Sacred Heart Hospital Community Education Classes in Feb

Join community education classes and support group meetings at Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast in Feb. Topics include stroke and breast-cancer support, diabetes management and quit smoking now classes , as well as seminars on finance, healthy living and driver safety for senior adults. The award-winning hospital also hosts community blood drives, including wellness checks, once a month in collaboration with OneBlood.

AARP Driver Safety Class | Feb. 6
AARP’s Driver Safety Program will help participants learn current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques and how to operate vehicles more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment.
 
The next Driver Safety Class will be Friday, Feb. 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at Sacred Heart on the Emerald Coast Resource Center, Suite 3. To register, call (850) 416-1620 or 1-877-416-1620. Cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members.
 
 
Stroke Support Group | Feb. 9
All stroke survivors, caregivers and family members are invited to attend the monthly Stroke Support Group at Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast to learn more about stroke Feb. 9 at 3 p.m. in the Suite 3 Conference Room. Mia Lawson, Speech Language Pathologist, will be leading the game-day challenge for comprehension and communication skills.
 
Facilitated by Teri Hinckley, Physical Therapist from the Sacred Heart Rehabilitation Department, the Stroke Support Group gives survivors and caregivers an opportunity to share their experiences and gain strength and knowledge from others who have been through a similar event. "Look Good, Feel Better” Workshop | Feb. 9
On Feb. 9 from 5-7 p.m., the Sacred Heart Cancer Center is hosting Look Good, Feel Better, a free beauty workshop designed to help women combat the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment.  Participants should meet at Sacred Heart Cancer Center adjacent to Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast at 27 Mack Bayou Loop in Santa Rosa Beach. Participants must register through the American Cancer Society by calling (800) 227-2345.
 
Skin Cancer: Diagnosis and Treatment Seminar | Feb. 10
Dermatologist Dr. Michael Stickler will discuss diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer Feb. 10 at Noon at Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast in the Suite 3 Conference Room. Lunch will be provided and free skin-cancer spot checks will be available to participants after the seminar. The seminar is free, but registration is required. Questions to Ask Your Financial Advisor Seminar | Feb. 16
Not all tax preparers or financial advisors are created equal. Learn questions to ask when seeking advice, and learn how a financial advisor and tax professional working together can benefit you! The seminar will take place Monday, Feb. 16 at 10 a.m. in the The Family Birth Place, Second-floor Education Room, at Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast. Seating is limited. Sacred Heart Breast-Cancer Support Group | Feb. 17
Breast cancer patients and survivors are invited to join the monthly breast-cancer support group meeting at Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. in the Olson Women’s Diagnostic Center. The February guest speaker will be Ken Roman, a local community yoga and meditation instructor.
 
The mission of the support group is to empower breast-cancer patients and survivors through education, spirituality, support and humor. Benefits of joining a cancer-support group include an increased self-esteem, enhanced sense of community, and the joy of giving and receiving encouragement and hope. Sacred Heart Blood Drive | Feb. 18
Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast will host the Oneblood mobile unit on Wednesday, Feb. 18, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the main entrance of the hospital. Donating one unit of blood can help save three lives! All donors will receive a free t-shirt and a meal ticket to the hospital’s café. Oneblood will also provide a free wellness check for all blood donors, including blood pressure, temperature, iron count and cholesterol screening.
 
The Anterior Approach to Hip Replacement Surgery Seminar | Feb. 19
Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Thomas Fox will discuss “The Anterior Approach to Hip Replacement Surgery” Feb. 19 at Noon at Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast in the Suite 3 Conference Room. Heart Health and You Seminar | Feb. 24
Dr. Charles Mayes, Interventional Cardiologist, with Dr. Stephan Phlaum and Dr. Angel Morrobel, Cardiologists, will host a Heart Health and You seminar Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. at Tommy Bahama, 525 Grand Boulevard in Miramar Beach. Guests are invited participate in a Q & A with the physicians. Sacred Heart Medical Group Cardiovascular Specialists is sponsoring the event, which includes heavy hors d’oeurves and wine. Alzheimer’s Support Group | Feb. 24
The Covenant Alzheimer’s Support Group meets on the last Tuesday of every month from 2 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. in the Suite 3 Education Center at Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast. Questions You’ve Always Wanted to Ask Your Cardiologist Seminar | Feb. 25
Sacred Heart Senior Spirit program hosts its February Healthy Living Seminar featuring Dr. Stephen Phlaum, Cardiologist with Sacred Heart Medical Group. “Questions You’ve Always Wanted to Ask Your Cardiologist,” is the topic, and Dr. Phlaum will answer questions posed by seminar participants. The free community-education seminar will be Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2015, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast Resource Center, Suite 3 Conference Room. Quit Smoking Now Class | Feb. 25
“Quit Smoking Now” is a comprehensive tobacco cessation program that combines group support and Nicotine Replacement therapy in a 6-week program led by a Tobacco Treatment Specialist. Meetings are an hour and occur once a week for the duration of the 6-week program. During the program, participants learn about managing tobacco addiction, coping with withdrawal symptoms, how to prevent relapse, as well as how to manage stress through lifestyle changes.
 
The 6-week series of classes begin Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 5:30 p.m., and continues each Wednesday night through April 1 in the Suite 1 Education Building at Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast. Diabetes Self-Management Class | Feb. 25
Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast invites you to join the next diabetes self-management class on Wednesday, Feb. 25, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The class will take place in the Resource Center Suite 1 Education Building at Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast. 
 
Led by Jenny Stuckey, registered nurse and certified diabetes educator, and Anne Townley, registered dietician and certified diabetes educator, the class is open to adults with diabetes who are looking for ways to manage their disease. Key topics include exercise, medication and nutrition for patients to reduce the symptoms of diabetes. Physician referral and pre-registration are required to attend the class. Most major insurance plans are accepted.
