see. I bought a 25 lb. bag of feed for $5, and it lasted them three months. In those three months, they have turned into shiny, healthy chickens and the roosters have beautiful red combs now. It is facsinating to watch them sort out the pecking order. Two new roosters and two new hens have joined the group that used to be four hens, a baby rooster, and a rooster. They all sleep in a big oak tree across the street at night, and they even have a certain order they have to follow about who gets in the tree first. As far as eggs go, I haven't seen any. I think roosting in a tree is probably going to present a problem as far as egg laying goes. Plus, they need ground oyster shell and things, and I haven't gotten that into poultry-rearing...yet.
As for the cat, he was nowhere to be seen this morning. Skunky probably took him to the LASP gas chamber last night.

Re: I hate cats, and I really hate New Orleans
Oh goodness, this reminds me of my childhood in New Hampshire! Our backyard looked just like the photo, thanks to the "adorable and fluffy" poultry creatures my brother brought home from the feed store one spring. He promised my mother that all 24 of them were going to turn into fine, upstanding, egg-laying chickens and whaddya know, every damn one of them turned out to be roosters.
They all had happy lives until my parents got annoyed that roosters weren't on daylight savings time. Being crowed awake at an ungodly hour sealed their fate and my father chopped their heads off.
We once had four cats in our house because I'm too tender-hearted when it comes to little furry waifs, so Rapunzey, you have my full sympathy (and you too Dr. Skunky).Dolce far niente

Re: I hate cats, and I really hate New Orleans
what an interesting thread - cats and chickens in the city of NO, skunky said he took out the garbage but lied about it, punzy is fattening up roosters and stray cats but hates NO. well, at least you two get to have some time together... enjoy

Re: I hate cats, and I really hate New Orleans
Dear Punzy,
Can you get rid of the cats when we come for Mardi Gras? I'm terribly allergic. My sneezing over and over is super annoying. Maybe I'll pay to have them boarded?
Always looking out for number one,

Re: I hate cats, and I really hate New Orleans
Still no sign of the cat, but three of the four roosters are crowing. I'm afraid the neighbors are going to pull a Mermaid Dad soon. It's not even dawn!

Re: I hate cats, and I really hate New Orleans
And for the record, I don't hate New Orleans. I love the city, I hate how it feels to live there right now. I hate that an apartment that Skunky had on his list when he had to find a new place to live on 10 days notice back in August was rented to another couple...and that couple had a knock on their door at the crack of dawn Friday and when they opened it the guy shot the wife dead immediately, tried to rob the husband, then shot him three times as he held their baby. It terrifies me to think how easily that could have been me or Skunky. I hate the murders, the sadness and stress written on every face, the communal anxiety. And even as I write this, I feel terrible because I know it might keep someone from visiting, and that is the best way to make things better sooner.
And I hate that something terrible happened to Big Rooster, Junior, and Dumb Rooster (so named because he'd bolt for the house if the door was opened, while the other chickens actually looked for cars before crossing).Last edited by rapunzel; 01-08-2007 at 02:30 AM.

Re: I hate cats, and I really hate New Orleans
Your story reminds me of how easily it is to forget the problems of that city. Maybe toursim will increase and crime will decrease. Glad you are safe.
People will forget what you said.
People will forget what you did.
But people will never forget how you made them feel.

I must have missed something...where did the chickens come in?
Chickens? Please explain that one. Are you expecting a famine?
They have spunk those roosters.
