NEXT EXIT HISTORY GPS in Walton County

Walton County historic locations off Interstate 10 will be noted during a “Next Exit History” program on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010 at 2 p.m. hosted by the Walton County Heritage Museum (WCHM) and Association (WCHA). University of West Florida history professors Dr. Jay Clune and Dr. Patrick Moore of Pensacola will present PowerPoint and project.

The event will be held at the Walton County Heritage Museum at 1140 Circle Drive, DeFuniak Springs.

Jennifer Adkins, also UWF faculty, said this project “gathers site-specific, scholarly content on historic communities and delivers it to GPS and non-GPS aware devices. Participants will be shown how to download.” For Next Exit History projects to date see http://nextexithistory.org/. Public comment is welcome and citizens are encouraged to share historic site information. Admission is free.

Dr. Clune is UWF History Department Chair and recently published “Historic Pensacola” commemorating Pensacola’s 450th celebration. Dr. Powell is the UWF Public History Program Director and just one of his specialties is heritage tourism.

The WCHM is located at 1140 Circle Drive, DeFuniak Springs, Florida. Call museum at 850-951-2127 for more information.

Dr. Clune is also a "SoWal" fan and recently purchased a home in South Walton. Dr. Patrick Moore is the UWF Public History Director and heritage tourism expert (typo on his name in second mention in press release -- oops.) Dr. Moore is also very familiar with South Walton. Seaside is often a topic in his Urban History classes.
