Preparing Flowers
An assistant plays a large role in flower and arrangement preparation. You will handle flowers and supplies as they arrive at the shop, unwrap the flowers, strip excess foliage, thorns and dead petals, give flowers and foliage a fresh cut, prepare buckets with water and refrigerate the flowers.
Creating Arrangements and Helping Customers
Containers, vases and bowls are prepared before flower arrangement begins. A an assistant you will do tasks such as soaking the floral foam that's hidden at the center of an arrangement with water, applying a grid by taping crisscross patterns across containers, vases and bowls so that the flowers stand upright and stay in place. The floral manager will design a centerpiece, for example, and you will duplicate the completed arrangement as many times as needed for the event or front cooler. You will also help customers either on the phone or in the shop choose flowers for day of arrangements, making sure to consider the occasion and the customer's taste and budget. You will also assist with tasks, such as taking orders, making follow-up calls, arranging deliveries and helping type proposals.
Cleaning and Performing Administrative Tasks
Floral design work areas get messy quickly. An assistant sweeps up the thorns, branches, leaves and other debris that fall to the floor. You are also responsible for keeping worktables clean and organizing supplies such as ribbons, tissue paper, tape, scissors, message cards and pens. Also, supplies such as knives, scissors and clippers need washing.
Setting Up an Event
The day of an event, the assistant helps carry the arrangements to the vehicle and pack them securely. The assistant helps unload the vehicle and set up the event. These days are fast paced and full of action. It can be hard work sometimes; however being a pert of a team that takes a blank space and turns into a beautiful event is a rewarding experience.
