Music in Pictures
Walton County students are invited to explore classicial music and art...

“Music in Pictures” is an educational art project and juried art competition presented by the Rosemary Beach Foundation. “Music in Pictures” is open to all students in grade K-12 in the Walton County school system--both public and private.

The program begins in September 2011. Educators will receive CDs of symphonic music selected by members of the Florida State University music faculty and Sinfonia Gulf Coast. Students will first learn about the composer, listen to the music and then create a picture of their interpretation of the musical selection while the music is being played.

Our goals are:
  • To provide an opportunity for listening to and visually interpreting classical music
  • To encourage a lifelong appreciation of symphonic music by young people
  • To enhance learning that occurs in the classroom
“Arts education gives students a tangible way to experience the purpose of all learning: not simply to receive and store information and skills, but to be enabled to synthesize those gifts in a new and creative way that continues the process of cultural growth”, Dr. Benjamin Sung, Assistant Professor of Violin, Florida State University.

The art will be submitted to Rosemary Beach Foundation in late November 2011. A panel of judges will select finalists based upon the interpretation of the music. Winners will be announced in January 2012 and their art will be displayed in Rosemary Beach in February 2012. Five finalists will be awarded a cash prize at the “Classical Connections” (a partnership with Sinfonia Gulf Coast) at the February 17 & 18, 2012, performance by Amernet String Quartet, in the Rosemary Beach Town Hall.

“Listening to all kinds of music is an essential part of the art program at Butler Elementary. Music inspires, opens doorways for imagination, soothes the soul, and makes you want to sing and dance. All of those things occur regularly in the art room. Music, like the visual arts is a universal language",
Constance Rogers, Art Specialist, Van R. Butler Elementary, said.

Isn't it a fantastic opportunity for kids?
It really is! Plus it encompasses two of my personal passions - classical music and art... and I've always been fascinated by the idea of what inspires an artist to create. So many wonderful works of art have been inspired by great music, and there are even several pieces of music that were inspired by art. I am really looking forward to being a part of the project, and seeing what all of these talented young artists will create.
