POSITION DESCRIPTION: Deer Lake State Park is currently seeking to hire OPS land management technicians (Woodsmen) to work as part of a coastal dune lake wetland restoration team. This project is a joint partnership between the Florida Park Service and Atlanta Botanical Gardens. Work will include hand and mechanical removal of overgrown woody species (such as titi), prescribed burning, fire line maintenance, road maintenance, equipment maintenance, and other project-related resource management activities.
Although experience in prescribed burning is preferred, it is not necessary, however the ability to complete and pass basic fire management training (S130/S190) is a requirement. Applicant should be interested in resource management issues and a career or further education in the biological sciences. Almost all work time will be spent outdoors in a variety of conditions.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR THE POSITION:
· Ability to work in extreme environmental and physically demanding conditions with many hazards including heat, humidity, standing water, venomous snakes, stinging insects, and dense vegetation.
· Ability to work well in a team environment with varied partners, where each member contributes greatly to the total effort.
· Willingness to learn and receive training from partners and project coordinator to conduct tasks in the safest and most efficient way.
· Educational background in environmental and/or biological sciences or a high school degree.
· Experience operating various types of equipment (such as 4X4 pickups, trailers, ATVs, chainsaws and other power and hand tools, etc.).
· Maintain a valid driver’s license.
· Ability to follow instruction and accept corrective criticism.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES FOR THE POSITION:
· Knowledge of Southeastern U.S. wetland plant species.
· Basic fire management training (S130/S190).
· Experience in operating heavy equipment such as farm tractors. Operating a manual transmission vehicle.
· 1 year of related experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Successful completion of annual moderate pack test. The pack test requires applicant to complete a two mile walk while carrying 25 lbs. in less than 30 minutes. If the applicant does not have a current moderate or arduous test at the time of hire, they will be given 30 days in which to complete it after being hired.
