    Mack Bayou area

Brush fire. Spreading quickly due to the wind. A little scary since the worst of it is right behind the neighbor with the big survival capsule - ocean freight container full of weapons.

    Male Peacock

Well this peacock now has a new home in our neighbors screened pool enclosure. Not sure why he'd want to keep a big bird in such a small area, but then I'm also not sure why this neighbor has a "survival capsule," made from a big shipping container, in his backyard.

    Male Peacock

I heard that one of my neighbors caught it and is keeping it in their screened lanai.

If you lost your peacock, he's wandering around Driftwood Estates peeking in doors and windows looking for food.

Do any owners not provide gas grills?

We provide a gas grill. Had renters bring a charcoal grill once. Our pool deck and carpeting were covered with black footprints when they left.

    Mission...Playpark in SoWal!!

I was sure hoping the county park they built in Driftwood would be similar, but it didn't end up that way. The playground is big enough for about six 2-4 year olds, with 3 swings for bigger kids. There is a basketball court and lots of grassy space for running around in, but I was sure hoping...

    Polka Dot Wasp

They hang around oleaners since the caterpillars feed on the oleander. My neighbor planted oleanders and now our house gets covered with the caterpillars and their brown hairy-looking cocoons.

Wonderful Video of Red Wolves in SoWal

When I posted this earlier it was just to put faces to the "evil creatures" that were being discussed in that post. Hoping that it would soften their hearts a bit. I do believe they are Red Wolves, although I was told by some US Fish & Wildlife biologists that they could only be a mix of Red...

Anyone else finding guns left behind by renters?

Twice now renters have left their gun behind for the next family's kid to discover. Luckily it hasn't come to that yet. The first was a BB gun pistol stashed under the matress, which we discovered while cleaning, and I quickly unloaded throughout the neighborhood  The second gun was real...

We picked quite a few blueberries today. Felt bad leaving so many still on the bushes, but we needed to go clean the rental. We'll have to take our buckets back out tomorrow.

Garbage Pickup in SoWal- anybody else having problems?

They came today, a day late. Last week they either came late or missed one of the days, but I can't remember. I was wondering if they changed the schedule. I'm in Driftwood Estates.

Accident on Mack Bayou Rd Yesterday Afternoon

When I drove by the little white pickup was hanging upside down. Not sure how they could get airborne driving down a straight road. While repairing the power line, power was out for several hours all up Mack Bayou including Driftwood Estates. There was another nasty accident right after that one...

Black Bear spotted in Pt Washington!

Humans don't seem to coexist well with any animals. If that bear decides to hang around someone will get him. We had a beaver move into Driftwood Estates last year. I thought that was odd, but was excited about it. It took down a few trees, built nice home, and did it's best to remain...

Is SoWal ready for it's own miniature golf course?

We like The Track in Destin, but it seems that whenever we decide to go they're not open. We don't like to go when it's busy, and I guess they don't like to be open when it's not.

What Can We Do to Help our Community during the Economic "hard times"

I'd like to see these empty lots that are found in so many of the new communities turned into neighborhood gardens. When I was a kid in the Chicago suburbs we did this. Take a chunk of land, divide it up, run some irrigation and let people have a garden to grow their own veggies. One thing we'd...

    Religion in schools

How about if everyone quits talking about it and ask God that if he does exist, could he please show up in school and make it a better place. That way no body's pushing anything on anyone. No use sitting around praying for things to get better, ask God to do it and then go ahead and start doing...

Driftwood Estates, Front Page Focus in "Sun" again!

I'm just hoping they open the other access so our family can ride our bikes over to Baytowne without having to throw the bikes over the fence. We've added a child and throwing the bike trailer over is a little more awkward.

    How dangerous are the coyotes?

I keep seeing postings about wandering dogs. Don't forget that we're in the midst of the coyote breeding season. Coyotes mate for life, but dogs will go after anything in heat. Small dogs look like foxes -- coyotes kill or chase off foxes since they compete for the same rodents. Big dogs may or...

    How dangerous are the coyotes?

I think we humans do the same thing. We built 500 homes around one little 36 acre piece of woods and called it a natural area.

    How dangerous are the coyotes?

That video footage was all shot from an upstairs window, so they had no clue they were being watched. Plus, I could keep the camera steadier. Any time someone would come by on foot, bike or car, they'd dash into the woods. With my binoculars I could spot their noses peeking through the bushes...

    How dangerous are the coyotes?

With 9 mouths to feed, I'm guessing they did whatever they could. I know they hunted as a pack, and we knew when they were successful. The woods would be full of the sound of celebration -- howling, barking, whining, all kinds of eerie sounds. I saw a couple of them go after a deer. It was...

    How dangerous are the coyotes?

I thought I'd share some video to put faces to the names. This is part of the gang that's been eliminated from Sandestin. I had the pleasure of enjoying this beautiful family of nine for 6 months before they moved on to Sandestin. They were loved and protected here...

    2009 Bookings

I've seen more people interested in booking earlier than usual. I usually don't see inquiries til Jan. or Feb. but then book up real fast. Theme Park and Animal Kingdom Planned for Bonifay

Fowler had still been talking about plans on his own. Blue Dolphin II has moved on without him on a similar park, but not sharing its location. There had been talk of folks taking each other to court. That's the news I've read over the last year. The Blue Dolphin folks recently updated their...

    Watch your step (snakes)!

This must be the time of year for wolf spiders. They've been hanging out right outside our doors after dark, and I've been finding at least two a day inside. They're all about the size of a quarter. I've noticed that black widows like to hang out on either side of the garage door (in the...
