If you know folks that can attend, there is a meeting tomorrow, 4/19 on this proposal.

I believe, but can't confirm, this proposal is related to the new "Oak Beach" Development proposed for Lake Powell. See their Media Kit Here: http://oakbeachresortandspa.com/Oak-Beach-General-Media-Kit.pdf

Besides setting up a hotel on/near the lake, and 72 more homesites (which is concerning because Lake Powell already undergoes mechanical opening and closing frequently due to Wild Heron development being "too close to water" and "flooding problems"), they are proposing a COMMERCIAL MARINA on the dang lake itself. They also propose to "water taxi" folks from their hotel/houses across the lake and inlet to the beach. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.

From the media kit:

"The supreme access to Lake Powell welcomes residents to bask in activities by using gas powered boats and jet skis on the lake, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, or even simply enjoying the extensive marina area Private resort watercraft transportation to The Gulf of Mexico beach, only minutes away. Residents shall also enjoy over two acres of Gulf-front deeded beach property, allowing the utmost of privacy and stunning views of the Gulf of Mexico. Such a distinct combination of amenities for a luxury residential community is virtually unheard of on the Emerald Coast."

(Not sure where that "gulf front deeded property" is, but whatever...)

At any rate, I understand development will continue. Nothing we can do about that. But a marina on this lake would be a travesty. There's already too many gas powered boats on the lake as is. But the area near the inlet is where paddle boarders and kayakers enjoy access to the beauty of Camp Helen and the beach.

On that note, The Lake Powell Community Alliance informed us of the meeting tomorrow and asked us to encourage anyone who can attend to be at the meeting below to show our support for not allowing commercial operations on Lake Powell.

April 19th - REGULAR MEETING

BAY COUNTY PLANNING COMMISSION 1:30 PM – BAY COUNTY GOVERNMENT CENTER 840 WEST 11TH STREET, ROOM 1030 PANAMA CITY, FLORIDA

1. Call to Order and Roll Call
2. Approval of Minutes (March 15, 2018)
3. Announcements
4. Agenda – Additions, Deletions, Changes and Acceptance
5. Public Hearings (Swear in for quasi-judicial)

1. The Commission to conduct a quasi-judicial public hearing (PZ18-059) to consider a request to construct a commercial marina consisting of a 560-foot dock with six boat slips extending onto Lake Powell and an on-shore facility housing restrooms, marine storage facilities, and parking lot. Requires a Conditional Use Permit. The proposal is located on the north side of Panama City Beach Parkway (at 23402 Panama City Beach Parkway), approximately 2,100 east of Inlet Beach. (District V)

This issue is VERY IMPORTANT, and everyone should strongly consider contacting the Bay County Planning Commission at planning@baycountyfl.gov and voice your opinion on a Proposal for Lake Powell Commercial Marina.

As the Lake Powell Community Alliance has noted, the establishment of a commercial enterprise on this beautiful lake sets a potentially bad precedent, not to mention the fact that there is already too much motor-operated watercraft on the lake who already do NOT pay attention to NO WAKE zones throughout the lake (and which are mainly unenforceable due to limited resources by the enforcement authorities). The wakes, besides being tough on swimmers, paddle boarders, kayakers, etc., CONTRIBUTE to the erosion of the fragile coastline of this outstanding lake, which provides a vibrant habitat for marine life. Additionally, Lake Powell is designated as an “Outstanding Florida Water (OFW)” - worthy of special protection because of its natural attributes. This special designation is applied to certain waters and is intended to protect existing good water quality. The addition of commercial activity would jeopardize this
coveted designation.

Anyone that can help by attending this meeting, please do.

Ah....interesting. Thank you for that.

So.....still important to voice opposition to this. We surely don't want this precedent set and then end up with two marinas on Lake Powell!
