Where is your favorite beach location, other than Sowal?

Hey everyone, this is Cil who used to live at Port St Joe. Now I live on Amelia Island (but in Fernandina Beach rather than the fancypants south end of the island. ;) Just adding to this thread for future reference: I've been to most of the other places mentioned in this thread because...

Cutest dog's hair clippings, used for oil crisis!

I have been thinking about you guys back near my old stomping grounds. Our Beau did his part too. The puppy just watched. I sent the box off today.

Video - whale sharks at Grayton Beach, Florida

Beautiful! I love how a creature so large can have such grace and dignity. Thanks for the headsup.

St Joe stock appears to rebounding, why?

Yes. My husband has landed on his feet. As for double the money and 3 times the rework, that has never happened to my spouse--you paint with rather a broad brush. Hmmm indeed. Very strategic. ;-)

Many of whom are now laid off. Rummell did okay for himself, though. He's working for Jack Nicklaus now.

    Foie Gras available

I think Chicago knows what you mean; apparently Richard Daley changed his mind. In the link in my previous post about the repealing of the law, the title of the article included the phrase 'Silliest Law Ever' Forcefeeding is cruel, but you can create foie gras without resorting to it. It...

    Foie Gras available

Yeah, I don't eat veal myself, even though supposedly not *all* calves lead horrid lives separated from mom before all-too-soon becoming dinner. And I only rarely eat foie gras, but I do love it. My kid toured several "humane" (non-force-fed) foie gras places in France and said that the ducks...

    Tropical Storm Fay

That's what I was saying Wednesday over here on the northeast side. The rains didn't really hit until Thursday, worsened Friday, also yesterday we were dodging tornadoes. Be careful out there, they haven't called Fay the Joker for nothing.

    Tropical Storm Fay

It's been blowing purty good here all day. No school today or tomorrow. We lost our power a couple hours ago and went down to the beach to see what was going on. We were pelted with rain, salt and sand, paid our respects to Mother Nature, and returned home to see the power back on.

    Tropical Storm Fay

Noles I cut-and-pasted this for my kid. He is actually a good kid, way better than his big brother was, but still. I am kinda freaked out about this whole thing. In some ways it's the waiting around that makes it worse than actually dealing with it.

    Tropical Storm Fay

Yeah, I had bought one of those when we moved to Port St Joe. Got it at Target. I finally found it again last week. The bleepin' thing didn't work anymore, not with hand crank, not with fresh batteries. ::sigh::

    Tropical Storm Fay

I can't remember what site it was, but I was looking at hurricane stats for Jacksonville and basically it said we were due for a major storm before the end of 2009. With our governor declaring a state of emergency, I guess somebody somewhere in our state is expecting some weather...

Win a home in WindMark Beach

St Joe Bay really is a treasure. I spent the winter of '07 renting right on the bay and used to walk that very beach every morning. I've been in that house, too. Gorgeous pool.

Is there anything cool to do in or around Apalachicola?

That would be a lo-ong day. There are no changing facilities as far as I know. A boy was fishing off Cape San Blas about 3 years ago and lost his leg to a shark. A kid on my son's soccer team got his foot nipped by a bull shark while surfing; he was on the bench for the rest of the soccer...

Not to mention the bull sharks.

Coastal Drilling - For or Against?

Oil shale is another thing altogether. It is sedimentary rock. It might be worth attempting, but extracting the crude is no minor undertaking. And once extracted, it is not oil. It is this stuff called kerogen. These guys seem to have it all figured out...

Coastal Drilling - For or Against?

I've read/heard that the black tar off Santa Barbara is a *naturally-occurring* event. I was at Santa Barbara a few years ago and didn't see it, but a friend of mine was just there last week, and she and her husband not only saw it, they became covered with it. Their hotel room was stocked with...

Coastal Drilling - For or Against?

My understanding is that China is *not* drilling for oil in the Gulf. http://www.miamiherald.com/campaign08/story/567156.html But now our governor supports drilling. http://www.miamiherald.com/campaign08/story/573350.html This attitude seems so short-sighted to me. As others have...

    Port St. Joe vacation

The Old Saltworks looked pretty rustic to me, but I guess that works for pre-adolescent boys. Pristine Realty might have a nice rental, as well. I am sure the state park cabins are rented, but I guess it doesn't hurt to at least ask. People would always tell me that the flies or skeeters...

    Wolf on 30A

One yearling did escape in 2007, but they quickly captured him (humanely!). I think the wildlife service sends the yearlings to other locations on a regular basis, but this guy had been eager to find new territory on his own. We could hear them yip-yipping on occasion when we lived in Port St...

    Ironman movie

There is Baby Mama (Tina Fey.) I'll probably wait for the rentals for that one. Chronicles of Narnia opens today. So does Speed Racer. I loved Emile Hirsch in Into the Wild, but obviously Speed Racer is a completely different film (made by the guys who did the Matrix.) I liked Iron Man...

    Favorite Brand of Coffee

Kona is really good coffee indeed--especially if you get the full thing and not just a blend. Sumatra is one of my all-time favorite beans: rich and smooth. But mostly I am buying whatever the sale of the month is at KofeHaus. Since this is a coffee thread, I thought I'd mention something...

Cheap Grouper on the Menu? Give it a Close Look

Yes, the "Panhandle businessman" in the article might be Danny Nguyen in Panama City who was busted (and fined heavily) a year ago. I think he's serving time, too. And after that, my little Port St Joe Piggly Wiggly had to do some quick rearranging of their "Grouper" labels. The stuff they were...

JOE restructures - 750 positions affected

    Red Tide?

FWIW I know we are in a completely different area, but... Something's happening over in my neck of the woods, as well. Went to the beach yesterday morning, did not smell anything at all, but saw lots of dead fish. Then Elwood (the dog) began sneezing. Then I began sneezing and coughing...

    beach goers harrassed

I hope y'all get it figured out. Who owns the shoreline (and what is to be done with it) is probably an issue of one sort or another all over the world. There was a big stink over here (actually, St Augustine) a couple weeks ago about beach weddings; beachfront property owners were...

    Rolling Stones Collection

Thanks John. Eventually I found my way to the right spot. Sorry for the hijack, joho, and good luck! About the matchbox, are you talking about, um, like the stuff that the Grateful Dead used to occasionally throw from the stage at their concerts?

    Rolling Stones Collection

I only paid $5 for the '72 Stones concert. But all I have is a stub. Stubs are all I have, period. And the memories. ;-) Wolfgang's Vault used to stream music for free, looks like that got shut down, and now you have to pay $10 for downloads. Well I guess that's fair, I never paid all that...
