45,000+ Walton County voters are never going to agree 100% on anything and every issue that comes before the County Commission has well-meaning individuals on both sides. But every well-meaning citizen wants one thing from their county government and that is fairness. Fundamental fairness starts for any organization with how you treat your employees. Walton County employees deserve to be treated fairly regarding their employment. As citizens and voters, we ultimately are the employers of those individuals and thus it is our responsibility to ensure that they are treated fairly and dealt with honestly. Most organizations allow employees to have representation in job actions and Florida law requires representation be allowed for law enforcement officers if they choose. It should shame us all that our Walton County employees do not enjoy such basic rights and that employees can be subject to questioning with no representation and no audio or video recording allowed.
This travesty must end. At the next BCC meeting the Board will discuss changes to the employee policy that will right this wrong. We owe our employees to be afforded these basic rights and to be treated fairly and impartially. I encourage every Walton County voter to exercise your rights and fulfill your responsibilities as the ultimate employer of our public employees and direct your commissioners to vote in favor of these common sense changes.
