Need some recommendations for good kid-friendly activities/restaurants near Seagrove?

Hi all! We're trying to resume our yearly trip to SoWal.. haven't been down since 2008, for a few different reasons. So, I just booked a condo for Sept. 3-10. Can't wait to get back down to those beautiful beaches! I'm just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for kid...

    Need cheap last-minute.. Aug. 18-25

Thank you! Could you tell me which building your condo is in? I'm trying to stay as close to the beach as possible. If I can't find something closer, though, I'll definitely consider yours! You have a beautiful place.

    Need cheap last-minute.. Aug. 18-25

I know my chances are probably very small of finding what we're looking for.. but we've worked things out so we may be able to come down that week, if we can find a rental at the right price. It's just me and hubby this year, so we are looking for a 1 BR (or even a studio would work)...

Our beaches - at least they won't explode!

I dunno.. I think the turtles would be happy if someone started a rumor that digging big holes in the sand might make you blow up? :idontno:

    Any suggestions?

The Newport Aquarium (just across the river from Cincinnati) is a good place to see, also. It would be a great 2 hour or so stop, if the kids are getting rowdy..

    Any suggestions?

If they stop in Louisville, the Slugger museum/factory tour is a good way to kill a few hours. Hope they have fun!

    Any suggestions?

I don't think Detroit-Louisville is 10 hours.. more like 6, unless you stop every half hour. Mapquest shows the drive as 5 hours, 50 mins. Then, Birmingham is about 6 hours from Louisville.. SoWal maybe another 5?

Dining with senior parents on 30A

We brought my 62 yr old mom with us on this last trip. While she's not exactly elderly, she still has problems with large crowds and loud music/people. We ate at Yianni's, and she loved it. We did sit in the smaller room (not the one with the bar), and got there a little later on a weeknight...

    Don't Eat The Spinach!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I tried to order a spinach salad with hot bacon dressing tonight. Couldn't get it. And no other salad sounded good. It is weird, you'd think the current problem would make spinach salad sound gross, but no...

    Don't Eat The Spinach!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's surprising, considering the source of most fertilizer. How do they get around contaminating ALL crops when they use fertilizer?

    Don't Eat The Spinach!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

okay, just have to share.. someone on fark.com came up with the following.. I'm Popeye the sailor man. I cr*p and don't wash my hands. My strength is diminished cuz I ate the spinach. I'm Popeye the sailor man! (try not to sing it in your head)

    More sadness on Hwy 331

Can I just add three words? SAFE FOLLOWING DISTANCE. I don't think that anyone drives by the two-second rule anymore. And I hate to say it, but I did notice that people in SoWal (and PCB, especially) are even worse than the drivers up here. I'm not sayin' it's the locals.. more likely tourists...

Need some advice about dishwasher damage

I have to agree.. if it was malicious or negligent damage that was done, I'd be all for charging the renter. This sounds like an accident, though. Maybe you have a model that is confusing to latch, so they tried to force it? And I second the Sears recommendation.. my mom has always bought from...

    Activities for "old ladies" ??

IBD.. thanks for the suggestions! We've been trying to convince mother-in-law to come with us for four years now.. finally succeeded! I just want to make sure she has a really good time. And we have already (thanks to this board!) added Fired Up as a must-visit for this year. :) Does anyone...

    Activities for "old ladies" ??

Their words, not mine.. My mother and mother-in-law are coming with us on this trip. One is 56, the other is 62. Neither drinks more than the VERY occasional glass of wine, and they don't particularly care for crowds of people, really loud music, or smoky bars. Other than shopping, I...

    Appetizer good for hot weather

Not quite so fancy, but VERY quick.. mix together chilled cocktail sauce and a package of those tiny salad shrimp, then pour over a block of cream cheese and serve with crackers. About 2 minutes prep time, which makes it very easy to make more!

    3rd week in August (12-19)

What's up with this week? Not that I'm complaining, since this is the week we always come down there, and I like a quiet beach.. but nearly EVERY rental that I've looked at online has been available for that week. I know this is the week that the kiddies go back to school, but suretly that's...

anyone want our chairs/umbrellas GONE THANKS

OK, here's a question for the owners on the board. We always buy chairs and umbrellas while we're down there. Usually not the expensive kind, since we never seem to have room in the car on the trip home. Should we just leave these items at the unit, for the next renters to use if they want...

    Beachcrest or One Seagrove Place??

We generally stay in a condo in a smaller complex around that area. Just my opinion, but I prefer not staying in the "high-rise" buildings, the beach is always more crowded near them. But if that's what you like, then it's good. We've stayed for the past couple of years in Beachside Condos...

Seaside - video clip from the morning of Mar 27 2006

Oh, believe me, if there was any way, we'd be there. Seawalls be damned. Hubby and I have been together five years and haven't missed a year of Seagrove yet, but I think that this might have to be the year. :( It's not a matter of priorities, it's a matter of finances..

    Beachside Condos - Just booked

We've stayed at Beachside for the last two years, and loved it. We stayed last August (after all the storms, except Katrina), and the beach wasn't too bad. If you didn't look back at the dunes, you wouldn't know anything had happened. (well, that, and the bulldozers we had to dodge, but I'm sure...

    Surf

I don't know if it was flies or mosquitoes, but something was eating the h*ll out of us down there. I have about 50 (literally) bites on my legs. Worst seemed to be out back at the Red Bar.. we were all smacking all over ourselves as soon as we walked out there. Maybe water got trapped under...

    Kind of a stupid question...

We saw a few people get busted for bottles on the beach while we were down last week. I don't know if they got cited, but the sheriff made them take the glass bottles back up. Honestly, though, wouldn't anyone realize that glass on a beach is probably a bad idea?

Good ideas! We usually don't use a flashlight on the beach, but I do have a military-issue flashlight with the red and green filters.. might have to pack it. See ya this week!

    Tent question

Okay, are tents just totally frowned upon, or just if they're set up in the dunes or left on the beach overnight? Cuz.. my sister wants to bring a small one to set up for the 1-year old so she'll have a shady place to play.. if we take it down each day, is that all right, or will we wind up...

Beachside is very close. It's pretty much across the street from Bruno's pizza. That's where we're staying next week (Beachside, not Bruno's, but you never know) so I'm sure we'll see you out there.

Dumb question about the black "sand" on the beaches..

Check out this thread.. Seaside and Seagrove damage/access - SoWal Beaches Forum Looks like the access at Dunes of Seagrove is still down. Not sure what your options are, maybe someone else will know? We'll be there that week too, btw! Not looking forward to the 11+ hour drive, but it'll be...

Dumb question about the black "sand" on the beaches..

What is it, exactly? Is it safe for a 1-year old to be playing in? (showing my ignorance here..) Also, how's the water/beach around the Seagrove area? Is it fairly clear, or does it still look like this? (sorry for the HUGE pic at the link..)

Dennis - Beach Accesses - post here

I have to agree.. I think there's been SOME attempt at educating people, but obviously not nearly enough.. one of the agents AT OUR RENTAL COMPANY told us that there was a cut in the dune we could use to access the beach, if the beach walkover wasn't fixed yet. And didn't someone mention that at...
